Sleuth 101: Performance Enhancing Death

Sunday, 4 April 2010

Dan Kinsman (Blair McDonough) has been thrown a

lifeline by his new footy club. He has been passing all

his drug tests and seems to be on a winning path again.

But during a training session he gets electrocuted on

the treadmill. Is detective Colin Lane fit enough to solve

this shocking murder?

The club room is crawling with suspects. Was his

teammate Cary (Nick Russell) ready to rub Dan out?

Maybe it was Cary’s impressionable girlfriend Rebecca

(Emily Taheny) wanting to teach Dan a lesson. Perhaps his ambitious manager Robbie (Alan

Brough) felt his time with Dan was over and that murder was his only way out. Or maybe his

caring coach Mick (Francis Greenslade) wasn’t so caring after all.

Cuckoo

Sunday, 4 April 2010

Monstrous murderer or merely misunderstood? Filmed

over two years, this program seeks to unravel the

secret and seemingly scandalous world of this

infamous bird.

This is one of those rare occasions where reality is

more amazing than folklore. The cuckoo has intrigued

and inspired people for thousands of years, with Greek

philosophers, poets and Shakespeare writing about

these birds and their dubious reputation. But what

separates the facts from the fiction?

Every April the cuckoo comes to Europe from Africa, with its arrival once celebrated in pagan

festivals. However, far removed from the seemingly idyllic ‘herald of spring’ image is the

cuckoo’s reputation regarding its unusual breeding tactics – it lays its eggs in another species’

nest, it murders the host’s chicks and it doesn’t even look after its own young. It is this

uniquely menacing approach to parenting that gives the cuckoo its notoriety.

The cuckoo has been known to parasitize more than 50 different species in Britain alone,

including reed warblers, dunnocks or meadow pipits. Each cuckoo specialises in matching its

eggs perfectly to those of a certain species, so that its eggs can remain in the host’s nest

undetected. But why is the subsequent chick tolerated, fed and raised in the nest, even when

the chick itself is several times larger than the host? This film unravels one of nature’s most

extraordinary stories.

Little Devil

Sunday, 4 April 2010

Oliver Crowe’s (Joseph Friend) parents Laura (Maggie

O’Neill) and Will (Robson Green) have been married for

20 years. They communicate fantastically, as they

argue all the time. But Laura is wondering if this is all

there is.

Will on the other hand, is absolutely devoted. His best

friend, Adrian, (James Wilby) is feckless, charming,

materialistic and successful and, in Laura’s frustrated

condition, irresistible.

When Will is confronted with news of the affair, sparks fly. A trial separation follows and

Oliver decides it’s up to him to get his parents back together. He thinks that if he is very, very

good, they will realise it is him who is causing them trouble, not their relationship, and get

back together.

But their on-again and off-again feelings confuse him.

It seems that it’s only when he’s really sick or really horrid, that his parents unite as a team. So

the worse he behaves, the more likely they will come together.

Compass: Private Life Of An Easter Masterpiece: The Taking Of Christ

Sunday, 4 April 2010

In 1993 the National Gallery of Ireland made a stunning

announcement: a lost painting by Caravaggio had been

discovered in Dublin. Compass: Private Life Of An

Easter Masterpiece: The Taking of Christ, tells the

story of this lost treasure.

The Taking of Christ, which represents Jesus Christ

being captured in the Garden of Gethsemane, was

well-known from copies. But the original had been lost

for over 200 years. Then in 1990 the Jesuit fathers at St

Ignatius, Dublin, called on the National Gallery to clean a painting that had been hanging in

their residence for nearly 60 years. The restorer immediately recognised the composition, but

what convinced the experts that this painting wasn’t just another copy? How had it got to

Ireland? And what happened over the years to cause its disappearance? This fascinating

program takes a closer look at the painting itself, reveals the details that identify the painting

as a Caravaggio and unearths how and why the painting remained undiscovered for so long.

three beautiful, strong-willed teenage sisters Rebecca

(Melissa Howard), Sophie (Poppy Lee Friar) and Hazel

Ainsworth (Alexandra Coppinger) who just happen to

be ghosts!

When the three sisters died in a tragic coach accident

in 1861, alongside their beloved nanny Mildred, they

Taking matters into her own hands, Rebecca makes an application to the Ghost Council, the

high court of the afterlife, requesting them to return her and her sisters back to the world of

the living. But the afterlife is much like real life, bureaucracy is slow and forms get lost or

misfiled. For the sisters, the wait was 150 years, stuck in limbo.

