Stephen Luff was baptised at St Andrew’s Church, Farnham, on 25th December 1789.
Stephen married Sarah Stanton on 12 th March 1817, Sarah died on 9th December 1819,
there were no children.
Stephen remarried. His new wife was Sarah Ambridge. They were married at
St James’, Westminster on 8 th September 1822. They had 3 children, only one, William,
lived to adulthood.

At the time of the 1841 census Stephen, with his wife Sarah and son William ( then aged
15) were living in St Peter Port, Guernsey. It seems that Stephen’s younger brother
Richard was living in Guernsey, and Stephen and his family followed him.
The 1851 census has Stephen employed as a gardener, aged 61 with Sarah aged 50. They
were living at No2 St Thomas Villaje, St Peter Port.
Sarah died on 19th November 1854. The 1861 shows Stephen living with his son William and
family at 19, Victoria Road, St Peter Port. Stephen died on 21st May 1867.

William Luff was born in England on 5th December 1825.
He emigrated with his mother and father to St Peter Port, Guernsey, sometime before
1841. William’s occupation was a wood carver.
William married Susannah Gosling ( also known as Susan Sarah ) circa 1848.
At the time of the 1851 census William and Susannah had 2 children.

By this time William ran a very successful business as a wood carver and cabinet
maker. He was mainly known for his woodcarving, and worked on the restoration of
Grinling Gibbons’ work in the Mansion House and St Paul’s, in London. Like
Gibbons, he was expert in the carving of fruit and flowers.

The 1871 census shows William as employing 6 men and 3 boys in his business. Also
the family had increased to 10 children, and the family was living at 12, Mandell Street,
St Peter Port.
