Report on July Lunch
In July, Daniel Robinson & Sons and Weston Business Centres together
sponsored Lunch at the Stansted Centre in Takeley for the benefit of St Clare
Hospice of Hastingwood. St Clare provides specialist palliative care services for
the population of its bailiwick, the area bounded to the North by Saffron Walden;
to the East by Great Dunmow; to the South by Loughton and Buckhurst Hill; and
to the West by the Hertfordshire town of Bishop’s Stortford.
Over 50 members heard Richard Cowie, St Clare’s Chief Executive, and Melanie
Nightingale, St Clare’s Director of Fundraising, outline the nature of St Clare’s
excellent palliative care services which help many suffering from cancer or a
number of other terminal illnesses, to live their lives to the fullest possible extent
without undue suffering and pain. They also described the extent to which St
Clare cares for, and provides bereavement counselling to the families of its
patients over the months preceding death, and the months following
bereavement.
All these services are provided free of charge by a professional team of clinical
and support staff including fundraising, shop and administrative staff, and over
500 volunteers who give their time in a wide range of activities from clinical
support to gardening. Bearing in mind that much of St Clare’s support, both in
money and in kind, comes from its bailiwick of West Essex and immediate
surrounds, it really is a wonderful example of a community working together to
provide quite remarkable care for some of its less fortunate members.

It was great to welcome almost a dozen guests who have not previously enjoyed
our hospitality and it was sad that over fifty members who had wanted to come
had had to send their apologies

A Day at the Races
I have been working with Pam Coulson of Breakfast Synergy and Barry Root of
Essex Bloodstock, on a Day at the Races in the autumn for members of
Breakfast Synergy and Stansted Lunch Club. Barry will host the day, which we
have settled for Thursday 4 October 2007 at Newmarket. We shall meet in
Newmarket at 1030 hrs for a stable visit followed by lunch at noon in a local hotel
after which we will go to the Racecourse for the racing, which begins at 1400hrs.
Full instructions will be given to those attending nearer the time.
The cost of the day will be between £50 and £60 per head, which includes all the
necessary passes, and promises to be an excellent day. My wife Jane and I will
be going.
Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to join us and in what
numbers together with a deposit of £20 per head payable to ‘The Stansted Lunch
Club’.

Thanks for Helping Zimbabwe
In the last Issue I told members of Tony Bowden’s work in the collection and
distribution of medical supplies to, and the promotion of, ‘Homes in Zimbabwe’, a
charity that provides support for Zimbabwean old peoples’ homes. Tony has had
a number of responses with gifts of medicines for which he is most grateful. I am
delighted to learn that some members listen to what I say!!
Tony is running a golf day at Stockley Park, Uxbridge on Friday 14 September
2007. It would be good if we could enter a couple of teams so please consider
entering the competition; better still enter a team. If you wish to go under the
banner of the Lunch Club so much the better. Tony is hoping for strong support
for the Charity, which is under increasing pressure as Mugabe’s regime marches
4
towards complete economic collapse. He will be delighted to hear from any
golfers wishing to participate.

Items of News / Interest – Forwarding of Emails
I receive a not insignificant number of emails that members wish forwarded to
members. Many of them I do forward generally with a brief comment by me on
why I think it may be of interest to members; many I do not forward because I do
not think they are wholly appropriate and because I am anxious to ensure that
members only receive emails that are likely to contain information of use to them.
It helps no one and defeats my purpose if I drive members to ‘email!
Having said that, I have to say that many of my forwarded emails have elicited
responses from members, which is very pleasing. I shall therefore continue to
forward those that I think may be of use, but I do reserve the right to make a
small charge for doing so, partially to discourage the irrelevant; partially because
it does take time to review emails.
If you have any items of interest or news that you would like communicated
to members, please contact me.