Upon their return to the estate, the girls quickly realise their home has been turned into a

school. They now find themselves in a world unbeknown to them, and under the watchful eye

of their colourful, ghostly guardian – Agatha (Julie Eckersley). The sisters can stay under one

circumstance – no one is to find out their secret otherwise they will be sent back to the

afterlife.

Talking Heads: Victor Bray

Monday, 5 April 2010

This week on Talking Heads, Peter Thompson’s guest is

an Australian legend. On the one hand, Victor Bray’s

gourmet tomatoes have been praised by Stephanie

Alexander and food writers, and on the other hand he’s

much loved by folk who like their cars to go 400

kilometres an hour.

“A family sedan might have 150 to 200 horsepower,

we've got three and a half thousand!”

Over 30 years this humble Queensland tomato farmer has built an international reputation in

drag racing. He has won the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship on six occasions and

previously set a world speed record in drag racing. Bray is so legendary that after he ran over a

fan with his insanely powerful beast, his victim just wanted to shake his hand.

“I went over the barriers and hit a few people… and one guy didn't get up. As I reached down

he sort of opened his eyes and started to come to. He looked at me and goes, ‘Victor Bray! I've

always wanted to meet you!’”

The whole Bray family is involved in the sport. Bray’s son, Ben, holds the record as the

youngest person in the world to win a professional drag event, and has three Australian drag

racing championships under his belt.

All this is a long way from the illegal street racing and secret nitro boosters that used to fuel

Bray’s weekends!

“I made them believe one thing when another was true, and then go and take them out of the

game…”

Britain From Above: 24 Hour Britain

Tuesday, 6 April 2010 New Series

Acclaimed journalist Andrew Marr goes on an epic

journey through one day in the life of Britain, as seen

from the skies. From helicopters, planes, hang gliders

and satellites he gives the big picture of a nation that is

constantly on the move.

Britain’s beautiful, often mysterious and endlessly

varied landscapes are seen from above. The camera

swoops over the towns and cities showing familiar and

less familiar buildings from a new angle. We meet the

people whose work takes them high above the cities and towns to monitor and manage the

many visible and invisible networks that keep everyone working, warm, fed and watered.

Episode One reveals the transformation of Britain’s most important city: her capital, London.

It is the story of a capital that has been transformed from a low-rise, smog-ridden industrial

city into an upwardly mobile, rapidly changing hub of leisure, retail and finance.

QI

Tuesday, 6 April 2010

Hosted by Stephen Fry, QI is the world’s most

impossible quiz. This week’s guests are Alan Davies,

Phill Jupitus, Sean Lock and Liza Tarbuck.

On the face of it, QI (short for Quite Interesting) is a TV

comedy panel game like any other. It has a chairman

(Stephen Fry) and four contestants, who are asked

questions and get points for their answers. But there

the resemblance ends.

The questions on QI are so difficult that the panellists almost never get one right. So the

chairman only gives points for interesting answers, regardless of whether they are correct, or

even relevant.

In theory, it is quite possible for the most ignorant person in the room to win the game. In

practice, this rarely happens. This is because the game is booby-trapped to the disastrous

disadvantage of people who believe everything they are told.

The chairman awards heavy penalties for wrong answers which are also ‘obvious’ – clichés,

misconceptions and ‘common wisdom’ – much of which is taught every day in school but is in

fact completely untrue.

The subject matter of QI is unique because it takes as its canvas not familiar material like the

news, sport, television and pop music but the entire universe.

QI’s Supreme Fiendish Question Master, Stephen Fry, wields autocratic power over the scores.

Stephen’s task is to gently encourage his guests to search for answers, avoid urban myths, and

reach deep into their comedic pockets to entertain us.

Permanently installed guest Alan Davies develops the intellectual counterpoint and, as

Stephen puts it, “rushes headlong like a puppy into the wall of ignorance.” Alan highlights,

with his inimitable comedy style, that there are no stupid questions. Only funny ones.

Poh's Kitchen

Wednesday, 7 April 2010

This week Poh’s Kitchen is all about losing yourself in

the rich and exotic spice combinations of Northern

India and the ancient korma recipes originally brought

to India by the Persian Mughals.

Poh has met trail-blazing Indian chef Ragini Dey at a

restaurant awards night where Ragini’s restaurant won

a national award for Best Indian Restaurant. And

naturally Poh has to invite Ragini back to her kitchen so

she can learn a few secrets of Indian cooking.

Before Ragini comes to Poh’s Kitchen, Poh goes to Ragini’s restaurant to have a look behind

the scenes.

Back in the kitchen, Poh prepares a Chicken and Pistachio Korma while Ragini makes Lamb,

Chickpea and Plum Korma. These two very different kormas share rich spice combinations

that fill the kitchen with the aromas of India dating back to 14th century. What Poh loves is

how easy both recipes are to make even though the list of spices had made it look difficult.

