How I Do
Why Can't She Get Airplay?
Res is a stunning black lady whose musical style I'd term as Neo Soul/Dub
with a Rock edge (if it must be classified). It's always interesting when I
come across artistes who refuse to be pigeon holed and Res fits perfectly
into that mould. This should also explain why this album, her stunning
debut, barely bothered the charts when it came out in 2001.
I'll start off right away with my favourite song; "If there ain't nothing" with a
Disco-like bass line and electronic flourishes. Simply stunning!
"700 mile situation", "Ice king", and "Let love" have a deep Dub bassline
with sprinklings of acoustic guitar, while songs like the social conscious
"Sittin' back" (the girl just loves that deep Bass line), "I've known the
garden" (with steel guitar and a D'Angelo-style groove), and the lovely
"Tsunami" (great acoustic guitar and lyrics asking to "ride this wave of
mine") are Neo Soul.
Title track "How I am" merges guitars to a Hip hop beat, very edgy and
nice, and closing is a hidden upbeat rock song ("Say it anyway" it seems to
be called) with an energetic Punk feel. Songs like opening cut "Golden
boys", "They-say vision" and "The hustler" are atmospheric rock edged
songs.
Her lyrics are deep and almost poetic, and her laid back vocals reminds
me a bit of Billie Myers (remember her?) or a smoother santogold.
This album is simply brilliant, and I urge you to go against the grain and get
it.
