WHEREAS:    This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Alice M. (Williams)
            Jackman on May 4, 2001; and

WHEREAS:    Alice was the beloved wife of the late Beresford Jackman; and

WHEREAS:    Alice’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her children
            Alan, Philip and Janis Jackman; her daughter-in-law Lana Jackman; her grandchildren
            Scott and Marc; and her many relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS:    Alice will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:   That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of

WHEREAS:    The Cambridge-Yerevan Sister City Association will welcome ten educators arriving in Boston on
            May 13, 2001 for a three-week academic, training and cultural program focused on current
            education issues in Armenia; and

WHEREAS:    The participants, with 179 years of experience among them, are from Goris, Sissian, Kapan,
            Meghri and other cities and villages in the Syunik region of Armenia, bordering Azerbaijan,
            Nakhichevan and Iran; and

WHEREAS:    Volunteer host families will provide their guests homestays, lodging, meals, and an experience in
            American home life; and

WHEREAS:    The educators will visit public, private and charter schools, discuss issues with American educators
            and learners in urban, suburban and rural communities, interact with institutions of higher
            education and non-profit organizations; and

WHEREAS:    Participants in this visit will talk with faculty, students, parents, directors, superintendents,
            principals and content specialists to emphasize that learning is a partnership. Local educators from
            over fifteen organizations will discuss their best practice and current challenges with the visitors;
            and

WHEREAS:    On Tuesday, May 15, 2001 Cambridge-Yerevan Sister City Association will host a reception
            welcoming the ten education professionals from Syunik, Armenia at the Sheraton Commander
            Hotel, Terrace Room located at 16 Garden Street; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:   That this City Council extend a warm welcome to the visitors from Armenia and a fruitful and
            happy experience; and be it further

RESOLVED:   That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this
            resolution to the Cambridge-Yerevan Sister City Association on behalf of the entire City Council.

WHEREAS:    Memorial Day is a time set aside to pay homage to the men and women of all wars as well as to
            recognize the suffering and loss wrought by war and to commit ourselves to strive to build the
            bridges of unity and understanding that can go far towards preventing future wars; and

WHEREAS:    In celebration of Memorial Day, we pause to give recognition to the brave women and men of all
            branches of the service who have displayed the epitome of courage and dedication to duty; and

WHEREAS:    The memory of an American veteran is one of a soldier in the next foxhole, valiantly serving our
            country while enduring the horror of war, a nurse dressing the wounds of battle-weary soldiers, or
            simply the memory of a loved one lost forever; and

WHEREAS:    For some, the memory is named etched in a black granite wall in the Nation's capital; and

WHEREAS:    This day, Memorial Day, is an opportunity to pay tribute to the sacrifices of all American's
            veterans, an opportunity to honor the more than one million men and women who have fought and
            died on battlefields around the world so that we might enjoy the freedoms we have today; and

WHEREAS:    Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 28, 2001, with a parade exiting the Cambridge
            Common at 9:30 a.m., followed by memorial observances at the Cambridge Cemetery and at
            Weeks Bridge on the Charles River; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:   That the City Council does hereby salute and applaud the brave fallen women and men who have
            served so courageously to preserve the freedom and safety not only in the United States, but all
            over the world.

WHEREAS:    Ann administered the waiting list for public housing and the Leased Housing Program;

WHEREAS:    Ann was highly regarded by the staff of the Cambridge Housing Authority and city
            agencies which came in contact with her in her official capacity; now therefore be it

WHEREAS:    On April 15, 1986 Mitchell was promoted to the Senior Carpenter at the Plant

WHEREAS:    On May 21, 2001, Patricia Moran, a Cambridge resident for over 25 years, will earn a
            Master’s Degree in Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley University; and

WHEREAS:    This degree is the culmination of many years of hard work and sacrifice made by Patricia
            Moran in her tireless pursuit of higher education and self-improvement; and

WHEREAS:    Despite working full-time and raising three sons, Wayne, Jason and Nicholas, Patricia
            Moran earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Lesley
            College in 1994 and enrolled in the Master’s Degree Program shortly thereafter, earning
            both degrees by enrolling in night and weekend classes; and

WHEREAS:    Patricia Moran’s strong work ethic has set a positive example for her children in serving
            as a model for success that has motivated Wayne, Jason and Nicholas to set standards of
            academic success that have earned them distinguished honors at Cambridge Rindge and
            Latin School and beyond; and

WHEREAS:    Having begun her teaching career as a Home Visitor in the Cambridge School
            Department in 1980, Patricia Moran experienced the joys of facilitating learning between
            parents and children and helping to promote language and cognitive development; and

