to encourage and empower students to achieve successful outcomes and to support and Hawthorne Public School
mentor her colleagues. She is extremely organized, very professional, generous with her
time, and an effective advocate dedicated to placing students and their needs at the centre
of her focus.
Sandra chaired the organizing committee which planned and hosted the Ontario Coopera-
tive Education Association’s Spring Conference in Ottawa in 2007. She worked tirelessly
with her team to provide an enriching professional development opportunity for over 600
delegates from across the province and handled the many challenges with grace, determi-
nation, and highly-developed inter-personal skills.
Recognizing the critical need to re-engage students who have dropped out of school, San-
dra took the initiative to investigate specialized co-op programs throughout the province.
She obtained funding and developed the model for Winning Attitudes, an at-risk student
specialized co-op program which includes an online component that allows the program
to run entirely off-site. Winning Attitudes, now in its third year, has become a successful
continuous-entry, full-day co-op program, aimed at 16 and 17-year-olds who are no longer
attending school, with the goal of transitioning them back into school and back on track to
secondary school graduation.
