Brief Overview
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
Troop 2
Downingtown, Pa.
Mission
It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America and Troop 2 to serve others by helping to instill
values in young people and, in other ways, to prepare them to make ethical choices throughout
their lifetime in achieving their full potential.
BSA Troop 2
Troop 2, based in Downingtown, PA, was established in 1912 and continues to be a strong and
vibrant Troop, with St. Joseph’s parish as our charter organization. The troop averages
approximately 50 scouts and 20 adult leaders.
Troop Meetings
Like all Boy Scout troops, Troop 2 attempts to be as boy-run as possible. The troop meets at
least 3 times a month on Thursday evenings at St. Joseph’s school. The scouts are divided into
Patrols, and work together as a team to earn merit badges, plan activities, and learn to contribute
to the success of the troop. The Scouts elect a Senior Patrol Leader to help guide and organize
them. Adult leaders participate as either a committee member, or as an Assistant Scoutmaster.
Weekend Camping
Troop 2 plans a weekend camping trip every month. Trips normally leave on Friday afternoon and
return on Sunday morning. The troop provides the camping gear (tents, stoves, cooking
equipment). The scouts bring their own personal gear such as a sleeping bag and mess kit. Each
patrol prepares their own meals.
Summer Camp
Each year during July or August, Troop 2 attends a weeklong BSA summer camp. These
camping trips offer a wide range of programs and activities that help scouts to earn several merit
badges and progress through the scouting ranks.