WHEREAS:    Patricia Moran currently employs her talents and concern for children as Head Teacher
            of the First and Second Grade Classrooms at the Lesley Ellis School where she has
            taught for almost 15 years; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:   That this Cambridge City Council does sincerely congratulate Patricia Moran on the
            educational and personal accomplishments that she has achieved as a working mother
            and dedicated professional and send our best wishes as she prepares to receive her
            Master’s Degree on May 21st; and be it further

WHEREAS:    This event is being sponsored to promote awareness of cardiovascular fitness and is being

WHEREAS:    "Footsteps for Life: Walking your Way to Health" is a part of the Cambridge Public Health
            initiative "Golden Shoes;" and

WHEREAS:    Cambridge Public Health initiative "Golden Shoe" Event is running from May 1-30th,
            2001; and

WHEREAS:    One hundred "Golden Shoes" have been hidden throughout the city in places where
            people walk, along walking paths, in neighborhoods and parks; and

WHEREAS:    If a specially marked pair of golden shoes is found, the person who finds the shoes will
            receive a free pair of Saucony Walking Shoes and will be entered into a grand prize
            drawing for a $1,000 shopping spree; and

WHEREAS:    Walking reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and is beneficial to the joints; and

WHEREAS:    Cambridge is committed to promoting walking through providing safe and accessible
            sidewalks; now therefore be it

RESOLVED:   That the City Council go on record supporting the Public Health Initiative and the
            "Golden Shoe" Event presented through the month of May and urge all residents in the
            city to go out and walk for their health and look for the specially marked golden shoes

WHEREAS:    Leo was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Nocella) Temmallo; and

WHEREAS:    Leo’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his children Robert P.

WHEREAS: Tuesday, June 5, 2001 marks the ninth Cambridge First Day at MIT
         celebration — an annual event established in 1993 by MIT President Charles M.
         Vest to highlight the vital economic and cultural partnerships between the City of
         Cambridge and MIT; and

WHEREAS: MIT has honored dozens of Cambridge businesses, organizations, and individuals
         representing many different sectors of our community over the last nine years for
         their lasting contributions to the enhancement of our collective quality of life in
         Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: MIT's Office of Government and Community Relations and the City's Department
         of Human Services have joined together to host the 2001 Cambridge First Day
         event, celebrating the activities and programs of four organizations that have
         significantly contributed to the advancement of community building in our City;
         and

WHEREAS: The highlight of this year's event will be the presentation of four Cambridge First
         Day awards—accompanied by $1000 checks—as a salute to the extraordinary
         Cambridge organizations that are being honored for their community building
         philosophies and actions; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Cambridge City Council does hereby congratulate The Area IV Youth
          Center, The Cambridgeport Children’s Center, The Cambridge Citywide
          Senior Center, and the Friends of Cambridge Athletics for serving as role
          models in our community; and be it further

WHEREAS: This day the City of Cambridge honors a true son of Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore Francis Valenti was born in Cambridge on March 11, 1926 to
         Alessandro and Ines, both of whom were born in Italy; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore grew up in Cambridge with his ten brothers and sisters: Lola, Jimmy,
         Joey, Nicky, Sonny, Dede, Leanna, Richie, Donald and Bobby; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore, like so many young men of his generation, answered the call to wartime
         service in late 1944, leaving behind his high school studies at Rindge Technical
         School and joined the ranks of the United States Army, bravely fighting back the
         German Army; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore was killed in action in Germany on March 12, 1945 at the terribly young
         age of nineteen, while fighting for his country; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore, prior to departing for the war in Europe, left behind his pals, as well as
         his “Pals” of The Warren Pals; and

WHEREAS: On January 5th, 1961 the site we are now standing on as we gather here today to
         honor Salvatore, was dedicated by the City of Cambridge to Salvatore as the
         “Salvatore Valenti Library” in honor of his valor, bravery and the tragic loss of
         this young life; and

WHEREAS: Salvatore Valenti is a member of what we now call “The Greatest Generation”,
         the World War II era generation that sacrificed the most, at the earliest age for this
         great and wonderful country of ours; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That in acknowledgement and appreciation of the young men who interrupted
          their lives to go off to war before completing their high school education, many of
          whom never came back, the City of Cambridge now and herewith proudly
          presents to the family of Salvatore Francis Valenti his Diploma, that he so richly
          deserves, as a member of the Rindge Technical School graduating Class of 1946,
          in recognition of his sacrifice; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to prepare a suitably engrossed
          copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Salvatore F. Valenti on
          behalf of the entire City Council.
