SUMMER WORKSHOP 2011
PRINTMAKING, BOOK ARTS, DRAWING, PAINTING

COST: $1,775 (3 weeks) $1,250 (2 weeks), $650 (1 week)
Participants may choose to concentrate on one or two media or try them all.
Enrolment can be for one, two or three weeks. Numbers are limited.
The summer workshop classes are suitable for beginners to advanced students.
They are also ideal for those wishing to extend skills for professional development
Printmaking
This workshop will introduce intaglio (etching) and relief printing. Techniques will include: line, aquatint, sugar
lift, dry point, engraving, mezzotint, embossing and collagraph. Participants will design their own artists' stamps
using copper, zinc, acrylic or board plates. Multiple plate and viscosity printing will also be covered. Participants
may choose a theme or personal experience to express. Photographs or drawings may be a source of inspiration
Mixed Media Drawing
A series of exercises on paper using wet and dry media.
Collage and found objects may be included. The aim will be to produce larger works on good quality paper.
Subject matter will include the landscape, figure, still life and text.
Painting
A series of exercises will explore the use of acrylic paint on paper, board or canvas.
The techniques of brush marks, wash, solid paint and glazing will be explored.
Subject matter will include; landscape, figure, still life and text.
Participants may concentrate on the medium or media of their choice.
Book Arts
Participants will be introduced to the book arts through several binding techniques for making single and multi
section books with soft and hard covers. A variety of papers and binding styles will be used to create highly
individual books, which may be developed from other media covered in the workshop. Participants will be
able to create their own decorative papers using different surface design materials including rust, inks, paints,
dry media, shellac etc. We shall explore the sculptural properties of the book form as well as designing
journals, folios and containers for prints, drawings etc. Individual projects will be encouraged.
Wim de Vos was born in The Hague, The Netherlands in 1947 and migrated to Australia in 1959.
His study credits include diploma courses in both Commercial Illustration and Fine Art with honours in
Printmaking at the Queensland College of Art. He undertook postgraduate studies specialising in etching,
lithography and bookmaking in 1981-82 at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, The Netherlands.
Wim has exhibited regularly in Queensland, interstate and internationally since 1979. His artistic repertoire
includes printmaking, painting, sculpture and artist books. He is represented in public and private collections
in Australia, the USA, the UK and The Netherlands. Wim also teaches for the Brisbane Institute of Art and
Flying Arts Inc.
Adele Outteridge was born in Melbourne in 1946. She gained her BSc from the University of Melbourne
in 1967, then worked as an Experimental Scientist with CSIRO. She studied with the School of Colour and
Design in Sydney from 1984-88 and returned as lecturer, tutor. She taught at the Ku-Ring-Gai Art Centre from
1983-89. Adele now travels to all states and internationally lecturing and teaching.
Her work in artists' books, printmaking, sculpture and drawing has been exhibited widely, is held in private
and public collections and has appeared in books and magazines in Australia and overseas.
The Studio West End was established in 1998 It is situated in the former Peter's Ice cream Factory (now
ABSOE). There is plenty of good, reasonably priced accommodation close-by and the studio is accessible by
public transport. There are many excellent restaurants in the area and we are a short walk from the Qld. Art
Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), the State Library of Qld, the Performing Arts Centre, South Bank
Parklands and CBD. There is plenty of long day parking close by in West End.
