CROSS CURRICULAR



ARRC/CMT Team Planning – July 17

Teacher teams will have the opportunity to collaborate with educators across the district in creating unit plans and revising

current curriculum maps for the upcoming school year. LCIS & CIS will be on hand to provide support.



Technology Integration in Elementary Science and Math

Learn how to transform your teaching of science and math, using technology to more seamlessly tie all fields together (including

Power of Two (Inclusion Co-Teaching) – July 24 & 25

Audience: Elementary General and Special Educators (co-teachers), Administrators

Two professionals, a general educator and a special educator, with different instructional expertise, can enrich the educational

experience for all students in a classroom to maximize student achievement. Participants will gain information regarding

research and rationale supporting “Power of Two”, essential components of effective “Power of Two” implementation, and have

the opportunity to apply these components in planning for the 2006-07 school year. A panel of teachers currently implementing

“Power of Two” will share the impact on student performance. Many ideas for creating an engaging, structured, and caring

environment where students follow multiple pathways to accomplish learning outcomes will be presented.



Procedures & Practices for the Special Needs Student – July 18

Participants will gain knowledge in the areas of alternative student assessment, IEP/BIP implementation, data collection and

progress monitoring along with ARD etiquette and procedures.



CHAMPS – July 18

Presenter: Marcie Godbee

Audience: K-12 teachers and SpEd. and administrators

CHAMPs is a modular series of materials designed to help classroom teachers develop (or fine tune) an effective classroom

management plan that is proactive and positive. The techniques included in this program have been derived from a large and

varied body of research literature that has identified consistent and reliable findings concerning how effective teachers manage

student behavior and enhance student motivation.



TxBESS Training for Mentors – July 18

Presenters: Debi Price & Debbie Hester

Audience: Elementary teachers and administrators

Adopted by RRISD, TxBESS is an initiative of the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) to implement a beginning

teacher support system in order to increase beginning teacher retention and effectiveness, thus increasing student achievement

5th Sense Training – July 26 – 27

This two day training will focus on the 5th grade Math TEKS and include intervention strategies, lessons, and assessments.

Participants will engage in the activities that promote deeper conceptual knowledge of mathematics.





Elementary TEXTEAMS – July 25

Audience: 3rd - 5th grade teachers, Special Education teachers

The focus for this training will be on developing students' number sense of fractions and algebraic thinking. Emphasis will be

placed on conceptual understanding, higher level problem solving, and questioning techniques. Participants will engage in

hands-on activities to model these concepts. (6 hrs. TAG credit) The workshop will include ESL strategies.

FOSS – July 24

Audience: K-2 teachers

In this full day training, participants will use hands-on learning with FOSS materials to experience the instructional pedagogies

that are central to maximize student learning. These include: inquiry, hands-on active learning, multisensory methods, student to

This half day session focuses on the use of journals/notebooks to write about inquiry. Participants will create a professional

journal while learning how to use journals/notebooks in their classrooms as effective tools to make science (and all subjects)

more meaningful and authentic for students as they observe, record, and reflect on what they’ve learned.





Strategies for Success on TAKS: Reading, Math, and Science – July 20 (1:00 – 4:30)

This half day session will cover various strategies for TAKS success in reading, math, and science. Strategies will include

vocabulary development in math and science, reading in content areas, ESL strategies that work for all students, and test

preparation.

Participants will learn how to connect the life, earth, and physical strands of science for themselves and their students by

focusing on the interactions of matter, energy, and organisms in the carbon, nitrogen, and water cycles. All levels have these

concepts in their TEKS, even when the cycles are not specifically named.



Using Learning Logs in Science & Social Studies – July 20

Presenter: Heidi Herold & Kimberly McKenzie

Audience: K-5 teachers, SpEd. teachers, administrators

This session will demonstrate the value of learning logs used primarily in science and social studies instruction. We will

demonstrate how these logs can be used to assess student learning through students' reflections, responses, and illustrations.

We will also discuss how learning logs integrate reading and writing into the content areas. We will also model how to implement

the learning logs in the classroom and how they can be used as a tool to bring parents, students, and teachers together in the

learning process. REGISTRATION FOR THIS COURSE IS OPEN THROUGH JUNE 12TH.

Reading and Writing Tools for Social Studies – July 12

Reading and writing tools are essential for learning in the social studies. This session provides strategies to engage students in

thinking about the content at higher levels and to experience content in more meaningful and challenging ways. It also

addresses way social studies and language arts instruction can be integrated.

This workshop will help participants plan rigorous activities to accelerate English language learning. Techniques for teaching

reading, writing, speaking and listening will be incorporated with the Hampton Brown adoption materials. The text Balancing

Reading & Language Learning: A Resource for Teaching English Language Learners, K-5: by Mary Cappellini will be given to

participants.





Accelerated ESL Strategies 3-5 – July 12

Audience: 3-5 Bilingual and ESL teachers

This workshop will help participants plan rigorous activities to accelerate English language learning. Techniques for teaching

reading, writing, speaking and listening will be incorporated with the Hampton Brown adoption materials. The text Balancing

6 + 1 Trait Spanish Writing – July 12 & 13

Presenter: Noelia Cortez Benson

Audience: Elementary bilingual teachers

In this two-day institute participants will learn how to use the 6+1 Trait® approach to develop the writing skills of their students in

English and Spanish and how this approach links instruction and assessment and children’s literature with writing. This institute

gives teachers concrete ways to present the writing process and to clarify revision by providing instructional tools and the

vocabulary needed to describe, teach, and assess the six identified criterios: ideas, organización, voz, vocabulario, fluidez, and

uso de la lengua that are the foundations of good writing. The session will be conducted mainly in Spanish to give teachers a

common language for educational purposes. HCDE is recognized as a Regional Training Site by Northwest Regional

Educational Laboratory.



