as a boarder with an Earth family. When they begin to suspect him, he reveals himself,
along with the news that Gort will destroy the Earth if provoked. THE DAY THE
EARTH STOOD STILL is such a basic Science Fiction story that many first-time
viewers have been stunned by the reverence in which it is held. The FX are minimal,
there are no 'space battles' or 'monsters', even the score, by the legendary composer
Bernard Herrmann, is simple, lacking the bombast of later 'epics'. Yet in it's very
simplicity, director Robert Wise has created a tale more timeless and relevant than many
other 'message'-driven SF blockbusters that followed (decade)

* Electric Horseman (1979) PG Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Willie Nelson,
Sonny Steele used to be a rodeo star, but his next appearance is to be on a Las Vegas
stage, wearing a suit covered in lights, advertising a breakfast cereal. When he finds out
they are going drug the horse in case its too frisky, he rides off into the desert... The
beginning is bad: Cowboy in Las Vegas? (The opening sequence is good and informative.)
It takes time and the movie becomes kinda nice: Cowboy where he should be, and the
always played for laughs woman-from-the-city out in the jungle dealt well here. The
story is a bit interesting too, if a bit out-of-date, but a fine premise. Robert Redford and
Jane Fonda are always good with any actor they get casted to. I liked them out-smarting
each other. So see it for the two really, it wouldn't have been worth watching without
them. (70's)
Elizabeth (1998) AW, lots nominations R The story of Elizabeth's ascendency to
the throne, the plot of the movie is full of palace intrigues, attempted assassinations and
executions. The movie starts with England divided by faith, Protestant vs. Catholic. The
queen, Mary Tudor has no heir and her Catholic supporters fear the succession of her
half-sister Elizabeth, a Protestant. They convince the queen to have Elizabeth arrested
and put in the Tower of London but the queen hesitates and eventually refuses to sign her
death warrant. It is announced that the queen is pregnant but it turns out to be a tumor and
she dies of it a while later. Her Catholic supporters are forced to give the throne to
Elizabeth. Elizabeth's first few years are shaky as she is not versed with the art of
realpolitik and "rules from the heart instead of the mind". There is also the question of
her succession as she is yet unmarried and her death without heir would mean the throne
falling back into Catholic hands. She has many suitors but she eventually rejects them all.
And aided by Sir Francis Walsingham she manages to kill all her enemies and ascends
the throne as the "Virgin Queen". I think everyone can agree that the filming of
the movie is beautiful. Acting performances, although overrated, are solid as well. As for
the're mistaken if you're looking for a history lesson, at least an -accurate-
history lesson. However, I don't think that is the purpose of this movie. The story of this
movie is about the transformation of a free-spirited girl into cold and ruthless yet capable
monarch. So, in that sense, it is more a history of Queen Elizabeth's emotional state and
development and tells a solid tale. (genre – bio)

Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) In this film, muckraker Michael Moore turns his eye on
George W. Bush and his War on Terrorism agenda. He illustrates his argument
about how this failed businessman with deep connections to the royal house of
Saud of Saudia Arabia and the Bin Ladins got elected on fraudulent circumstances
and proceeded to blunder through his duties while ignoring warnings of the
looming betrayal by his foreign partners. When that treachery hits with the 9/11
attacks, Moore explains how Bush failed to take immediate action to defend his
nation, only to later cynically manipulate it to serve his wealthy backers' corrupt
ambitions. Through facts, footage and interviews, Moore illustrates his contention
of how Bush and his cronies have gotten America into worse trouble than ever
before and why Americans should not stand for it.
Faith of My Fathers (05) FAITH OF MY FATHERS tells the true story of John
McCain's military service, capture, and imprisonment in Vietnam during the Vietnam war.
Nearly all of this made-for-TV movie is shot with a hand-held camera bringing the drama
in close and making it personal. The pacing is fine, although the commercial breaks
tended to disrupt more than average. The acting was the highlight of this production. The
unknown actor playing John McCain really captures his essence. About the only thing
that did not work in FAITH OF MY FATHERS was the shower peeping scene. It was out
of place and did not advance the story.

Family Man (2001)DVD Nicolas Cage A modern-day Frank Capra story. Jack

college girlfriend for a London trip. He's married to Kate, lives in Jersey and has two kids.
He, of course, desperately wants his life back for which he has worked 13 years for. He's
president of P. K. Lassiter Investment House and not a tire salesman at Big Ed's. He
drives a Ferrari and not a mini-van that never starts. And most importantly he doesn't
wake up in the morning with kids jumping on the bed. After a bad start, day by day he's
more confident in his new life and starts to see what he's been missing. Turns out money's
good to have but that's not everything.

Fantasia (2000) Steve Martin, Itzhak Perlman, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, James Earl
Jones, Angela Lansbury, Leopold Stokowski, In this update of Disney's
masterpiece film mixture of animation and music, new interpretations of great
works of music are presented. It begins with an abstract battle of light and
darkness set to the music of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Then we see the
adventures of a Humpback Whale calf and his pod set to "The Pines of Rome."
Next is the humorous story of several lives in 1930's New York City, scored with
"Rhapsody in Blue." Following is a musical telling of the fairy tale, "The
Steadfast Tin Soldier" set to Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. Then a
goofy Flamingo causes havoc in his flock with his yo-yo to the tune of the finale
of "Carnival of the Animals." This is followed by the classic sequence from the
original film, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" starring Mickey Mouse and followed
by "Pomp and Circumstance" starring Donald Duck as a harried assistant to Noah
on his Ark. Finally, we see the awesome tale of the life, death and renewal of a
forest in a sequence featuring the composition, "The Firebird."
A Farewell to Arms (1957) Jennifer Jones, Rock Hudson The story of an affair
between an English nurse an an American soldier on the Italian front during
World War I. … This is one of the greatest movies ever made. It really is.
With Rock Hudson as the lead and Jennifer Jones as his love interest, this pair
lights up the screen with their love for each other. The cinematography is
wonderful, the shots are well thought out, and they capture each moment perfectly.
(as if Rock Hudson needs any help!) When your happy in this film, your really
happy, when your sad, your really sad. Both are in the extreme cases. This film
has one of the saddest endings you'll probably ever see, so keep the tissues near
by...I know I needed them! Unlike the more recent "over-hyped" version, entitled
"In Love and War" which stars Chris O'Donnell, and Sandra Bullock, this version
stays very close to Ernest Hemmingway's Book. (A Farewell to Arms) Although
IL&W was a great movie, and shared a very sad ending, I still have to believe that
the older version was the better of the two. There's just something about it! Don't
take my w (first 15 minutes not recorded)

painted as a dedicated and intense young man who's focus can never be diverted.
       This is very likable and the viewer identifies with him and wants him to succeed;
despite some moments of him being distant, unfriendly, and on occasion a bit
pompous. Although a disclaimer at the beginning of the credits explains that this
is based on fact, some fictitious moments have been added, I still was drawn in by
