We are currently taking suggestions for our fall meeting.
So far two books, Three Daughters, by Letty Cotton Pogre-

novel about three daughters reconciling with their father, a

of “business casual?”
Although typically the season when
activities slow down, summer is the busiest time
of year for Olam Tikvah’s Membership Commit-
tee. Most new families join OT during the
summer, as preparations for the High Holy Days and the new school
year are beginning. (Your eyes do not deceive; there are more new
faces during the warm weather!) Membership is working hard to
show Prospective Members the best about Olam Tikvah. You’ve
probably seen us greeting in the lobby on Shabbat morning or
promoting OT at community-wide events, and perhaps you’ve
received a card wishing you r’fuah sh’laymah, condolence on a loss,
or congratulations on a new baby or wedding. You also know that we
mentor new OT families, host get-togethers for Prospective and New
Members alike, and deliver Shalom Baby and/or ShalomDC bags
throughout the Northern Virginia Jewish community.
But Olam Tikvah is more than the hard-working and wonderful
people on the Membership Committee. Olam Tikvah has over 660
member units, all of whom come together to both welcome our new
members and support our veteran members. All of us together make
OT a place for meaningful t’filah, a place for educational opportuni-
ties, a place for friendship, and—most importantly—a community.
So make sure to say hello to that unfamiliar face. Whether it is a
potential new congregant, someone who has just joined OT, or a
person who is “new to you,” the other person will appreciate your
greeting. And there is an excellent chance you’ll find more in common
than being in the same place at the same time…maybe they’ll know
where to find kosher marshmallows for s’mores!

My Israel Experience

We went to Masada (I’d like to say I climbed up, but I had a
fever of 102 that day, so I took the cable car). There is such an
amazing view! We could see all that King Herod built. As our guide
put it, he was the CEO. He created palaces, saunas and beautiful
bath houses. After traveling in the desert, all you want to do is
take a bath! After Herod “entertained” his guests, he could ply

fountain! The playground looked like my garage (old broken micro-
waves, toasters, you name it!). The children played outside by
themselves. There was a lot of incredible creativity (and no fear of
lawsuits)!
We also went to Neot Kedumim, a Biblical Landscape garden. We
experienced all seven species in amazing ways. Since we were there
before Shavuot, we were able to see the ripe wheat ready for harvest.

LETTER
To: Congregation Olam Tikvah and
2007 Woodson High School graduates
I want to write to you in the wake of an upsetting Baccalaureate
ceremony. Before agreeing to take part in the ceremony, I spoke
several times with the committee putting it together, to ensure that it
would be a ceremony that was comfortable for people of all faiths and
traditions. I was assured that those chosen to address the Baccalaure-
ate would speak of their faith but not proselytize or exclude any part of
the community.
Despite their reassurances, the experience of this year’s Woodson
Baccalaureate did not bear this out. Going forward, Rabbi Kalender is
working with the Fairfax County faith communities to change this
practice on a school district level. We expect that this will not happen
again.

JOIN US IN READING BIBLICAL HEBREW
Our Biblical Hebrew class is seeking new members. We meet
Tuesday mornings, 10:00am-12:00 noon, at Adat Shalom in Bethesda.
We are currently finishing the First Hebrew Reader (guided selections
from the Bible). Most of the class completed the EKS First Hebrew
Primer, which gave enough background in Hebrew grammar and
vocabulary to understand most word roots and the grammatical
patterns of most Biblical verses. If you have a background in
Hebrew, this is a fun and dynamic class, which explores meaning and
depth of classic Jewish texts in the original language. Students are at
different levels in the class, and there is ongoing review of difficulties
at all levels. The class is considering moving soon to Siddur study
and the structure and meaning of prayer services. Our teacher is Ira
Ungar.
The current fee is $200 for 10 two-hour sessions. Feel free to visit
a class at no cost to see if it is a good fit for you. Please contact Vicki
Breman, (202) 544-1319 or (202) 841-7096, for more information.
