DIRECTIONS: Please have an adult help with the searches! Safety on the internet is important!
GOOGLE- Maple Valley, WA
Go to www.historylink.org and type in Maple Valley, Thumbnail History, or GOOGLE
“Maple Valley, Thumbnail History”. This has lots of cool information about how our
town was named, who named it, what it looked like and also who lived and worked here.
GOOGLE- The Maple Valley Historical Society, here you will read about Maple Valley and
also learn more about your town.
GOOGLE- Early Settler homesteads, to get an idea of what a house would look like
GOOGLE- Black Diamond Coal Mine- look at the pictures and read captions to help you
learn about coal mining.
GOOGLE- One room school house- look at what schools used to look like!
ASSIGNMENT- -Early Life in Maple Valley Booklet
Complete the Early Life in Maple Valley book, use lots of rich detail in your pictures!
All drawings should be your OWN work, colored nicely, and carefully. Computer
images are NOT allowed.
Skip page 9 and 10 until you complete your field experience.
FIELD EXPERIENCE-
While researching Maple Valley, you went to the Maple Valley Historical Societies website,
I would like you all to plan a trip to visit the Gibbons Store and the Old Firehouse. They are open
the first Saturday of every month! I would highly recommend calling 425-432-3470, before
planning your trip, to double check. That gives you two Saturdays to enjoy, this one coming up
October 1st and November 5th. You can look at their hours on the www.maplevalleyhistorical.com
website under “museums”. They are located by the community center. It is a fun hour or so, with
your kids! The people who run the store are full of interesting facts about Maple Valley.
Sometimes the Old Firehouse is even open too!
If you cannot make it… you can find pictures of what an old mercantile looked like in a
Google search, and you can always peek into the window at the Gibbons Store. Not as
much fun, but it will work!
Have fun!!
Warmly,
Mrs. Fitzpatrick
