Vertical Integration
William Jennings Bryan (March 19, 1860 – July 26, 1925) was an American lawyer, statesman,
and politician. He was a three-time Democratic Party nominee for President of the United States.
One of the most popular speakers in American history, he was noted for his deep, commanding
voice. Bryan was a devout Presbyterian, a strong proponent of popular democracy, an outspoken
critic of banks and railroads, a leader of the silverite movement in the 1890s, a dominant figure in
the Democratic Party, a peace advocate, a prohibitionist, an opponent of Darwinism, and one of
the most prominent leaders of Populism in late 19th- and early 20th century America. He was
called “The Great Commoner” because of his total faith in the goodness and rightness of the
common people. He was defeated by William McKinley in the intensely fought 1896 election and
1900 election, but retained control of the Democratic Party.
Bryan was one of the most energetic campaigners in American history, inventing the national
stumping tour for presidential candidates. In his three failed presidential bids, he promoted Free
Silver in 1896, anti-imperialism in 1900, and trust-busting in 1908, calling on all Democrats to
renounce states rights in cases where corporations are protected, fight the trusts and big banks,
and embrace populist ideas. President Woodrow Wilson appointed him Secretary of State in
1913, but Bryan resigned in protest against what he viewed as Wilson’s provocative language in
dealing with the Lusitania crisis in 1915. In the 1920s, he was a strong supporter of Prohibition,
but is probably best known today for his crusade against Darwinism, which culminated in the
Scopes Trial in 1925. He died five days after the case was decided.

The "Cross of Gold Speech" is William Jennings Bryan's most well-known political
speech. Recorded in 1921, the speech was originally delivered before the democratic
convention in 1896 and highlights the politician's not only populist stance, but his strong
position on the issue of the "Gold-Standard." In his strident attack on the concept that
gold was the only sound backing for currency, Jennings Bryan speaks for the "broader
class" of businessmen across the country, specifically farmers, agricultural workers,
miners and small town merchants. These workers, he argues, are all but ignored by a
government that serves the interests of big cities and large corporate enterprise. It is the
"real" businessmen of the small town and agricultural communities that inherit and
demonstrate the true "pioneer spirit" of America: "They tell us that the great cities are in
favor of the gold standard. We reply that our great cities rest upon our broad and great
prairies. Burn down your cities and leave our farms, and your cities will spring up again
as if by magic; but destroy our farms, and the grass will grow in the streets of every city
of the country." Jennings Bryan closed with the thought, "you shall not press upon the
bow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold."
This speech was profoundly effective, and though the politician was only 36 years old, he
was nominated by the delegates as their candidate for president Populists received 40
percent of the vote in the 1894 and looked forward to winning the Presidency--and the
silver standard--in 1896. That election, between Republican William McKinley and
Populist - Democrat William Jennings Bryan, Congressman from Nebraska, revolved
around the issue of gold vs. silver. During that campaign Bryan add the speech that
concluded: "You shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold." The election proved a
disaster for the Populists.
OVER THE RAINBOW
Almost all Americans are familiar with the cast of characters as originally written in
Lyman Frank Baum's 1900's tale, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz--the Tinman, the Lion, the
Scarecrow, the Witch, and the Wizard of Oz himself.
L. Frank Baum was editor of a South Dakota newspaper and he wrote the first of his Oz
series on Bryan’s second attempt in 1900.
Oz is short for ounce, the measure for gold and silver.
Dorothy, hailing from Kansas, represents the commoner.
The Tin Woodsman is the industrial worker, rusted as solid as the factories shut down in
the 1893 depression. The Scarecrow is the farmer who apparently doesn’t have the wit to
understand his situation or his political interests. The Cowardly Lion is Bryan himself;
who had a loud roar but little political power.
The Good Witches represent the magical potential of the people of the North and the
South.
After vanquishing the Wicked Witch of the East (the Eastern bankers) Dorothy frees
The Munchkins (the little people). With the witch's silver slippers (the silver standard),
Dorothy sets out on the Yellow Brick Road (the gold standard) to the Emerald City
(Washington), where they meet the Wizard (the President), who appears powerful, but is
ultimately revealed as an illusion; the real Wizard being just a little man who pulls levers
behind a curtain.
This can be interpreted in two ways: Either, the President himself is really just a little
man who pulls levers to sustain an illusion of power, or, the real power of the President
rests with the little men behind the curtains who pull the levers and create the illusion.
When the real Wizard is exposed, the now enlightened Scarecrow denounces him.
Dorothy drowns the Wicked Witch of the West (the West Coast elite); the water being
an allegory for the Midwest drought. The real Wizard flies away in a hot-air balloon,
the Scarecrow is left to govern the Emerald City, the Tin Woodsman rules the West,
and the Cowardly Lion returns to the forest where he becomes King of the Beasts after
vanquishing a giant spider which was devouring the animals in the forest. Dorothy's
silver slippers were changed to ruby in the 1939 film.