Once all the spices are simply roasted together the rest is easy!

Poh discovers that some of the best lentils in the world are grown right here in Australia. So,

they also make Lentil Parathas to accompany the kormas, along with a really surprising dish –

Tandoori Broccoli stuffed with homemade paneer cheese, nuts, fruit and yoghurt and usually

cooked in a tandoor oven.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, April 08 at 6:00pm

Grand Designs Revisited: Lambourn

Thursday, 8 April 2010 New Series

Kevin McCloud returns to the Lambourn Valley to catch

up with a couple who took three years to finish

building their home on the Berkshire Downs, and two

years recovering from the experience.

In May 2003, Kevin met Rupert and Julie Upton when

construction was about to begin on their highly-

individual, cross-shape house. Rupert and Julie put

everything they had into this experimental and

expensive design.

Without a fixed price, Rupert and Julie’s budget soon blew out, forcing them to make some

compromises to the green oak frame construction.

As September rolled around the 750 pieces of wood that make up the frame are built in just

seven days!

Just as the build was making progress and the autumn weather looming, a national fuel crisis

hit, delaying the construction by three weeks.

Two and a half years later Kevin returns to see how Rupert and Julie are getting along in their

new home.

Thursday, 8 April 2010 Final

In five episodes this fascinating series traces the routes

of the epic journeys our ancestors made to conquer

the globe. Using the latest genetic and archaeological

evidence this series follows in the footsteps of our

ancestors to find out.

The final episode considers just how early modern

humans came to conquer the Americas, and the

perilous route they may have taken to reach this vast

land mass, cut off as it is by mountains of ice to the

North and oceans to the South.

It investigates the various routes these intrepid travellers may have taken and finds convincing

genetic evidence to suggest that their route from North to South may have followed the

Stress: Portrait Of A Killer

Thursday, 8 April 2010

Stress-related diseases are some of the biggest killers

in modern developed society, yet we know little about

their root cause. That all changes in this

unprecedented look at the revelatory science, based

on the latest research by pioneering scientists including

neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky, a professor at Stanford

University. For over a quarter of a century he has been

fascinated by why some people are crushed by stress

while others seem to thrive on it.

Sapolsky divides his time between his brain laboratory at Stanford and his fieldwork in the

Serengeti plains of East Africa. It turns out baboons provide an astonishingly close model to

humans - at least where stress is concerned. Like us, they only spend a few hours a day

satisfying their primary need - food - which leaves them at least three times that amount of

time to get on each other's nerves…again, just like us.

Sapolsky acts as a scientific detective, piecing together a fascinating case on how stress works

its deadly magic: first, how stress attacks cells, then how each individual reacts, and finally

how society impacts on stress.

Through his work and the work of several other pioneering scientists, including Michael

Marmot and Elizabeth Blackburn, we start to make the connection between stress and our

reaction to it, with amazing implications for how we choose to lead our lives.

This week on Can We Help? the team answer a call for

help from Peter Reid. His father Brian, at 79 years old,

is suffering from dementia, but while his memory is

fading fast he still has vivid memories of his childhood

on Rottnest Island, near Perth. Can We Help? arranges

a special meeting for Brian with the Rottnest Island

Heritage Group where he shares memories of his

childhood for inclusion within the oral history program.

Then Brian and his family are off for a return trip to

Rottnest and the chance to re-live those precious

memories.

Josh Byrne looks at how we can reduce waste in the home. Most of us have taken to the idea

of recycling - happily separating our paper, plastic, glass and cans, but there’s more we can do

to reduce our carbon footprint.

Then Kate Burridge is on hand to solve those niggling questions about language, as she

explains the origin of the phrases ‘mad as a cut snake’ and ‘silly as a tin of worms’.

And finally, Pete Rowsthorn stops in at Melbourne Zoo and finds out firsthand what it takes to

Place Of Execution

Friday, 9 April 2010 Final

Based on the novel by award-winning author Val

McDermid, Place Of Execution is a taut psychological

thriller that explores, exposes and explodes the

borderline between reality and illusion in a multi-

layered narrative that turns expectations on their

heads.

On a freezing December night in 1963, the worst kind

of fear strikes the secluded Derbyshire hamlet of

Scardale. Thirteen-year-old Alison Carter has vanished

without a trace. Against all their instincts, the self sufficient villagers are reluctantly forced to

ask the outside world for help.

