HYMNS AND ARIAS
“Gwlad y Gân – The Land of Song” is a title
acknowledged throughout the world as belonging to
WALES. To the Welsh, singing is as natural a part of
life as breathing, which is why, even in exile, there is a
Male Voice Choir in Hong Kong.
Formed and nurtured by the few who managed a
EMYNAU A CHANEUON strained harmonic sound at the 1977 St. David’s
Society Dinner, the Choir now holds a unique and
established reputation. Its members, though not all of
CÔR MEIBION, Welsh origin, are all of a Welsh character. The songs
are also mainly in Welsh and sung in a style that can
HONG KONG only be described adequately by the Welsh word –
“hwyl”. Not directly translatable, it involves a spirit,
feeling and commitment in contributing towards the
harmonies of the music.
Although the Choir members rehearse weekly and
perform under disciplined direction, the “hwyl” of the
singers is usually very contagious amongst the
audience. This small collection of hymns and arias is in
itself an invitation. An invitation to participate in and
to share, for however brief, a moment of Welsh magic.

Dear land! To thee our lips are breathing,
Calm is the sea, A song of praise, a song of praise.
No wondering breezes, For thee our swords we are unsheathing,
Disturbs the stillness of the deep, Our arms we raise, our arms we raise!
The twilight slowly darkens o’er us Should discord fling her darts around us,
And lulls the weary world to sleep Or foes invade; May He that oft with vict’ry
And lulls the weary world to sleep Crown’d us, guide us and aid, guide us and aid.
Calm is the sea, On the breeze a sound is stealing,
The tide advancing, That sweetly each ear charms;
Upon the strand in silence steals Let no clamour rudely pealing
A silence fills the little harbour, Disturb the strain melodious,
And lifts and moves the fisher keels Companions now in arms!

31. MORTE CHRISTE My Lord what a morning
My Lord what a morning
When I survey the wondrous Cross My Lord what a morning
On which The Prince of Glory died, When the stars begin to fall
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride. You’ll hear the trumpets sound
To wake the nations underground
Forbid it Lord, that I should boast Looking to my God’s right hand
Save in the death of Christ my God: When the stars begin to fall
All the great things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood. Repeat verse 1
See from His Head, His Hands, His Feet You’ll hear the sinners mourn
Sorrow and love flow mingled down; To wake the nations underground
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Looking to my God’s right hand
Or thorns compose so rich a crown? When the stars begin to fall
Were the whole realm of nature mine, Repeat verse 1
That were a present far too small:
Love so amazing, so divine, 34. NANT-Y-MYNYDD

Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! O Mary, don’t you weep, don’t you mourn,
Not even you, oh princess Pharaoh’s army got drownded,
Watching the stars above you O Mary, don’t you weep.
Trembling and hopeful
Alone within your chamber The way of evil doing is a wide and fair,
Knowing that I love you. And many, many, many they who perish there,
Pharaoh’s army got drownded,
No one shall sleep before the morning O Mary, don’t you weep.
No one shall speak or hear my name, no, no.
Only you alone will know me, There was a mighty man who came on earth to save,
Who I am and how I came. Through Him we stem the tide of tribulations wave.
Pharaoh’s army got drownded
Only a kiss can break the spell of silence, O Mary, don’t you weep.
The spell I’m under.
No one shall sleep before the morning. O Mary don’t you mourn.
No one shall speak or hear my name, no, no.
Until the dawn comes, then you’ll surely 38. PAN FO’R NOS YN HIR

With joy to thee, dearest homeland
remembered, You will make a new sensation,
Thy meadows fair answer all my weary Have a growing congregation,
yearning; Build a glowing operation here below, go, go.
My pilgrim staff I’ll lay to rest,
My vows fulfilled, my journey blest. Like a pied piper blowing
Repentance have I shown to God, Lead and keep the music flowing,
My strength through all the lands I trod; Keep the rhythm go, go, going, go, go, go.
Now penance ends, with blessing crowned:
To thee, O Lord, let praise resound, Flip your wings and fly up high,
To thee, O Lord, let praise resound. Flip your wings and fly up high,
Salvation’s grace to the penitent given Flip your wings and fly up high,
Will bring his soul with the bless’d ones to Fly, fly, fly up high.

