MORE UNITY IN THE COMMUNITIES by: Roy Kelly

As we rapidly approach another season of holidays, it seems we all get in a greater hurry. With this in mind, I

would like to pause a moment to express on behalf of the staff and all our volunteers at The Fair-Town Times

our appreciation for your continued support. We also thank all our advertisers who make the Fair-Town

Times possible each month. The demand for your community newspaper continues to exceed our supply,

which I suppose is not a bad thing other than there are those who want a copy and are unable to get one. May

I suggest sharing your copy with neighbors or friends who did not get an issue. This, I am sure, can only

bring more unity to our communities. By the way, how did you do with matching the Pets to the People

contest last month? We have already started collecting pet and people pictures for another contest, so if you

want to enter, just email your photos to fair-towntimes@bellsouth.net . Or you can give the information to

any of our volunteers. I’m sure our pets enjoy seeing their pictures in the newspaper! In regards to our

communities, the fall colors have arrived and there is a noticeable chill in the air. This can only mean that

special time of Thanksgiving and Christmas is just around the corner. This is the time when families come

together and old friends get re-acquainted as well as new friendships often formed. Our communities seem to

be drawn closer, especially with all the events and festivals that will be taking place during the holiday

season. With that being said, good wishes go out to everyone, and I trust you will have safe travels for

yourself as well as family members. Also I hope the holidays will provide you with opportunities for creating

more long-lasting memories. In regards to Kodak memory moments, may I encourage you not to forget the

Fair Play and Townville Christmas parades. Now is the time to be preparing your entry in each parade or at

least picking out your spots to watch two of the greatest free shows in America! Sunday, December 6th, is the

date for the Townville parade followed by the Fair Play parade on Saturday, December 12th. Also remember

the Veteran’s Day Celebration on November 7th at Flowers by the Lake in Fair Play. Enjoy your

Thanksgiving turkey dinner and I’ll see you next month.

OFFICIALS AND RESIDENTS DEDICATE ADDITIONS TO DOUBLE SPRINGS COMMUNIITY PARK.

LOCAL AND STATE OFFICAIALS WORK TO

SECURE FUNDS FOR IMPROVEMENTS.

On Tuesday, September 22, residents from the

Double Springs Community gathered for a

ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate

improvements to Double Springs Community

Park. Recent improvements include a tree

house, spring riders, and a protective net to

contain the ball field and prevent foul balls

from entering the children’s play area.

These improvements were made possible by a

PARD (Parks and Recreation Development Fund)

Grant, secured due to the efforts of SC

Representative Don Bowen, District 8, with

matching funds provided by Anderson County

Councilman Tom Allen from District 4.

“I am proud to have been a part of this project,”

said Representative Bowen. “Double Springs

Community Park is in my district and it is good to

see these improvements for the good of this

community. The Double Springs Community Association is to be commended for their efforts

to make this park what it is today – one of the best kept parks in Anderson County.”

“It is always exciting to see county and state government work together with local communities

on projects that benefit residents,” said Councilman Tom Allen. “This community does an

excellent job of maintaining this park and keeping it clean and available to be used by everyone.

The wonderful turnout of residents this evening is evidence that we made an excellent

investment in this community by partnering to make these improvements a reality. I want to

especially thank Steve Hartsell, President of the Double Springs Community Association, for

his hard work and dedication to this community.”

What Breed Am I? Regina’s Story

(Continued from last month)

Regina was a stray dog who has been adopted by

Dr. Jordan. We received the results of her DNA

breed test, and they were very surprising. Her

results showed that she is 10-20% of each of the

following breeds: Dachshund, Beagle, Afghan

Hound, Dalmatian, Irish Setter, Norwegian

Elkhound and Yorkshire Terrier. She has less than

10% Great Pyrenees. While the Dachshund and

Beagle genetics are apparent, the other breeds

would never have been guessed from her

appearance!

