ANIMAL MOVEMENTS
Bernard Wooding Report on proposed animal movement
I would like to suggest that the following animals be moved in 2009. All animals have been
assessed with the movement protocol questions, and the properties left with a decent breeding
herd on them. THE PROPORTY OWNERS HAVE NOT YET BEEN CONTACTED FOR COMMENT.
Please read and send comments back to me so that a final list can be drawn up and distributed.
Nine properties are involved and 29 animals are earmarked for capture and this may take a lot
of co ordination but all movements are interconnected.

Capture attempts in 2009
Murray Boustred from Remhoogte near Stellenbosch enquired about purchasing two mares
that were available from Wederwill. This capture was complicated by the fact that two of the
Wederwill mares (Ashley and Nina) had young foals at foot and the other female (Zephyr) was
heavily pregnant. Ashley’s foal was too young to be separated so we left her. Nina was captured
by myself and moved to Remhoogte moved leaving her foal. Zephyr foaled a few days after
moving Nina so the correct decision was made. A second visit to capture Ashley some time later
was unsuccessful. A planned visit to go again was not possible due to a film shoot and another
visit last week was not possible due to Linda at Wederwill and Bernard being on leave.
Murray is still in need of anther mare so we will attempt to capture Ashley whose foal is now old
enough in the middle of July. I have told Murray we will invoice him for both animals after
Ashley is delivered.
Proposals for future captures
In previous years Kimberley based Wild Life Translocation Services made visits to Elandsberg
farm with their capture team and helicopter where they did work for Mike Gregor.
With the team being in the Western Cape it was cost effective for them to complete the
capture requirements of the Quagga project even if it entailed a few or even single animals from
each venue.
There are presently only 12 animals for sale at different destinations . The sale of these
animals could be used to finance the captures for the purposes of the breeding project.
However the capture costs could eat up any profit from the sale of the animals . If possible we
want to maintain a sustainable situation where sale of animals finances capture and relocation
4
costs within the project .Capturing one or two animals from each venue has proven to be
very time consuming when done from the ground and is often not practically possible at all.
Using a helicopter gets the job done quickly but is expensive especially if it entails one or two
animals from each venue. Helicopter time is needed to fly from one venue to another and
transport vehicles have to be on standby which then take time to deliver the one or two animals
to the delivery venue. The helicopter is idle in this time. This makes the overall capture
cost exorbitant.
I am prepared to give my free time to co ordinate the captures however volunteering my
professional time to capture all the animals is not possible due to the time taken to expedite
these operations.. I will ensure a vet is present supervising at all captures and acceptable
trailers are used for transport.
We have GPS co ordinates for most of the venues where animals have to be caught and I believe
we should put the capture out to tender to the capture organizations to identify what money we
are talking about. Even if we do not accept a tender it will at least give the project some idea of
what it entails. If it is exorbitant it might be worthwhile to wait until a capture team with a
helicopter is in the area for the next Elandsberg capture in which case it would be worth their
while to clean up the work for the project and we would be in a position to compare what sort
of a deal we are getting.
An alternative is for us to make use of all the resources we have as in the SANParks transport
vehicle, and the use of SANParks chopper (on a rental basis). To use these options might bring
down the overall capture cost and then pay a professional an hourly rate to complete the
capture. At least if it has been put out to tender we again have some sort of baseline to work
from to identify if this makes sense.
In the short term Steven Mitchell has buyers for animals . He has agreed to have a vet present
at all captures and I will inspect his trailer this week. Steven has been very helpful in assisting
with the quagga operations.
I am very busy with Back to Africa relocations at present so my apologies for not being present
at the meetings.
Best wishes,
Hamish Currie
