A COMICAL LOOK AT HOW TO RUIN A SMALL GROUP
1. Do it all yourself.
a. Training others is hard work
b. They might try something new- unacceptable.
c. Asking others to help is intimidating, do it yourself.
d. Another suggestion: Do nothing at all.
1. Prepare at the last minute.
2. Read your lesson while combing your hair.
3. Do your discussion questions during worship.
2. Strive to be a Mini-church of your own.
a. You are the only one who understands God’s will for your group, right.
b. Make your members loyal to you only.
c. Plan so many small group events that members of your group can’t be involved in church-wide
events.
3. Have all the answers.
a. Show off your extensive knowledge of biblical, theological, historical and sports trivia.
b. If there is a question, answer it first because you are smarter than everyone else.
c. If you don’t know and answer to a question, just finesse it.
1. Insinuate it was dumb question.
2. Redirect the question so someone is embarrassed, not you.
4. Go easy on the encouragement.
a. Avoid encouragement at all costs.
b. Focus on yourself and your performance as a leader, forget everyone else.
c. Set up so many rules and expectations that no one could possibly deserve encouragement.
d. Take time to point out people’s faults and shortcomings while overlooking grace in their lives.
On a more serious not, you are not expected to replace the pastor; but you do represent him. Step up
and be the right kind of leader for your group. Be humble and allow the Holy Spirit to work in your life as
example to your group. Be honest and vulnerable about your sin, and be willing to take advice from the
pastor and group members. Continue to ask this question of your group, “How can I serve you better?”
