The Workshop will take place at the Agora Conference Center and Hotel (www.agora-
muenster.de) in Münster. The Conference Center is located at the Aasee lake
(www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/pan/aasee.htm), a large recreational area at the periphery
of the city. It is only a few minutes walk from the historic city center of Münster.
Münster (www.hhog.de/en/showCity_en.php?cityID=10012) is a higher administrative center
and university city with approximately 280,000 inhabitants situated in northwestern Germany.
Its official history begins in 793 when the Frisian monk Liudger founded a monasterium
(monastery) to which Münster owes its name. In 805 Liudger was consecrated as Bishop and
the settlement received the standing of a civitas (city). In the historical core of the city many
important examples of different architectural styles can be found. Among these are the
Paulusdom (St. Paul’s Cathedral) (www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/pan/dom.htm) which
was built on the threshold from the Romanesque to the Gothic style, the Gothic
Lambertikirche (St. Lamprecht’s church) (www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/pan/lamb.htm)
from the late 14th century, the Prinzipalmarkt (Principal Market)
(www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/pan/prinz.htm) depicted in the logo of the Conference with
the Rathaus (city hall) from the mid 14th century, and several buildings in the Baroque style
such as the Erbdrostenhof (bailiff’s high court)
(www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/nah/erb.htm) and the Schloss (former Episcopal palace)
(www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/pan/schloss.htm) which now forms the main building of
the University. The Friedenssaal (Hall of Peace)
(www.muenster.de/stadt/panorama/nah/fried_i.htm) in the city hall was the place where in
1648 the Treaty of Westphalia was signed putting an end to the Thirty Years War. The
surrounding of Münster, a region which is called Münsterland is famous for its numerous
moated castles
(www.hhog.de/en/showCity_en_detail.php?cityID=10012&folderID=10226&articleID=1960
#) .
The University of Münster (www.uni-muenster.de/en) was founded in 1780 based on a former
college of theology and philosophy from 1588. Today, with its about 40,000 students it is one
of the largest universities in Germany and an important economic, cultural and social factor
for the city.
About the Conference
The International Workshop on Nonlinear Optics and Excitation Kinetics in Semiconductors
is the 8th meeting in a series which started in 1987 in Bad Stuer and then continued with
workshops in Bad Stuer (1989), Bad Honnef (1992), Gosen near Berlin (1994), Graal-Müritz
(1997), Marburg (2000) and Karlsruhe (2003). It has an excellent tradition in covering the
whole range of nonlinear optics and the kinetics of electronic excitations in semiconductors.
Previous NOEKS meetings have always been of high international standard and often played
a pioneering role. NOEKS 8 stands in this tradition by providing a platform for the exchange
of new ideas and the discussion of recent developments. There will be no parallel sessions and
the lunches will be taken together at the Conference site which gives plenty of opportunities
for discussions.
Topics of NOEKS 8 are:
Ultrafast dynamics (coherent effects, coherent control, quantum kinetics, Terahertz
phenomena, …)
Low-dimensional and nanostructured systems (quantum wells, quantum wires,
quantum dots, coupled nanostructures, …)
Semiconductor quantum optics (photon statistics, luminescence, …)
Photonic crystals (2D and 3D photonic band gap materials, …)
Spin effects (spin relaxation and dephasing, spin transport, …)
Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons
Semiconductor-based quantum information processing
Organic semiconductors
Device physics (quantum cascade lasers, interband lasers, …)
NOEKS 8 will be held from February 20 – 24, 2006 at the Agora Conference Center and
Hotel which is located at the Aasee lake, a large recreational area only a few minutes walk
from the historical city center of Münster with its numerous architectural highlights from
different centuries.
The Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Stiftung (www.krupp-stiftung.de) will provide
special support for a limited number of participants from East-European countries.
Proceedings
The Proceedings of the Workshop will be published as a Special Issue of physica status solidi
(c). Manuscripts will be due on the first day of the Conference and will be subject to peer
review during the Workshop. Details concerning the length and the preparation of
manuscripts will be given later.
Abstracts
The abstract should be no longer than one standard sheet of paper (sizes A4 or 8.5’’ 10’’)
with a minimum border of 20 mm on all four sides. A minimum font size of 10 pt should be
used. The abstract should indicate clearly the name of the corresponding author as well as
his/her e-mail address, street address, telephone and FAX numbers. The abstract has to be
submitted electronically. Details on the submission process will be given later.
The abstract has to be submitted electronically via web-upload in pdf-format. The name of the
abstract file should contain the last name of the corresponding author. If you are submitting
more than one abstract, add a number to identify different submissions. An e-mail message
acknowledging receipt will be sent as soon as we have verified that the file is in good order
and meets the formats specified above.
Papers from NOEKS 8 will be published as a Special Issue of physica status solidi (c).
Manuscripts will be due on the first day of the Workshop and will be refereed during the
conference.
The abstract submission deadline is September 17, 2005.

Travel and maps
How to reach Münster:
By plane: Münster-Osnabrück International Airport (www.flughafen-fmo.de/GB/start.htm) is
the most convenient airport to reach Münster. It is a destination for direct flights from most
German and some European airports, such as London, Rome, Vienna, and Zurich. From other
places usually one has to go via Frankfurt or Munich. The airport is approximately 20 km to
the north of Münster and there is a frequent bus service to the Münster railway station. The
next airport with flights to some other European destinations is Dortmund. From there
Münster is reached by train in about one hour. The next airports with direct intercontinental
flights are Düsseldorf and Frankfurt. From both airports there are frequent train connections
by fast trains to Münster. From Düsseldorf it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, from
Frankfurt about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Train time tables can be obtained from the Deutsche
Bahn (www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en) (enter Muenster(Westf)Hbf and
Duesseldorf airport or Frankfurt airport).
By train: Many trains from regional to Intercity Express services arrive and depart from the
centrally located railway station. For train timetables to and from German as well as foreign
destination see the Travel Service page of the Deutsche Bahn
(www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en) (If you don’t have the umlaut “ü” please enter
Muenster(Westf)Hbf). Taxis and buses depart from the station’s front and rear entrances.
By car: Coming from the North leave the highway A1 at the Exit Münster-Nord and just
follow the road into town. Coming from South leave the A1 (direction Köln to Münster) at the
Exit Münster-Süd or, of you are travelling on the A43 (direction Wuppertal to Münster), just
continue to the end of A43. The simply follow the road for Münster Centrum. The address of
the Agora Conference center is Bismarckallee 5 (see the maps below).
