                                                              Rabbi Jay M. Stein
There is a wonderful show on
                                                              television called Mythbusters.
The goal of the show is to
                                                              determine whether or not a
myth has any basis in reality, or it is just plain
foolishness. For religion the same question must
often be asked. What are the myths that have
no basis in reality and need to be cleansed, and
what are the true practices that elevate our
relationship with God, community and self. Into
the organized, halakhic religion has often crept
what is called in the codes as minhag shtus, silly
customs. Periodically, they are corrected and
sometimes they remain intact. Sometimes those
customs remain intact because we want to
believe so badly that they are true that we
refuse to entertain the possibility that they have
no real foundation. Sometimes we lack the
scholarship to determine the true origin of the
practice, and therefore, even though it may
seem outrageous, we cannot discontinue it. But
in some cases we need a correction. We need a
One of the great assets of our congregation is
our daily minyan. People travel from all over to
our synagogue because they know we will have a
minyan. Although we know a person can pray on
their own, kaddish can only be recited with a
minyan. But the question remains as to how
obligated do we feel to attend minyan, especially
if we are not reciting kaddish. Clearly,
individuals are not required to actively seek out a
