American History Fellowship APPLICATION 2010-2011
Legacies of Liberty is a federally funded Teaching American History professional
learning program for teachers in Sacramento City Unified School District. 4th-, 5th-, and
8th-grade history teachers have priority but teachers in other grades can participate if there
are open slots. U.C. Davis scholars and other highly qualified history professionals will
provide training including Supper Seminars and History Labs, and facilitate collaboration
through one cycle of Lesson Study each academic year for up to five years. Each year,
Fellows who complete the school year training program are eligible to participate in that
summer’s all-expenses-paid field study program. For more information, contact Letty

JAN 19 Supper Seminar: Guest Historian: Expansion Escalates Tension
FEB 2 History Lab: Demonstration lesson, Lesson Study
MARCH 2 Supper Seminar: Guest Historian: The Bear Flag Republic in the Context of the Mexican-American
War
(FEBRUARY Lesson Study: Groups meet 2-3 times for lesson study, Groups observe & debrief on two ½-day
thru MAY) release days
MAY 18 History Lab: Demonstration lesson, Lessons Learned from Lesson Study, Preparation for Field Study
JUNE Travel to New Orleans for Field Study! Dates TBD but trip will be 4 days in the last wk. in June
AUGUST Travel to Denver for Field Study! Dates TBD but trip will be 3 days last wk. July, first wk. August
*These dates are subject to change pending district approval but all meetings will be on Wednesdays from 4:00-7:00 at the
Serna Center.
Requirements: (minimum 1-year commitment):
If accepted into the Legacies of Liberty (LoL) Fellowship program applicants agree to:
Provide completed Administrative Support Form which will be sent to you after you submit your application.
Attend and participate fully in ALL grant activities during the school year (see schedule above) to be eligible
for Summer Field Study
Complete all Legacies of Liberty Fellowship related assignments
Cooperate fully with the evaluation program
Applicant Placement:
Space in the program is limited. When selecting applicants to participate in the program the following will be taken in
to consideration: Balancing the number of applicants of grades 4, 5 & 8, recruitment of applicants from schools in two
or more years in PI status, recruitment of applicants most in need of History-specific professional learning and
commitment to the LoL program as demonstrated in the completed application. If necessary, a waiting list will be
created and some applicants may be asked to wait until the following year of the program to participate. Teachers in
grades other than 4, 5, and 8 will be admitted if space permits.
