STCGL “SCOTTIE ROUNDUP” – April 15, 2006

Yee haw… the Scottie Roundup was a rootin’ tootin’ shootin’ terrific time! Held amongst the lush trees and

gardens of Dan & Maxine Stickler’s backyard Kentucky “ranch”, the day held exciting events for all… show

folks, pet folks, and of course, those raucous rascals themselves… our Scots.

First thing that warm Saturday morning, Mitzi Sizemore judged the conformation Fun Match. She had

many lovely Scotties to go over, and she selected Rose & Jack Shacklett’s “Portia”, Glendarra’s Battle

Cry, as her Best In Match Puppy. This pup’s littermate “Dini”, Glendarra’s Warrior Prince, went Best Of

Opposite. Looks like this litter has a bright future ahead in the show ring.

There were quite a few entries in the adult match, but in the end, Marvin & Jackie Burton’s lovely

veteran girl “Bea”, Ch. Majac’s Illusion In B Sharpe, stole the show by going Best In Match Adult. Her

Best of Opposite was a nice boy, Cumbria’s Rio Bravo, owned by new club members, Don and Pat Brown.

Three club members dressed their Scots up for the costume contest… yep, we had an Easter bunny (and

matching Mom), a biker dude, and a surfer babe. (Where were the cowboys?!) Too cute! We also gave the

honor of the ring to three champions, and to several pets, for their own parade and presentation. Each

and every owner walked away with a ribbon or rosette, with wide smiles of joy and pride, and to much

appreciative applause.

And lunch… yummy! In keeping with our “western” theme, we had 3 kinds of barbeque… beef, pork and

chicken, with all the salad trimmings and several dessert choices, prepared by Club members. As we

enjoyed our meals, (and the air-conditioned living room of the Stickler’s), the Louisville Club held it’s

monthly meeting, chaired by Marvin Hanka, President.

The afternoon ended with the “running of the Scots” through an elaborate Lure Course set up and

managed by the Burton’s. No doubt, this event was truly for the total enjoyment of the dogs, as they

screamed for their turn, and ran their little die-hearts out. Yet another spectacular event and outing

for the members and fuzzy kidlets of the STCGL!

A note from the judge: What a privilege to go over so many dear Scotties at the STCGL Fun Match!

A heartfelt “thank you” to the Officers, Directors & members of the Louisville Club for giving me this

honor. I would like to dedicate my contribution to this wonderful day, and every day that I give to Scottish

Terriers in the future, to the memory and celebration of my forever dog, Bonnie. Fondly, Mitzi Sizemore

Bell, Julie Hill, Donna Cambron, Donna Wagner, Rose & Jack Shacklett, Rod Ott and Marcia Dawson.

Rod Ott’s new girl “Glory”, Bravo Morning Glory, won the very competitive Puppy Match held the night before

the National Specialty – terrific! The specials dog that Donna Cambron was showing made the first big cut at the

Specialty show. And, Julie Hill brought her old girl Nadine, who is now suffering from the disease CA, to the

show grounds so that everyone who was interested could watch her “move”… a great, though heart-wrenching,

education for all. Kudos to you, Julie!

Heartfelt condolences go out to Linda Tubbs Bell, her family, and community of Dyersburg, TN, after a devastating

tornado ripped apart homes with 23 lives lost… they all need our prayers and support! (And, please don’t forget to

give to your local Red Cross or Salvation Army for these and other tragedies within our own country.)

Our sympathy goes out to Ruth Devine on the passing of her beloved Dee Dee, and to the Herman’s on the loss of

their 2 Scots in this past year. We pray that time softens the edges of your pain & grief.

“This and That” by Ed Leab

Once again Dana and I chose to put ourselves through all the planning and worry that goes with it of “having a litter”. And once again we

marveled at the miracle of birth, gift of life, and the pain of losing a newborn puppy. It seems as though some things no matter how many

times you experience them never lose the ability to have a very strong stinging affect on you. The over powering sadness at the death of a 3 or

4 day old puppy or the peacefulness of sitting by a whelping box at 3 a.m. watching a new mother asleep while nursing her litter are among

opposing strong affect’s a breeder experiences. All the experiences a breeder has from the time of birth of a new litter, to the day a puppy

from that litter is placed in their new home collectively form a lifetime memory of experiences. Sure causes me to wonder about the WHY of

so many things.

For example one WHY is WHY breed dogs? I’ve read so many books, and articles on the topic I’ve concluded the more a person reads

about it, the less they know about it. My experience has been the more reading you do about breeding the more thinking you do about it the

more confused you become. One issue a breeder has among many, for example, is the selection of a particular bitch to breed to a particular

stud dog. Man – go down that road some time and find out where it takes you! My conclusion – as bad as I wish it were otherwise is that

there is no absolute correct answer when selecting a stud for a bitch. There are only breeder’s opinions, which they are normally pretty liberal

with. Opinions aside, the truth is breeding is the best guess a breeder can make for his/herself.

When it comes to breeding, I’ve learned Mother Nature is going to do what Mother Nature is going to do – and that is that regardless of

what a breeder has decided. Have you ever heard the cliché “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry”? I promise you that as old

and as overused as that clichés may be it is at play when breeding. So, when you have decided to breed this particular bitch or stud dog, the

best you can do is to take your absolute best informed and educated guess, guided by best breeding ethics and as much education as you can

get on the subject and then relax. I don’t know of a single breeder despite their best efforts who has not had problems at one time or the other

including myself and Dana. Like every breeder, we have lost newborn puppies, one new mother’s milk would not drop, and one new first

time mother we had absolutely rejected her litter on sight. That was a fun night. I could go on and on but I will not bore you with more horror

stories. I’m sure you’ve gotten the point. Dana always does the first week. She is stronger than I am!

Another WHY that I wonder about is WHY, at least it seems like it, WHY has the Scottie breeder world become so “negative” in the last

year or two? I’ve heard it said, “you should only believe half the rumors you hear”. I sincerely hope that is the case because if only half of

what I hear is true, things in the Scottie breeder world are plenty bad enough. I absolutely reject the old saying “we’ve gone to the dogs”. I

really believe if that were the case, the breeder world would be a lot more positive a place in so many ways. We humans are in charge and can

make it positive if we want to.

We make the Scottie breeder world, and our club, anything we want them to be. Hopefully we will make both a positive place and a place

we want anyone who owns a Scottie to be. A place that includes pet people, show people, and rescue people with equal respect for all. A

place that is inclusive of everyone who has an interest in the breed we say we care so much about. Get busy in the club; attend meetings; get

on a committee. Quoting Will Rogers “it costs the same money to say something good about someone; it all depends on how you want to

spend your money”. See you at the show. You’ll probably see me at the concession stand having a chilidog, with lots of onions. Join me why

don’cha? I’ve got lots of sea stories.

information on Club activities, meetings, Louisville Specialty ’06, & Scottie Roundup photos!
