SPECIAL LEAVE POLICY
This policy is discretionary but will be applied by the College with fairness
and equity.
1 PERSONAL/COMPASSIONATE REASONS
The College usually grants staff paid leave, for example, in the event of
the death or serious illness of a close relative ie, Husband, Wife, Partner,
Mother, Father, Son or Daughter, Brother, Sister, Mother-in-Law, Father-
in-Law. Five days are normally granted. Consideration will be given for
additional leave from the employee’s annual leave entitlement.
2 MOVING HOUSE
One day’s paid leave is normally granted. Where the employee is moving
house as a result of being newly appointed by the College, 2 days paid
leave may be granted.
3 STUDY LEAVE AND EXAM LEAVE
Where staff development has been agreed by the College and identified at
appraisal, paid study leave may be authorised by the College. Any such
leave must be agreed in advance with the employee’s line manager and
confirmed in writing by Human Resources Dept. Additionally, paid exam
leave will normally be authorised up to a maximum of 5 days in any one
calendar year for the purpose of preparing for and sitting the
examinations.
4 SERVICE WITH AUXILIARY FORCES
Volunteer members of the non-regular forces may be granted 2 weeks
paid leave per annum in addition to their normal leave entitlement to
attend annual summer camp. Academic staff are only granted paid leave if
the Forces Unit cannot arrange exercises during the vacation periods. At
least one months’ notice should be given.
5 RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS
Where staff can show they are bona fide adherents of any organised
religion and that they require leave for the purpose of an official holy day
of that religion, the Corporation will allow up to 2 days paid leave.

6 SPORTING EVENTS
Staff who represent their country in sporting events may be granted paid
leave at the discretion of the College.
7 JURY SERVICE AND ATTENDANCE AS A WITNESS IN LEGAL
PROCEEDINGS
Any member of staff required to perform jury service or to attend as a
witness in legal proceedings will be released from the College for the
necessary period of time. If such member of staff is not required to
perform jury service or to attend as a witness in legal proceedings on any
particular day, he/she is required to attend work as soon as possible.
Copies of all forms etc should be forwarded to Human Resources and will
be retained on the employee’s personal file.
In each case, salary will be paid as normal. Any income received other
than the reimbursement of expenses properly incurred must be accounted
for to the College.
8 PUBLIC DUTIES
Paid time off for public duties will be agreed by your line manager and
Human Resources Dept. Public duties include membership of Public
Bodies such as School/College Governors, Councillors and Justices of the
Peace. Staff are allowed up to 18 days per annum.
