					                           2004 SUMMER CONFERENCE
                                 Information Sheet

1. Registration will be in the North End of Exhibit Hall B in the Tulsa Convention
   Center. Registration will be open Tuesday, August 3, from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. On-site as
   well as late registration will be available at the self-serve computer bank in the Exhibit
   Hall Wednesday, August 4, 7:45 – 11:00 a.m. To view the step-by-step registration

2. On-line Registration Once again this year, all divisions will have the option to register
   online. All participants are strongly encouraged to pre-register and pre-pay! This will
   mean a quicker, more efficient check-in time when you arrive at the conference. On-line
   registration also provides the opportunity for you to verify the personal information on
   record at the ODCTE. Please visit for links to specific
   details and access to the on-line registration form. The registration form is located on a
   secured site, and will be available beginning May 10, 2004. When registering on-line,
   please be sure to print the registration form as a receipt for yourself and the stipend form
   to turn in to us at the end of conference.

   Only online registrants who register and prepay online prior to July 19 will be entered
   in a drawing for $177 from our teacher organization. Don’t miss this opportunity – the
   lucky winner could be YOU!

3. Special Needs: A space has been designated on the conference registration form for any
   conference participant to indicate special needs required to participate in conference
   events. If you have any special needs (dietary, physical, etc.), please be sure to complete
   this portion of the conference registration form. A staff member from your division will
   call you to discuss the appropriate arrangements. To assist us and to assure your needs are
   met, please register at least four weeks prior to the conference.

4. Designated Smoking Area: State legislation and Tulsa city ordinances require that all
   public facilities are smoke-free. The city ordinance does not permit smoking within 25
   feet of any entrance to a public facility. To accommodate our conference attendees who
   have a smoke/fragrance allergy, the area around the south entrance to the convention
   center (across from the Doubletree Hotel) have been designated a NON-smoking area and
   entrance. An area on the north side of the convention center, near the parking garage has
   been designated as the smoking area. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation
   in this matter.

5. Credit Cards and Electronic Checks may be used to pay OkACTE /ACTE dues and
   conference registration fees. MasterCard, VISA, American Express and Discover will be
   accepted this year and must be current at the time of registration payment. Please be
   aware that your credit card or your checking account will be charged immediately upon
   entering your account information.

6. CareerTech Expo: The CareerTech Expo features more than 150 exhibiting companies
   showcasing the latest products and services available in the career and technology
   education field! Learn more about how technology can be effectively used by teachers in
   the classroom. Discover what can help your programs and students excel-from textbooks
   to fundraisers, software to industrial technology- it’s all at the CareerTech Expo.
   Conference registration, all food concessions, and refreshments will be located in the
   Exhibit Hall. Add excitement to your tour of the exhibit hall by picking up a special
    “passport” on your way in. As you visit the five passport stations at participating
    exhibitor booths, get your passport stamped to become eligible to win a valuable prize
     during the show.

                                       with OkACTE President and award winners.

7. Stipend Policy The Summer Conference stipend process will remain the same as last
   year. We will use the “three ring” reimbursement method. The actual address of your
   school will determine which region you should use to calculate the amount of your
   stipend. To determine which region applies to you, please click here.

   The stipend schedule is as follows:
                  Region 1…………….……....$ 80

                  plus leadership seminar ……$ 20*

          *A maximum of 3 days stipend (not to exceed above dollar amounts) will be
          provided by the ODCTE based on attendance from Tuesday, August 3, at 10 a.m.
          through Thursday, August 5, at 12noon. Only officers staying for the Ok ACTE
          Leadership Seminar on Thursday will be given an additional $20 stipend.
          One-half day increments are $20.

   A stipend for attending Summer Conference will be provided to all administrators,
   funded local directors and assistants, teachers, counselors, school nurses, and support
   staff. You will be given a stipend based on the information you provide to your program
   chairperson or state advisor/administrator on the ODCTE Summer Conference stipend

        The stipend form will be in your conference packet. It will also be available during the
        conference from each ODCTE program chairperson. If you elect to attend a meeting in
        another division, you must receive confirmation of meeting attendance from that
        program's chairperson in order to receive credit for the stipend.