41. SAILING I feel so broke up, I wanna go home
I am sailing, I am sailing, home again 'cross So hoist up the John B sails,
the sea. See how the main sail sets.
I am sailing stormy water to be with you, Send for the Captain ashore let me go home.
to be free, Let me go home, let me go home,
I feel so broke up, I wanna go home.
I am flying, I am flying like a bird 'cross
the sky, The Captain’s a wicked man,
I am flying, passing high clouds to be with He gets drunk whenever he can,
you, to be free. And he don’t give a damn ‘bout grandpappy and me.
I wanna go home, I wanna go home,
Can you hear me, can you hear me I feel so broke up, I wanna go home.
Through the dark night, far away?
I am dying, forever trying to be with you So hoist up the John B sails,
who can say? See how the main sail sets.
Send for the Captain ashore let me go home.
We are sailing, we are sailing home again Let me go home, let me go home,
'cross the sea. This is the worst ship, I’ve ever been on.
We are sailing stormy water to be with
you, to be free.
43. SOMEWHERE
We are sailing, we are sailing home again
'cross the sea. There’s a place for us,
We are sailing stormy water, to be with Somewhere a place for us.
you, to be free. Peace and quiet and open air,
Oh, my Lord to be with you, to be free. Wait for us, somewhere.
Oh, my Lord to be with you, to be free.
There’s a time for us.
Someday a time for us.
42. SLOOP JOHN B Time together with time to spare.
Time to learn, time to care
We sailed on the sloop John B, Someday, somewhere,
My grandpappy and me We’ll find a new way of living.
Around Nassau town we did roam.
Drinking all night, got into a fight. We’ll find a way of forgiving, somewhere.
I feel so broke up, I wanna go home. Somewhere there’s a place for us,
A time and a place for us.
So hoist up the John B sails, Hold my hand and we’re halfway there,
See how the main sail sets. Hold my hand and I’ll take you there
Send for the Captain ashore let me go Somehow, someday, somewhere.
home.
Let me go home, let me go home,
I feel so broke up, I wanna go home.
44. SOFTLY AS I LEAVE YOU Golden harps of the prophets, oh tell me
Why so silent ye hang from the willow.
Softly, I will leave you Once gain sing the songs of our homeland,
Softly, for my heart would break Sing again of the days that are past.
If you should wake, and see me go
We have drunk from the cup of affliction,
So I leave you, softly And have shed bitter tears of repentance.
Long before you miss me,
Long before your arms can beg me stay Oh, inspire us, Jehovah with courage,
For one more hour, for one more day So that we may endure to the last,
So that we may endure to the last,
After all the years So that we may endure to the last,
I can’t bear the tears to fall May endure to the last.
So softly, as I leave you there
As I leave you there
As I leave you there 47. STEAL AWAY
Steel away, steal away, steal away to Jesus!
Steel away, steal away, steal away home,
45. SOSPAN FACH I ain’t got long to stay here.
Mae bys Mari Ann wedi brifo, 1. My Lord calls me, He calls me by the thunder;
A Dafydd y gws ddim yn iach; 2. Green trees are bending, Poor sinners stand
Mae’r baban yn y crud yn crio, trembling;
A’r gath wedi scrapo Johnny bach! 3. My Lord calls me, He calls me by the lightning;
4. Tombstones are bursting, Poor sinners stand
Sospan fach yn berwi ar y tan, trembling;
Sospan fawr yn berwi ar y llawr,
A’r gath wedi scrapo Johnny bach! The trumpet sounds within my soul :
I ain’t got long to stay here.
Dai bach yn soldiwr
Dai bach yn soldiwr
Dai bach yn soldiwr 48. TAKE ME HOME
Ai gwt’i grys e’mas
I remember the face of my father
As we walked back home from the mine.
46. SPEED YOUR JOURNEY He’d laugh and he’d say that’s one more day
And its good to feel the sunshine.
Speed your journey my thoughts and my
longings, I remember my mother was smiling
Speed your journey to mountain and valley, As I set out to make my own way.
Where the sweet scented air breathes a She seemed to know that I had to go
fragrance But I’d come back home one day.
O’er the homes that we knew long ago.
Take me home to my family.
To the waters of Jordan bear greeting, Take me home to my friends.
To the downfallen temples of Zion. Take me home where my heart lies
Oh, my country so fair and so wretched, And let me, let me, let me sing again.
Oh remembrance of joy and of woe.
How the years have rolled by around me,
I’ve seen the sunshine and rain.
It’s been so long since I heard that song 51. THE ROSE
And I dream of home once again.
49. THE FIELDS OF ATHENRY Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
By a lonely prison wall, Some say love, it is a razor
I heard a young girl call: That leaves your soul to bleed.
"Michael, they have taken you away, Some say love, it is a hunger,
For you stole Trevelyn's corn, An endless aching need.
So the young might see the morn. I say love, it is a flower,
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay." And you it’s only seed.
Refrain: It’s the heart, afraid of breaking,
