Dear John,
You would think a 50-year-old woman would have more sense than to voluntarily walk and run for 10
weeks in the heat of the summer! Obviously I don’t, because starting in May, I am going to be walking and
running (or crawling) for an important cause – helping promote heart disease awareness so young women
can learn about this devastating disease early enough to help prevent it.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than AIDS, breast
cancer and lung cancer combined. On July 26th, women and men will unite to walk or run at an event to
help promote heart disease awareness. The Boston Scientific Heart of Summer 5K & 10K is a unique event
with a mission to educate women about the role of health and fitness in the prevention of heart disease.
As part of my training efforts, I want to raise at least $500. So, yes, this is a plea for your emotional and
financial support. A $5 donation for every week that I train would be wonderful, but I am grateful for
whatever contribution you would like to make. Your support will help others win the battle over heart
disease. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this race stay in the local community to help fund local
heart health initiatives. Last year we raised over $25,000 and funded efforts such as x,y z.
I appreciate whatever you can give, and if the enclosed self-addressed stamped envelope inspires a little
guilt, so much the better.
I have begun training for the walk and promise a blow-by-blow tell-all when it’s over. It certainly promises
to be an unforgettable challenge!

Dear John
Five years ago, I lost my wife to heart disease. To honor her memory and to prevent our daughter from
having to fight the same battle, I have registered to run in the Boston Scientific Heart of Summer 5K &
10K being held on July 26th at Lake Nokomis.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming more lives than AIDS, breast
cancer and lung cancer combined. Unfortunately, many women are still not aware of their risks and aren’t
doing enough to prevent this disease.
Part of my commitment to the event is training for 10 weeks to be able to run the 10K, which is 6.2 miles.
The other part of my commitment is to raise $500, money that will go towards helping others win the battle
over heart disease. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this race stay in the local community to help
fund local heart health initiatives. Last year we raised over $25,000 and funded efforts such as x,y z.
I appreciate whatever you can give. I thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
John Doe
