Stop by the Library to celebrate your freedom to read next week. Take a look at our display of
books that have been challenged or banned around the country. Some very popular titles from
our library including The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins to Bone by Jeff Smith has made the
list this year. The American Library Association selects this week each year to point out how
important it is to have access to a wide variety of viewpoints, ideas, and ideologies to challenge
you in your reading. Books should not be removed from libraries or schools because of the ideas
presented in them. While parents have a responsibility to monitor and limit what their children
have access to, no one has the right to dictate what everyone in a public or school library may
read. I love the image at the left; it’s from a 2007 Banned Books Week poster and reminds me
that books are an integral part of our culture. Happy reading! Ms. Fisher
