Information for Students on the Ecological Unpublished Database

Dear students,

Congratulations on making it to Friday Harbor! It’s a great place to be a student and conduct
research. One of the best things about it, actually, is the wealth of information available from
historical studies, in the same places you might be conducting research at now, dating back
through nearly six decades of unpublished student papers, government impact assessments, and
county documents. In fact, there’s so much information that in 2006 Dr. Molly Jacobs (then a
student of Dr. Richard Strathmann) working with FHL Director, Dr. Ken Sebens, began an effort to
compile the ecologically relevant data out of all of these papers to help future research efforts.

This is where you come in! Papers from classes (like the one you’re in now) are bound in volumes
and then stored in the library for future reference. FHL would like your help to keep the best
database possible. As you write up your methods and results for your research, there’s a few
things that the people working on the database look for in your paper that you might want to

We collect information on the following:
a) If you did a study in the field, what was the name of your study site(s)? Or, if you performed
lab studies, where did you collect your organisms?
b) Information from the site—GPS information is particularly helpful, but we also try and list the
site habitat and some of its characteristics. We also want to know if you kept track of any abiotic
factors at your site (salinity, temperature, etc.).
c) Species!! What species did you study? What kind of study did you conduct? Did you look at
reproduction? Genetics? Population densities? Behavior?

We have forms so you can fill out with the relevant information for when your papers will be
entered. It’s important that you fill this out accurately because it is how your paper will be put into
the database. This includes using accurate site and species names (no, really). Once you’ve done

The final step we ask you complete after filling out this form (to be emailed/handed to the lab
technician when they ask for it) is to also submit a PDF format (no Word document formats please,
if you need help with this talk to Craig Staude or Alan Cairns in the computer lab). This PDF should
be put it in a folder on the Abyss with your class name and year set up by your TA. Sometimes the
bound volumes of paper are lost, and your paper could be gone forever if this happens and there’s
