Greetings from Ohlone College
A W O R L D O F C U LT U R E S U N I T E D I N L E A R N I N G
The Ohlone College Chamber Singers have historically subscribed
to the precepts of the College stating we are “a world of cultures
united in learning.” To this aim, over the past twenty years we have
traveled to twelve different countries on seven international concert
tours sharing our culture and experiencing theirs.
We clearly recognize the importance of China’s ancient history and
the dynamic role it plays in the world today. Our College celebrates a
sister-college relationship with three different institutions in China and
plans to expand these programs are currently underway. In addition
our faculty has participated in many exchange programs in the past
three years with colleges, universities and arts academies in China.
Our arts faculty has led the way in this venture as we have had five
different visiting scholar programs in China during the past three
years. Professor Dennis Keller, conductor of the Chamber Singers,
has spent portions of the past three years at Zhejiang Academy of
the Arts, Liaoning Normal University and the Shenyang Conserva-
tory working with choirs, teaching vocal master classes and offering
lectures at each. Additionally, we have hosted various visiting
delegations of educators and performing ensembles from China on
our campus.
It is a natural extension of our interest and commitment to international
education that our premier campus performing organization, the
Ohlone Chamber Singers, comes to China continuing and expanding
this dynamic relationship. We hope this group, while sharing the stage
with local choirs in Dalian and Hangzhou, in addition to performing in
Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, will further this sense of good will
and accommodation between our countries.

Concert Season Ohlone Chamber Singers
2008-2009
The Chamber Singers first appeared, in their present incarnation, in 1987,
under the direction of its current Musical Director Dennis L. Keller. The
choir currently numbers 32 auditioned voices composed of adult singers
representing twelve San Francisco Bay Area communities. The average
age of the choir is 49 years, and we are made up of teachers/professors
(10), professional musicians (6), and scientists, secretaries, psychologists,
administrators, medical workers, and other occupations. The group is also
available to talented College students. The choir performs an eclectic array
of literature extending back to the Renaissance and through the most
contemporary idioms. Although the group sings literature from all periods
their tendency is music from the late Romantic and Contemporary eras,
and folk arrangements from around the world.
Since 1989 the Chamber Singers have been heard in concert on seven
European tours performing in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England,
France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Scotland, and Poland where they have
performed to critical acclaim. The choir has performed concerts in many
spectacular settings, including Chartres Cathedral, Ste. Chapelle in Paris,
Basilica San Marcos in Venice, the Duomo in Florence, the Dom Cathedral
in Salzburg and Saint Thomas Kirche in Leipzig. We are happy to be on
our 2009 concert tour of the People’s Republic of China. Our itinerary will
include Beijing, Dalian, Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. If you should
wish more information about the Chamber Singers you may access our
web page at www.chambersingers.org. If you would like more information
about Ohlone College please go to www.ohlone.edu.
The Choir has released five studio-recorded compact discs. In addition,
we have a compact disc of our second friend-raiser recital, featuring
soprano Janet Holmes. The Chamber Singers season also includes the
annual “Masterworks” concert, which features the choir with orchestral
accompaniment, performing the seminal works
of choral literature from all
historical epochs.
