A Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA)-required standard transaction to advise why it
was rejected by Highmark Medicare Services. (The TA1
is also used by other health insurance plans.)
It is also known as the Interchange Acknowledgement.
A TA1 transaction will only be received if the ISA 11 of
your 837 claim file is a delimiter that must be different
than the data element separator, component element
separator, and the segment terminator.
To see if your file was rejected by Medicare due to an
Interchange Control Structure error. The TA1 is
generated immediately if the file rejected
To determine what errors are in your file.
The TA1 is available immediately after sending your file
to Highmark Medicare Services lF the file is rejected.
The TA1 is not generated if the file does not have an
Interchange Control Structure error.
The TA1 is available for you to retrieve for 45 business
Your vendor may have programmed your software to
automatically retrieve the TA1 for you. If you are unsure,
you should contact your vendor.
If your software is not programmed to automatically
retrieve the TA1, you must enter the following command
on our bulletin board after submitting your claims: 2.

NOTE: If a TA1 report does not generate immediately after
the file is received, then the file did not reject at the TA1
level. The sender should retrieve the 999 report. More

The TA1 segment is the second segment in the file after
the ISA segment.
It is imperative to look for an R, as illustrated in the
TA1*000000007*091006*1248*R*024 (R = Rejected)
If you want to be able to determine what errors caused
your file to reject, you will need to obtain the TA1
Technical Report 3 (TR3) from the Washington
Publishing Company (WPC). The guide explains each
element and segment contained in the TA1.
The TA1 specifications are part of the 837: Health Care
Claim: Institutional or Professional Technical Report 3.

After your file passes the TA1 edits, the next edit level is
the X12N 999 Implementation Acknowledgement which
indicates whether Highmark Medicare Services received