Low lie the fields of Athenry That never learns to dance.
Where once we watched the small free It’s the dream, afraid of waking,
birds fly That never takes a chance.
Our love was on the wing It’s the one who won’t be taken,
We had dreams and songs to sing Who cannot seem to give.
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry. And the soul, afraid of dying,
That never learns to live
By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man call When the night has been too lonely,
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free And the road has been too long,
Against the famine and the crown, And you think that love is only
I rebelled, they cut me down. For the lucky and the strong,
Now you must raise our child with dignity." Just remember, in the winter,
Far beneath the winter’s snow,
Refrain: Lies the seed, that with the sun’s love,
In the spring becomes The Rose.
By a lonely harbor wall,
She watched the last star fall
52. THE SONG OF THE JOLLY ROGER
As the prison ship sailed out against the
sky
Up with the Jolly Roger boys, and off we go to sea
For she lived to hope and pray
There’s heaps of fun when the Jolly Roger’s hung
For her love in Botany Bay
And the wind is on the lee, and the wind is on the lee.
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
Blow high, blow low, it’s off to sea we go,
Without a single light, in the pale moonlight,
Refrain:
Us bold buccaneers will go.
50. THE OLD WOMAN
Up with the Jolly Roger boys, and fling it to the
breeze.
As white candle in a holy place
Get gun and cutlass well in trim, for a treasure ship to
So is the beauty of an aged face
seize.
As the spent radiance of the winter sun
Yo ho! Yo ho! Yo ho! It’s out to sea we go,
So is a woman with her travail done.
For a ship from Spain, we’re off across the Main,
Her brood gone from her and her thoughts
Like bold buccaneers, yo ho!
as still
As the water, under a ruined mill.
Sea dogs of old, sea dogs of old, O, cadw ni rhag dyfod oes
They chas'd the beggars across the sea, Heb goron ddrain na chur na chroes.
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, he, Amen! Amen! Amen! Amen!
And made them pay their toll,
Or down to the bottom of the sea they go,
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho! 54. UNCHAINED MELODY
Welshmen, welshmen, never, never, fear’d
the foe! Oh, my love, my darling
I’ve hungered for your touch
Here’s to each man, each man of the jolly, A long, lonely time
jolly crew, Time goes by so slowly
Who sail’d the deep blue sea, And time can do so much
Who sail’d the deep blue sea, Are you still mine?
Who sail’d the deep blue sea;
I need your love, I need your love
With the Jolly, Jolly Roger flying bold and God speed your love to me
free,
And a prize on the Spanish Main may be, Lonely rivers flow to the sea, to the sea
And then home we come, yo ho, yo ho, To the open arms of the sea
And the girls will be awaiting on the quay, I Lonely rivers sigh, wait for me, wait for me
know, I’ll be coming home, wait for me
For the man who sail’d the Main, Repeat verse 1
For the man who sail’d the Main,
Yo ho, Yo ho, Yo ho, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, 55. WELSH TRILOGY PART 1: Cylch o Emyn –

I can fly higher than an eagle, And let it be heard, Alleluia.

Utter it even unto the ends of the earth.
The Lord has delivered his people. Alleluia. So many nights I’d sit by my window
The Lord has delivered his people. Alleluia. Waiting for someone to sing me her song.
Alleluia. So many dreams I’d keep deep inside me,
O be joyful in God all ye lands. Alone in the dark but now you’ve come along.
O sing praises to the honour of His name,
Make His praise to be glorious. And you light up my life,
You give me hope, to carry on;
You light up my days and fill my nights with You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
song. You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
Rolling at sea, adrift on the waters; You raise me up: To more than I can be.
Could it be finally I’m turning for home?
Finally a chance to say "Hey, I love you!" You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
Never again, to be all alone. You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
And you light up my life, You raise me up: To more than I can be.
you give me hope, to carry on;
You light up my days and fill my nights with
song.
You light up my life and give me hope to
carry on;
You light up my days and fill my nights with
song.
It can’t be wrong when it feels so right,
Cause you, you light up my life.
64. YOU RAISE ME UP
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart
burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the
silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on
mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on
mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
There is no life - no life without its
hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with
wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.