        NOTE: To receive a stipend, the stipend form MUST be completed and turned in to
        your program chairperson/division advisor on the FINAL DAY of conference
        attendance. Only registered CareerTech BITE program instructors are eligible to
        receive a stipend. Your stipend warrant will be mailed to your home address around
        September 1.

8.     Hot Topics! Concurrent Sessions will kick off the 37th Annual Summer Conference. All
       conference participants should attend these dynamic and informative concurrent sessions
       on Tuesday, August 3, from 10 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Choose from a variety of concurrent
       sessions designed to help support your instruction and business operations as well as
       increase your personal productivity and effectiveness. For workshop descriptions and

  9. The Premier Event: “CareerTech Securing Futures for Another 100 Years” (for all
     divisions) will be held in Exhibit Hall C of the Convention Center from 1:15 – 3:00 p.m.
     Tuesday, August 3. This session will feature a keynote address by Mr. John Alston. John
     is a former teacher, administrator and coordinator of staff development. He is an
     internationally know Performance Strategist who is also instructive, humorous and very
     dynamic as he shares experiences with his audiences. To learn more about John Alston,
     please visit his website at This session will also include opening
     remarks from Dr. Phil Berkenbile, our state director, along with the OkACTE
     Presidential candidate speeches.

10. The OkACTE Showcase: A Salute to Excellence will be held Wednesday, August 4,
    8:30 - 10 a.m. in Exhibit Hall C of the Convention Center. This general session is the
    business meeting of the OkACTE and includes the President’s greeting, Executive
    Director’s Address, the Gold Star School Awards as well as the entire OkACTE Awards

11. Award Recipients and Nominees are asked to sit in reserved seating at the front of
    Exhibit Hall C to help maintain the pace of the program. Division honorees include
    Outstanding Educator, New Professional, Outstanding New Teacher, Kaleidoscope, Pride,
    OATC Distinguished Achievement, OkACTE Distinguished Service and Teacher of the
    Year. Other awards to be presented include Support Staff Member of the Year, the Arch
    Alexander Award along with the Francis Tuttle Award. Silver Key recipients will be
    honored at divisional award ceremonies.

12. Ballots for OkACTE President-Elect will be included in your registration packets.
    This is the only time they will be distributed. The ballots include a space for marking
    your divisional membership for research purposes only. Ballots are due at the OkACTE
    Booth (in Convention Center Gallery) by 6 p.m. on Tuesday so they may be scanned.
    The results will be announced during the OkACTE Showcase between 8:30 and 10:00
     a.m. on Wednesday.

13. The OkACTE New Member/First-Timer Orientation is scheduled for Tuesday,
    August , 9:30-10:30 a.m., at the Doubletree Hotel, Buckingham Room. All new employees
    in the CareerTech (except teachers who have their own division orientation) and
    employees unfamiliar with Summer Conference are encouraged to attend this session. The
    purpose of this orientation is to explain registration, the benefits of membership in the
     OkACTE and the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the format
     and purpose of Summer Conference.

14. The OkACTE President's Reception will be held immediately following the OkACTE
    Showcase on Wednesday, August 4, 10:00 - 10:45 a.m., in the Food Court area of Exhibit
    Hall B. Everyone is invited as the CBITS Division honors new OkACTE President, Jim
    Comer. This reception will also be your opportunity to congratulate other OkACTE
    award winners. Please join your fellow professionals in honoring these outstanding

15. The Centennial Celebration Dinner/Dance Are you looking for an evening filled with
    fun and festivities in the Tulsa area? Join us for the Centennial Celebration: a night of
    Dinner and Dancing, Tuesday, August 3rd, 6:30p.m. - Midnight at the Tulsa Fairgrounds.
    Bring your family, friends, or co-workers and enjoy dancing to music across the decades.
    The BITE Division is hosting the 1920’s. If you have any suggestions, please contact
    Michelle Keylon at 405/743-5426 or The recommended dress is
    “casual”; however, feel free to dress to the decade of your choice! The ticket cost is
     $10.00 per person and includes dinner, non-alcoholic beverage and entertainment. (A
     cash bar will be available.) Because of the food and beverage guarantee requirements,
     tickets will not be available to purchase on-site. You must register in advance
     Cut-off is Monday, July 26th.