For newly-promoted Detective Inspector George Bennett, it’s the first chance to show his

bosses what he’s made of. But in spite of his dogged efforts, her disappearance remains a

mystery until he uncovers a piece of evidence that turns the investigation on its head and

leads him to the gruesome answer and the apparently incontrovertible evidence of Alison’s

violent death.

Starring Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply and Bend it like Beckham), Lee Ingleby (The

Last Legion) and Greg Wise (Cranford)

In the final episode, Alison’s body has not been found but Hawkin is convicted of her rape and

murder and is hanged. He goes to the gallows claiming he’s a victim of other people’s lies.

While in the present day, Catherine is still convinced DI George Bennett wouldn’t fabricate

evidence, but she’s fired as her boss Keith vows to use her film to expose the famous

detective. Desperate to put an end to the secrets in Scardale, Catherine returns to the village

one more time. But what she uncovers there not only turns the Alison Carter case upside

Doc Martin: On The Edge: Part 1

Saturday, 10 April 2010 Repeat

The tactless and curmudgeonly Dr Martin Ellingham

continues to cause unrest among the villagers of the

pretty Cornwall village of Portwenn in the repeat of

this two-part special.

The doc is taken hostage by a madman with a gun,

attacked with an ice cream cone and pelted by fresh

baked Cornish pasties.

The peace of the village is shattered by an invasion of

tourists, eager for a sighting of a rare bird discovered nesting on Doc Martin's Aunt Joan's

land. Village plumber Bert Large tips off the local baker, who seizes the chance to revive his

ailing business by making it a new attraction.

Meanwhile, Doc Martin tries to head off a food contamination scare, continues to fumble his

attempts at romancing the lovely schoolmistress Louisa, and looks like losing his eccentric

receptionist, Pauline.

Wickham), aware of the pressure Janine is under

juggling the role of DCI with that of a single parent,

encourages Janine to apply for promotion to DCS. It’s

give up the job and team she loves in order to spend

more time at home?

was seen near the site of Wilson’s murder.

Richard covers for Shap as long as he can and in a devastating twist, Shap finally admits that

Camerton is his half-brother and he thinks he knows the truth behind Camerton’s attack on

Sally and who killed Wilson and Tanya. The question is: can they convince Janine and can they

find enough evidence to bring in their suspected murderer? As the team finally gets to the

terrible truth, Janine must decide what to do next: does she go for the promotion or stay with

her team?

Art Nation

This week on Art Nation, Fenella Kernebone heads to Bendigo in Victoria to look at the

Australian Ballet’s Out There program which aims to introduce ballet to school kids around

Australia. Many primary school children in regional Australia have little or no exposure to the

art form and one of the Australian Ballet’s aims is to find new audiences for ballet.

Singer Henry Wagons, himself a lifelong fan of Queen, visits the Art Gallery of Ballarat to

review Queen – the Unseen Archive. Previously hosted by Proud Gallery in London, the

exhibition will feature an intimate photographic portrait of the legendary rock band Queen by

Peter Hince. This event expands on the London exhibition and will be the first time these

images have been brought together with Queen memorabilia.

Queen’s statements of pomp and grandeur continued throughout their career and it is

regarded as one of rock n roll’s most popular bands of all time. The extrovert leading the

charge was the awe-inspiring performer Freddie Mercury. His overt showmanship has

resonated with Wagons and many others and Mercury and his band continue to have a lasting

influence on popular music to this day.

Green may be the new black but just how environmentally friendly is Australian architecture?

Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) has developed a simple, cost effective, easily

constructed skin for the University of Technology Broadway Tower in Sydney that promises to

transform an icon into a sustainable and stunning building.

To close the program, songwriter and lead singer of iconic Australian band Men At Work -

Colin Hay, returns to Australia to perform in the Art Nation studio.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, April 04 at 7:00pm

First Tuesday Book Club With Jennifer Byrne

First Tuesday Book Club enters its 5th year with host Jennifer Byrne, and panellists Marieke

Hardy and Jason Steger exploring the world of books; from prize-winners to blockbusters, hot

off the press new releases to much loved classics.

This month the book club comes to us from the Adelaide Festival. The first special guest on

the panel is Markus Zusak, who is author of five novels, including The Messenger, and the

internationally bestselling The Book Thief, which by last count has been translated into over 30

languages.

The second guest is no stranger to our Book Club as her most recent book The Little Stranger

was discussed on the club late last year. Sarah Waters is also the author of the award winning

trilogy of sexy Victorian novels Tipping the Velvet, Affinity and Fingersmith.

The books discussed on this month’s club are:

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Originally published as a 'shilling shocker', Robert Louis Stevenson's dark psychological fantasy

became an immediate bestseller in the UK and America, giving us the idea of a split

personality and winning accolades from the academic community along the way.