There are now several DNA tests to determine the

breed of mixed breed dogs. At Crossroads Animal

Hospital, we carry a DNA test which is conducted

by a mouth swab. These kits can be purchased for

use on any mixed breed dog – they are highly

accurate though no test is 100% accurate. If you are

Under the Spotlight

Mr. Gene Thrasher, Fair Play

By: Joyce Schlock, Freelance Reporter

Riding down one of the many country roads in Fair Play, there are many interesting sights and sounds. On this

particular day, I was going to visit an old friend I had known since I was a young girl. I was looking for the sign

which read, “Thrasher's Auto Sales. As I turned up the drive, many memories came flooding back. My daddy

was a guitar pickin' man and he used to make music with Mr. Gene. I loved to hear them pick and sing. As we

would sometimes say, just Pickin' and Grinnin', as hours passed that seemed like minutes. Then many other

times they played those great old gospel hymns we learned to love so well.

Mr. Gene was sitting outside. It had been several years since I had seen him. But I soon recognized the

familiar smile I remembered from my childhood. We immediately began

talking about the “old days” and I felt right at home. Mr. Gene is a humble

man and it was hard to get him to talk about himself, so I began to ask him

questions about himself. I soon found out he had not always lived in Fair

Play; he was actually born in Hartwell, Georgia. As a young boy, he taught

himself to play guitar as he sang up and down the banks of the river. Gene

attended school in the Reed Creek area during the 30's (Gumlog) before his

family moved to South Carolina. He then attended school in Fair Play and

later joined the Army. He was one of 11 children. He later married Edna

Risner who also was from Hartwell and they became the parents of 12

children!! Wow! Six (6) boys and six (6) girls. He also has 36

Grandchildren, 36 Great Grandchildren and 79 Great-Great Grandchildren!

Double Wow! And what a legacy!

He worked at JP Stevens for many years, but his hobby is collecting STUFF, especially old cars. He enjoys

restoring them to their original beauty. He has a 1955 Chevy, a 1970 Chevelle, a 1963 and a 1964 Impala. This

hobby keeps him very busy, and he likes it that way. Even though he seems to tire more quickly, he is grateful

he can enjoy his life just as much, but at a slower pace.

His first wife and the mother of his children is deceased. He and his present wife, Martha, attend Fair Play

Church of God, where he sings and plays the guitar and the piano. Martha is a very community-minded lady

and always reaches out to families in need. They enjoy living in Fair Play. They feel there are good people in

the community and they are neighborly. Oct. 27 will be Gene's 87th birthday. That will be a big family

celebration! Where will they put everyone? Surely that will not be a problem; I am sure Mr. Gene is accustomed

to having lots of children and grandchildren around. One would almost be assured there would be some pickin'

at that party! He taught his Grandson, Corey Thrasher, Tony and Diane's son, to play guitar and gave him his

first guitar. Sometimes Corey is asked to play Amazing Grace, and he always plays the guitar his Granddad

gave him because he feels that would make him happy. Gene is thankful the Lord has given him a great family

and a long, happy life.

What a great visit with an old friend! As I drove away, I knew this was still the humble, God-fearing man I

always remembered. He had lived to see many changes in the world and in his life. Many people and things

will change over a lifetime, but a Southern Gentleman will never change. I am grateful to know Mr. Gene

Thrasher, my idea of a real “SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN.” What a wonderful example Mr. Gene has been for

this great family, his church, and the Fair Play community.

Thanks for the memories and we wish you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Under the Spotlight

DON BOWEN – TOWNVILLE

BY: ROY KELLY

Our “Under the Spotlight” profile for November is Mr. Don Bowen. Many of you know Don as

our state congressional representative from this area, but we wish

to share with you more about this individual. Don is the son of

Carson William and Rebecca Hunnicutt Bowen. He was born in

1945 in Charleston, SC. Don was told he learned to walk and run

on Folly Beach. He also recalls at age three of committing the

Cardinal sin of playing with matches, which resulted in setting

his parent’s garage on fire. Don remembers the sirens and

everybody pointing their finger at him when the fire investigation

began. This may explain why Don now is a strong supporter of the volunteer fire firefighters in

his district.

The Bowen family had two other siblings, another son, J. R., and a daughter, Rosta Palfrey. In

1956 the Bowen family moved to the Anderson area. Don became a member of the Trinity

Methodist Church that year, and that is where he and his family continue to attend services.

After graduating from Wren High School in 1963, Don attended the University of South

Carolina and obtained his degree in Marketing and Economics. He was a member of the South

Carolina National Guard based in Williamston. In 1971, Don married Tomilyn Forrester at the

First Baptist Church of Taylors. They have a daughter, Amy Elizabeth Martin, and two sons,

Don Carson Bowen Jr. and William Ward Bowen. The children have provided Don and

Tomilyn with much “grand parenting time” with five grandchildren.

