Hey there friend, My name is Kristopher, and I am a proud member of the “Wealthy Affiliate” Internet Marketing University. This quick little FREE reference guide is for anyone who is struggling to learn a little more about the basic principles of Marketing, and more specifically, how to market products or services online. A Short Disclaimer: This guide doesn’t go into specific techniques, or tactics to use in actually performing campaigns and such. It is however, a very straight-forward guide to understanding the Marketing thought process that you should be performing before you begin building campaigns and promoting affiliate products/services. Some of this information is available within Wealthy Affiliate. Overview So, the title of this guide is “How to Sell ANYTHING to ANYONE Online.” In reality, these principles are seen in action every single day among major media all around us. Television, Newspaper, Magazine, Billboards, etc…
However, with all the hype around “techniques” or “secret methods” when it comes to Internet Marketing, people often get so wrapped up in the concept alone, they completely overlook the fact that it’s still just marketing!!
Now, I don’t have to tell any of the successful people this stuff, because they already get it…they realize that this game is nothing new. It’s just that the playing field is different! The same basic approach still applies. And if you too can “get it” you will have a lifetime of wealth at your fingertips. This is the truth!
So, just what does it take to market or promote products online? Well, before you ever even think about writing a single word in an article campaign, or ad copy in a AdWords campaign…you need…no, YOU MUST…

Now, this is stressed a lot already at Wealthy Affiliate University, but it seems that most tend to overlook this because their eyes are too glazed over by some magic keyword tool or a hot new Clickbank product promising a copy/paste methods to making thousands.
The truth is, you have to take the time to answer a few extremely important questions before you begin to promote anything online….
And those questions are:
WHAT? WHO? & WHY?
Now, I will dedicate a section in this guide to each one of these questions so you can fully see the power behind knowing the answer to each specifically.
But with a firm understanding of the answers to these questions, you are armed with knowledge 100 X’s more powerful than a keyword tool or some Guru’s guide… You will have written yourself a ticket to cashing in BIGTIME online!!

The “WHAT?”
Since most of us in the Online realm are Affiliate Marketers, the “What?” simply refers to your Affiliate offer. It is the product you are an affiliate for on Clickbank, or the Pay-Per-Lead offer you’re promoting on another CPA Network. Or it could even be your own product! Who knows…
But whatever it is, the first thing you want to answer is the “What?”
- What EXACTLY is your product/service? - What does it do? - What doesn’t it do? - What does it look/feel/smell/taste/seem like? - What are its FEATURES? - What are its BENEFITS? (yes, we all know there is a difference between the two) - Who made it? - Has it received any awards/accolades? - Who has used it and liked it? - What is the whole reason it exists?
If you can answer these questions, you now have a very strong understanding of your product. Since most of you

may not actually own the product you are promoting or have used the service you are offering, it is imperative that you spend the required time answering these questions.
It doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal…it can be as simple as taking out a piece of paper and a pen or even using your favorite text editor on the computer and jot these things down.
This will make it way easier to provide a quality testimonial to someone who possibly has never heard of this product/service before. If you have used the product/service, then this becomes way easier. But you should still write the answers to these questions down because you may uncover something you never thought of before
Note: Sometimes, the “WHO?” may actually come before the “WHAT?” if you choose / find an audience before the product. And that’s totally OKAY. In fact, it may even be more typical to have an audience in mind before you choose a product/service because you may be selecting a different product/service to promote to your email list or a pre-determined demographic that you like to target.

The “WHO?”
No, no not the epic rock band that formed in the 1960’s, but the “Who” refers to who in the heck would be interested in BUYING your product or service!
This part is probably the toughest step to grasp, because it’s not always cut and dry. Plus, a lot of the demographics can overlap, depending on your particular product/service. However, if you just think for a few minutes, you can easily come up with a general idea of what TYPE of person would be interested in what you have to offer.
- Are they male or female? (or can you market to both) - What is their general age bracket? - What is their Income level? (broke college kid, or wellto-do middle aged business men) - What is their ethnicity? - Are they aware of this product/service already? - Are they even capable of buying it? - When would they need this product or service?
Answers to these types of questions go a looong way in understanding the “type” of person you will have to convince to take your desired action.

Now, sometimes you may be unsure, and this is where a nifty little site that I found comes in quite handy. It’s a website called: Quantcast http://www.quantcast.com/
And you can actually take the website of the product or service you are promoting and enter its URL into the search box. Then this little baby will spit back to you a gold mine of info about a particular site’s visitors! Age brackets, income, gender, and even in some instances, other sites they visit off of this site!

As you can see in the example above, I entered “Yahoo.com” and it split back a ton of super-relevant data! Wow, this stuff is gold when trying to target an specific audience and finding out exactly “WHO?” our audience is or should be!!
NOTE: Some sites may not show up here if they are new, but the ones that do are generally detailed enough to gauge the basics. However, I do not suggest relying on this data as being 100% accurate, but rather a good estimate or a starting point in your “WHO?” research.