Solar by Ian McEwan.

The latest novel from Ian McEwan, Solar is a dark satirical novel focusing on climate change

and one man's ambitions and self-deceptions.

First Tuesday Book Club With Jennifer Byrne will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, April 11 at

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the best and brightest minds in

Australia, combining creativity and skill to craft the inventions we all wish we’d thought of.

Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: engineer James Bradfield Moody, inventor and

designer Sally Dominguez, and futurist and author Mark Pesce. Inventions featured on the

program:

GREEN POD – by inventors Mark Rossiter and Tim Ceolin from QLD

There are lots of great reasons to commute to work by bicycle. It's great exercise, wonderful for

the environment, you can save heaps of money, and even avoid traffic jams so you can actually get

to work on time! Yet bicycles are not commonly used for day to day transport in Australia. One of

the many excuses used to avoid ditching the car for a bicycle is that most workplaces don’t have

appropriate facilities for people to shower on arrival. The employers say they can’t afford to build

new bathrooms and bike racks. And it isn't a good look showing up for work red-faced and covered

in sweat. Mark Rossiter, just 25 years old, was studying in France when he caught the cycling bug.

When he returned to Australia he began to think about all the obstacles that have prevented

cycling from becoming as mainstream in Australia, and with the help of his architect friend Tim

Ceolin, 24, they set about removing some of these barriers.

The Green Pod is a self-contained module that allows bicycle riders to shower and change at work.

All the plumbing and electrical elements are built in and ready to go, while the different

configurations allow up to two showers, two change rooms and 28 lockers, all in the size of a car

parking space. The unit is architecturally designed to maximise the use of space. If it is installed

outdoors it can even incorporate solar panels for power. The Pod utilises an innovative self

cleaning system which ensures users enjoy a high standard of sanitation without the cost of daily

cleaning.

SILK CANVAS – by inventors Evette Morgan and Diane Giusa from NSW

Painting on silk requires normal paints to be mixed with a special fabric medium before being

applied to the silk. Otherwise the colours will bleed into each other. Primers that are used to

prepare a canvas are all specific to one medium. With the Silk Canvas you can apply any

combination of paint mediums, be it oils, acrylics, watercolours, dyes and even ink, and they won’t

bleed. The invention is a layered material that is acid free, providing long durability for an artwork,

whilst adding volume and brightness.

D DRIVE – by inventor Stephen Durnin from QLD

All engines have an optimum speed at which they are most efficient. Conventional and automatic

transmissions don’t allow car and truck engines to operate at their peak efficiency. Every time you

change gears you are wasting fuel. D Drive is an infinitely variable geared transmission, which

allows an engine to operate at its most efficient setting whilst enabling the vehicle speed to be

continuously varied to suit driving conditions.

Catalyst

LIDAR

Most of the world’s climate scientists are studying changes close to earth in the troposphere

or a little further out in the stratosphere, but researchers in Antarctica have been looking

more than 50 kilometres above the earth’s surface, where the Southern Lights, or Southern

Aurora, phenomenon occurs. The researchers have been observing how, paradoxically, as

greenhouse emissions heat the lower atmosphere they cause the upper atmosphere to cool.

Mark Horstman visits a small hut on the edge of Antarctica to take a look at the light detection

and ranging equipment, LIDAR, that is collecting crucial climate change data and building a

stunning picture of the mysterious noctilucent clouds in the mesosphere.

Stem Cell Ethics

Using human embryos for stem cell research has long been a controversial issue but a recent

breakthrough has put a new complexion on the debate. Since a Japanese scientist first

developed a new kind of cell, IPS or Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, it has been speculated

that the need to use human embryos for stem cell therapies might be eliminated.

Researchers believe there is much to be gained from using the thousands of surplus IVF

embryos sitting in storage across Australia. While it is legal to use these leftover embryos for

research purposes, does using them reduce human life to a commodity?

Dr Maryanne Demasi explores whether the new discoveries could end the debate for good.

Follow the Leader

Is it best to be an individual and act on your own or is it better to follow the pack? It’s a

question for all social animals from sheep to horses, fish to birds – even for humans - and it’s a

question of survival. But, just how do large assemblies of animals manage to make efficient

decisions?

Ruben Meerman takes a look at some Sydney University research that’s seeing what tiny

mosquito fish can teach us about the bigger picture of making group decisions.

Fundamentals with Bernie Hobbs – Precious Metals

What puts the precious into precious metals? Bernie Hobbs shines her ‘Fundamental’ spotlight

on the treasures of the periodic table to find out why the glitter of gold is so preciously

proverbial.
