Overall road safety target

          1) Making Japan's roads the "safest in the world" by bringing the annual number of victims who die
          within 24 hours after a traffic accident to less than 5,500 by 2010.
          2) Reduce the annual number of victims killed and injured to less than 1 million.
             No more than 5,500 fatalities
             (8th Fundamental Traffic Safety Programs (2006 – 2010))

          The goal for Japan during 2006-2010 is to become the "Safest roads in the world" (<5500 deaths) and to
          have less than 1 million injuries and deaths.

Road safety strategy




National road safety programmes

          Fundamental Traffic Safety Programmes: Enacted Based on the Traffic Safety Policies Law. The 8th
          Program that is now in force applies from 2006 to 2010; was initiated in 1971



Designated lead agencies




          Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), National Police Agency (NPA), Cabinet
          Office, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Fire and Disaster Management
          Agency, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare,

Tasks of designated lead agencies
          * Road environment enhancements: Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT),
          National Police Agency (NPA);