ESL Strategies & Certification – July 18 & 19

Presenters: Michele Collins & Jenna Tintera

Audience: PK – 12 teachers, bilingual teachers, administrators, counselors, librarians, CIS

Participants will come away from this training with an understanding of research-based, effective instructional methods and

techniques for ESL classrooms as well as preparation for the TExES ESL certification test. Participants can register for the

August 5, 2006 TExES test #154 (English as a Second Language supplemental test) on the State Board of Educator Certification

website, http://www.texes.nesinc.com/, by the appropriate deadline.



Ready-to-Go Activities for the ESL Classroom – July 20

Presenters: Michele Collins & Jenna Tintera

Audience: K-12 teachers, bilingual teachers, including teachers who are already ESL certified and administrators

This workshop is packed full of strategies to support English language acquisition in all content areas. Techniques will include

ideas for classroom management, vocabulary development, and the integration of reading, writing, speaking and listening

objectives. Each participant will receive a copy of Zero Prep: Ready-to-Go Activities for the Language Classroom by Laurel

Pollard and Natalie Hess.





Sheltered Instruction Training for Elementary Teachers – July 25

Presenters: Julianne Gula and Miriam Melian

Audience: Elementary Teachers, Administrators, Counselors

Teams of core content teachers, ESL teachers, counselors and administrators will learn about 1st and 2nd language acquisition

and how they are related. Participants will also become familiar with sheltered instruction and some of the basic strategies for

working with English Language Learners. Participants will be expected to produce sheltered instruction strategies and activities

that they can use in their classrooms.

Sheltered Instruction Refresher – July 26

Audience: K – 12 Teachers, who have already attended the Sheltered Instruction Training

Participants will apply sheltered instruction strategies to their specific core content area for their classrooms. They will review

concepts about language acquisition and general strategies for working with English Language Learners. In addition,

participants will be expected to produce sheltered instructional strategies and activities that they can use in their classrooms.





4th and 5th Grade Science – July 27

Presenters: Julianne Gula and Miriam Melian

Audience: 4th and 5th Grade Science Teachers

Participants will apply sheltered instruction strategies to their core content area – 4th and 5th grade Science. These general

strategies will assist in working with English Language Learners in the Bilingual and Model 2 classrooms. In addition,

participants will be expected to produce strategies and activities that they can use in their classrooms.

Heart of Texas Writing Project & 6 Traits – July 10 & 11

This training will support teachers in implementation of writing workshop and will provide detailed information on the use of the 6

+ 1 Traits rubrics and incorporating the traits into the writing process. This 2-day workshop will include ESL strategies.

Dyslexia Strategies for Reading, Writing and Spelling -- July 10

Presenter: Jana Graves & various Itinerant Dyslexia Teachers

Audience: K – 12 teachers, SpEd. teachers

The morning will let the participants experience a dyslexia simulation to better understand the struggles dyslexia students

experience. The afternoon will include various topics about dyslexia and give the participants helpful information and strategies

to assist students with reading, writing and spelling







GIFTED & TALENTED



GT Update: Tiered Lessons – July 17

Presenter: Nicole Shannon

Audience: Elementary and middle school teachers

Every classroom has students of varying ability levels, especially those which contain clusters of gifted students. This session

focuses on creating tiered assignments and activities, a strategy which allows the teacher to focus on the same TEKs with all

students at the same time, but at levels which match student readiness, interest, and learning profile.



GT Update: Got Questions? – July 11

Presenters: Sheila Mulbry and Susan Tjon

Audience: Elementary teachers

Learn how to extend your differentiation to include higher level questioning and thinking. Participants will learn practical

applications for several topics, including types of questions and questioning strategies, convergent and divergent questioning,

SCAMPER technique, Tony Ryan's Thinkers' Keys, mindmapping, and questioning using Bloom's. Assessment and

accountability issues with differentiation or tiered assignments will also be addressed. Teachers are encouraged to bring unit

ideas for developing differentiation activities.



GT Update: Gifted Students - One Size Doesn't Fit All – July 19

Presenter: Carroll Taggart

Audience: K-12 Teachers and administrators

We will look deeply at the attributes and characteristics of gifted children from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Several ways to identify the under identified bilingual or minority gifted child will be discussed. Participants will be provided

information to help them find the gifted traits in exceptional children. The afternoon will be an adventure in bringing out creativity

and quality in products. Participants will go home with a packet of creative activities to use in their classroom.



GT Update: Advanced Primary Readers – July 18

Presenter: Beth Moore and Staci Kirchner

Audience: K-2 Primary teachers

In this session, we will look at the characteristics of primary students who are advanced in the area of reading and explore a

variety of strategies to meet their needs and provide challenge for them in the classroom. Materials from the Texas Reading

Initiative Task Force for the Education of Primary Gifted Children will be utilized.



GT Update: Critical and Logical Thinking – July 13

This training will give teachers the ability to start up and implement service-learning opportunities in their classroom or school.

This instructional strategy offers students a chance to plan their own solutions to authentic, community problems while they learn
