MONTANA HIGHWAY PATROL MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Highway Patrol Division is to safeguard the lives and property of the people using the highway traffic system of Montana through education, service, and enforcement. Fellow Montanans: This year and every year, I appreciate the dedication the Montana Highway Patrol brings to assisting motorists, enforcing our traffic laws and disrupting the transportation of illegal drugs on our highways. This year, the MHP has been honored for its work as part of the Rocky Mountain Highway Patrol Network. The network received an award for "outstanding interdiction effort" at the national meeting of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The Montana Highway Patrol has been part of the network since 2005, and the network also includes the Utah Highway Patrol, Colorado State Patrol and Wyoming Highway Patrol. During 2006, the network seized thousands of pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and other drugs. Troopers also seized about $900,000 of stolen property and $1.7 million in U.S. currency. The coordinated interdiction work has broken down the fences between agencies and helps disrupt trafficking across the country. This program helps keep these drugs from ever reaching our communities, and evidence seized in the states can assist organizations and agencies working to stop drug trafficking around the region and the nation. At the same time, the Patrol remains committed to safety on Montana's highways. Early in 2007, the Patrol is assigning seven new positions to the areas with the highest fatalities. There will be two new trooper positions in the Bozeman, Kalispell and Missoula districts, and one in the Billings district. By dedicating more troopers to the areas of state that are growing so rapidly, we hope to reduce the increasing numbers of crashes in those communities. I thank the men and women of the Montana Highway Patrol for their good work. Very truly yours, MIKE McGRATH Attorney General STATE OF MONTANA DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE MONTANA HIGHWAY PATROL DIVISION 2250 Prospect PO Box 201419 Helena, MT 59620 Colonel Paul Grimstad Honorable Mike McGrath Attorney General Montana Department of Justice 215 N. Sanders Helena, MT 59620 Re: 2006 Annual Report Dear Attorney General McGrath: I respectfully submit the Montana Highway Patrol’s Annual report for the year 2006. The report is required by Montana statute and contains all reported crashes investigated by Montana Law enforcement officers. This report is a collaborative effort on the parts of many individuals and serves to assist all public, law enforcement and legislative agencies in determining areas of the state that are in need of crash reduction work. It also informs and educates those individuals whom are interested in traffic safety. We in the Montana Highway Patrol remain dedicated to our mission and take very seriously the job which we were hired to perform. Implemented in 2006 were several programs to improve traffic safety and to reduce the number of DUI, seat belt, speed related and aggressive driving crashes and fatalities. These programs included increasing the use of the helicopter and fixed wing aircraft, purchasing a mobile unit for DUI processing, securing funds from the Montana Department of Transportation to facilitate an increase in troopers on our roads and highways during peak times of travel, and increasing public awareness and education through programs such as the MHP Organ and Tissue Donation Program, and seat belt and DUI education in our local schools. The Patrol will continue to work diligently towards meeting the requirements set forth by the people of this great state. Together we can continue to make Montana a better place for us to live and travel. Respectfully, Colonel Paul K.