16. The Oklahoma Association for Minorities in Career and Technology Education
    (OAMCTE) will host its Annual Reception Wednesday, August 4, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
    in the DoubleTree Hotel, Suite 1811. The Annual OAMCTE business meeting is
    tentatively scheduled, Tuesday, August 3, 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., in the Doubletree
    Hotel, Suite 1811. All members and those interested in OAMCTE are encouraged to

    The mission of OAMCTE is to increase awareness of career and technology education in
    minority youth and adults for the purpose of providing leadership and direction in the
    economic and technical development of Oklahoma. Membership is open to all who
    advocate and promote career and technology education and who support full participation
    and advancement of minority Americans in this broad field. For more information, please
    contact Patti Pouncil at or call 918.227.0331. Dues are $40.00 for
    professional memberships and $25.00 for support staff. The membership forms may be
    downloaded        from       the      Summer         Conference        website        at Dues and membership forms may be returned to
    your division and routed to Teresa Seikel at the Oklahoma Department of Career and
    Technology Education, Career Services Division for processing.

17. The OkACTE Officer/Advisor Leadership Seminar is scheduled Thursday, August 5,
    12 noon - 6:00 p.m., at the DoubleTree Hotel, Manchester Room. (Lunch will be served
    at 12 noon.) All division officers and advisors are encouraged to attend this event. The
    purpose of this seminar is to equip the new officers of each division and section with
    knowledge of the association and its processes so that they can effectively perform their
    duties. If you are a candidate for office, please be prepared to stay for this training if

18. Parking

    The Adam's Mark Hotel will offer complimentary parking to all CareerTech attendees.
    Free parking will be offered on a limited availability basis in the attached parking garage
    as well as a nearby surface parking lot.

    Convention Center charges a $3 daily special event parking fee for the parking garage
    and surface lot. The Convention Center does allow in/out privileges to CareerTech
    Conference participants. Please use the Convention Center parking garage, located north
    of the Convention Center (near the cul-de-sac), whenever possible. This garage is
    convenient and has space to accommodate all attendees!

    DoubleTree Hotel Downtown provides complimentary parking to all registered hotel
    guests. All others pay a daily parking fee of $5. Please be aware that the DoubleTree does
    not own the surface lot behind the hotel. It is privately owned and there is a small fee to
    park in this lot. Do not park in the grass or gravel area. Vehicles illegally parked will be
    towed. If you are not staying at the Doubletree, please use the Convention Center
    parking garage to allow space for overnight guests.

       Route 1 - Downtown Shuttle
       Tuesday…….August 3       6:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
       Wednesday... August 4    7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
       Thursday …August 5    7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

       Continuous service will be offered to downtown hotels and convention center. The
       Downtown Shuttles will leave every 10-15 minutes at the foot of the Convention Center

       Route 2 – Suburban Shuttle serving the Holiday Inn Select, Marriott Southern Hills
       Hotel, and Hilton Southern Hills Hotel

       Tuesday….....…..August 3 6:00 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
       Wednesday ……August 4 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
       Thursday…….….August 5 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

       The suburban shuttle will leave the DoubleTree bus stop (across the street from the
       Convention Center) at the top of each hour for outlying hotels and return to the
       Convention Center. Round trip is approximately 45-50 minutes. A second shuttle will be
       operating during peak hours, leaving the DoubleTree Hotel bus stop at half past the hour.

        The final shuttle schedule will be posted in all conference hotel lobbies and at the
        Convention Center. Please consult these locations or your conference program for the
        final schedule.

   20. Recommended Dress for the duration of the conference is business attire. Reminder:
       meeting room temperatures and personal comfort levels vary widely. Since meeting
       rooms tend to either be too hot or too cold, please consider bringing a sweater or jacket so
       that you are prepared for varying temperatures.
