From my wife Sarah: I have never understood the criticism of this movie.
I've watched it many times and I find it to be extremely entertaining. It has
all the elements of a good story and a good scifi. It has a great premise,
well developed characters, strong relationships some of which develop
over the course of the story, life threatening bad guys and difficult
circumstances that even seem impossible to overcome, bravery, sacrifice,
an entirely new culture with it's own laws and customs, along with amazing
sets, costumes, and special effects.
Set in the future, after the face of the earth has been covered by water, the
story starts when Costner's character, the Mariner, comes into a small man
made atoll to trade. He has something very valuable, rare and hard to
come by in this world - dirt. They discover that he is different - a human
with gills and webbed toes. The people feel he's a threat, and with even
bigger threats than him looming, the action begins. Kevin Costner does an
excellent job at playing the main character, who is a hardened and even
heartless loner. Jeanne Tripplehorn is outstanding as a woman having to
rely on the Mariner for her survival and her adopted childs' survival. She's
on a quest for dry land, and believes he can take her there despite the fact
that he's a threat to her and her child. Dennis Hopper is excellent in the
villain role.
Okay, there are a couple of small things that were not quite believable, but
for me it only caused a very slight, passing thought that I quickly set aside
because the movie was really entertaining. There was so much that was
right about this movie that I had no interest in focusing on what was wrong.
Simply, it's a great story, and it's a great scifi. If you haven't seen it, I really
recommend it.