The “WHY?”
This is the point that is preached to the members of Wealthy Affiliate University over and over and over. You must understand the “WHY?” of marketing or you are just setting yourself up to look like a Salesperson.
And believe me, none of you want to be a Salesperson!! BuyBuyBuyBuyBuy…blahh! Nasty!!
Probably the most crucial point in your research will rest right here in this section because it is… THE WHOLE REASON ANYONE BUYS ANYTHING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD ANYWAY!!
No lie…Think about it. Why do you buy a Lexus instead of a Chevrolet? Because you want to look cool…Because you need to keep up with your yuppie neighbors that have one…Or because maybe it has more airbags to protect your family if you get in a crash…Or perhaps it gets great gas mileage (doubtful, but maybe, who knows)…Or maybe just because it’s luxurious.
These are all GREAT reasons “WHY” someone would buy a Lexus! You can’t just park a Lexus in someone’s driveway and say BUY IT Now! Which is essentially what most people do online. They slap a ‘Buy It’ button in front of a user and expect them to respond. Yuck!!

That is absurd! You need to answer this question before you go wasting time tossing up campaigns left and right. You need to know “WHY” someone would ever want something if you desire to have a chance in hell of getting them to pull out their credit card.
Let’s illustrate another example, just to drive this point home…
Say you are selling a new kind of runway-style Eye Liner used in major fashion shows around the world. Now, unless you’re selling to punk rock teen guys that listen to Fall Out Boy, you can pretty much concur that your “WHAT” is the eyeliner that goes on eyelids and the “WHO” is girls and young women ages 13-28 (roughly) that are very concerned about their appearance and have a desire to be like these models they see on the cover of Vogue (with a little splash of “WHY” already).
Now, “WHY” would one of these girls buy this eyeliner?? You may be saying, “crap dude, I don’t know!!” But just think! Think about any magazine you’ve ever seen in line at the supermarket…Those pictures tell a story! And they tell it pretty damn well! Couple that with the headlines they use (ad copy)…then BAM you have your “WHY?”

So “WHY?” would a girl buy this runway eyeliner?
- So they can make themselves look beautiful - To increase eye definition - Make their eye color stand out - To Accent eye lashes - So they can look better in photographs - So they can be like the runway models they look up to - To attract boys - Their friends are using it - Because the magazine says it’s cool (ha, sad but true)
THESE are the real things you need to be focusing on in your campaigns. Bring these points up to the forefront of your advertising and harp on them.
“Make YOUR POTENTIAL CUSTOMER aware that YOU are aware of THEIR needs!!”
You will be shocked in how far this little bit of knowledge will take you in your marketing efforts.

Finally, The “WHY NOT?”
Ahhh, you thought that was the end didn’t you…well I decided to sneak another section in on ya!! Winkwink
The “WHY NOT?” aspect of your initial research can be just as important as the “WHY?” research.
How come? Because think about it, how often do you turn somebody down when they try to sell you something? You will have every excuse in the book as to Why you can’t or don’t want to buy something. - It’s too expensive - It’s too ugly - It’s too long - It’s too short - It’s too this - It’s too that…etc.
If you can make a list of what you feel would be the most common points of rejection for your offers, and then think of responses to those rejections, you will become an INTERNET MARKETING MACHINE!! Because check it, if you can identify what problems or issues your potential customer will have with purchasing your product/service, you will be become that much closer to scoring that sale.

Imagine if you had a good…no, a GREAT reason that refutes their refusal? You will put their mind at ease, and that will make them feel good. Then they will be much more comfortable and willing to proceed with the sale because you calmed their fears. If you can eliminate their greatest concerns with purchasing the product or service, you will be 90% better than marketers that JUST list the benefits and a call to action, then cross their fingers and hope that the consumer will not care enough about their worries, and will whip out their credit card to make you a sale. Well, I got news for ya….
IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN THAT EASILY!!
Unless you have “Kern-like” sales copy, you are just playing darts with a blindfold. You’ll cut your affiliate commissions down to nill and waste a whole bunch of time and/or money.
And here’s a little hint…one of the biggest concerns about products/services in the Internet Marketing realm is the Cost…and when that’s not an issue (because you have some less-intelligent person who cares not about their own money and will gladly fork over their hardearned dough at the site of a pretty sales page), then it’s going to be the “Fear of a Scam.”
Eliminate their concerns BEFORE they even think of them and your bank account will LOVE YOU!!

Well there you have it…The four most important aspects to really getting inside your potential customer’s head so you can increase your chance of making that sale! I say “potential customer” because selling online is NOT a given like so many people would like you to believe. You have to EARN that sale in some form or another.
All the really successful people (I’m talking the milliondollar affiliates) know this, and THAT my friend is the biggest secret about Internet Marketing. Plain and simple.
