Thriller by Michael Jackson
Three Words:Excellence Improved Upon!!
Where Off the Wall was pretty much straight good times, Thriller
introduced dread into Michael Jacksons solo work. By 1995s HIStory, this
element curdled into overwhelming self-regard and out-of-touchness, but
here its bracing. While Thriller offers its share of cute (The Girl Is Mine, a
duet with Paul McCartney that was the albums first single; P.Y.T.), the
most memorable cuts remain Billie Jean, Beat It, and Wanna Be Startin
Somethin, all of which meld musical imagination and worried-mind lyrics.
Theres also the title track, which takes a cue from Parliaments concept
pieces in employing Vincent Price to warn that nonfunky forces will
terrorize yalls neighborhood. Thriller, of course, continues to battle with the
Eagles first greatest-hits package for the title of biggest-selling U.S. long-
player ever. Bonus material on this edition includes Someone in the Dark,
from Jacksons E.T. childrens album, and a Quincy Jones interview in
which the producer cites My Sharona as the inspiration for Beat It--and,
even better, the real-life Billie Jeans claim that Michael was the father of
one of her twins. --Rickey Wright
Personal Review: Thriller by Michael Jackson
All the non-music craziness about Michael Jackson aside, Thriller was and
is an incredible album. Im not a huge MJ fan, I mean the dude is pretty
freaky, but Thriller was a masterpiece album. I like a few MJ songs before
this (Dont Stop) and after (Black & White) but there was never a whole
album by him I liked except Thriller. Every song is great, and I really like
the bonus Quincy Jones interviews, the Bille Jean demo, and the song
Carousel that didnt make the original release. Thriller was a once in a
lifetime lottery winner of a record, and I enjoy this 25th anniversary special
edition thoroughly. My favorite tracks? The only song from the original
album I dont like is Lady in My Life. Billie Jean is one of my favorite all time
songs ever. EVHs guitar solo in Beat It is legenday for good reason.
Wanna Be Startin Somethin is genuis, Human Nature and PYT are
brilliant. The McCartney duet The Girl is Mine is charming, funny, and quite
ironic considering the later events between the two artists. Thriller gets 5
out of 5 stars from me in any version but the special anniversary edition is
great.