Don’s work career began at age thirteen in the retail grocery business. He retired in 1991 from

Bi-Lo. His free time is spent with his hobbies, which involve doing small

construction projects, refinishing furniture, working with old cars, and

restoring old boats. Don and Tomilyn reside on Lake Hartwell where he

represents us in House District 8. The need Don felt for restructuring property

taxation prompted his political career, and since his initial election to the State

House of Representatives, he has addressed audiences in all the counties of

South Carolina on the subject of property taxation. Don has also put forth a

concerted effort to ensuring our local communities continue to be safe and

enjoyable places in which to reside.

In conclusion, Don and Tomilyn enjoy their time at Lake Hartwell, especially when the

grandchildren come to visit. Don relates that when the grandchildren share with him their

dreams, hopes, and future plans, this is the driving force which keeps him working towards a

better life for all of us. Don will be the guest speaker for the Rotary Club of Fair Play Veteran’s

Day Observation in Fair Play at 11:00AM on November 7th and he hopes to see all of you there.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Walking for Water

NOVEMBER 16TH On November 10, Townville Elementary School

will be participating in our first Walk for Water.

OVER THE YEARS. with the money we raise, we can provide clean

water for school children in Haiti.

Nine out of ten Haitians do not have running

water, and nearly half of the country’s 8 million

people do not have access to safe drinking water.

Clean water is one of the life-threatening problems

facing Haiti, the poorest country in the Western

Hemisphere, where the life expectancy is 51 years

and 80 percent of people live below the poverty

line. In Haiti, contaminated water is the leading

cause of infant mortality and illness in children.

Germs for hepatitis, cholera, and chronic

diarrhea are carried in water used for cooking and

drinking. Nearly every water source in Haiti has

become contaminated with human waste because

CLARA KAY’S GARDENING TIPS

The Clara Kay Garden Club celebrates

the 90th Birthday of Mrs. Babs Glymph.

It is time to enjoy the festivals and fairs in the cool weather that has come upon us here in the upstate. We have

continued to receive much needed rains that have helped revive the fall flowering plants, shrubs, trees, and our lakes.

We are still harvesting the last of the fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers. Now is the time to get your spring flowering

bulbs planted for spring. For some winter color, plant snapdragons, pansies, and ornamental cabbage in your garden.

November Gardening Calendar

Think about spring wildflowers and sow seeds now. Scatter the seeds and lightly top dress with soil to keep

seeds moist and the birds away from the seeds.

Feed new flower and vegetable plants with liquid fertilizer two weeks after planting them.

Now is a good time to plant and transplant trees, shrubs, and ground covers. Make your choices while the

deciduous trees have their leaves. Popular choices are crepe myrtles, red buds, maples, and sour gum to name

a few.

In low rain areas, water newly planted lawns, trees, and shrubs to keep them moist.

Throw leaves, weeds, and spent annuals and vegetables into the compost pile.

To fight peach blight and peach leaf curl, rake up the leaves and remove old fruit from nectarine and peach

trees. Spray with lime sulfur.

Cut asparagus to the ground after the tops turn brown.

Dig up tuberous begonias and store the tubers in a cool dry place until spring and warmer weather.

Dig, divide, and replant overcrowded perennials that have finished flowering.

Discourage winter weeds by putting down a pre-emergent. Or mulching around bedding plants, shrubs and

trees.

Start, repair, and feed cool weather lawns for growth in the fall.

Overseed your lawns for thicker lawns in the spring.

Happy Gardening

We offer our readers the opportunity to send questions. You can send your gardening questions to the Clara Kay

What are “cookies”?

When you go to many webpages, they often will save to

your computer a small data file, called a “cookie.” These

most often contain information about the site itself but

also information about your Internet address, the type of

browser you use (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox),

perhaps data about what options you chose at the

webpage, and other details related to your computer's

activities while at that website. Although some websites

do use this data to sort of “track” you and know

additional information about your web choices should

you return to their website, very often cookies are used

to help you interact with websites. If you login in at a In Loving Memory of William Spearman on his
