Scottish Ale
Style History
Scottish ales are uniquely different from beer produced
in England and Ireland, the distinct flavors of this ale
style can be directly tied back to the use of native
Scottish ingredients
Scottish barley and dark malts, give these beers there
traditional dark hues and smoky, roasty accents
Because the Scottish climate is not well suited for
growing hops, this style derives very little of its character
from hop bitterness.
Style Profile
Scottish Ales can range from gold amber to dark brown in
color
These ales are medium bodied, have a smooth malty sweet
flavor, a slight, but noticeable hop bitterness and often have
peaty and smoky notes
Not to be confused with Scotch ales which are strong and
warming, Scottish Ales range from 2.5 to 5.0 percent alcohol
by volume
