PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the City of Palm Coast recognizes the value of preserving the City of Palm Coast’s
unique natural lands and its rare species, and native plant communities and wildlife for this
generation and future generations; and
Whereas, the City of Palm Coast commits to providing a high quality of life which includes
respecting and protecting the natural environment; and
Whereas, invasive non-native plants and animals negatively impact native plants, animals, and
local agricultural and ecotourism industries by displacing native plant communities, altering
hydrologic regimes and the functions of wetlands and waterways, and degrading habitat for native
wildlife and the appearance and enjoyment of natural landscapes; and
Whereas, the annual cost of invasive non-native species to the United States economy is an
estimated $120 billion per year, and the annual cost of impacts and control efforts are estimated at
equaling 5% of the world’s economy; and
Whereas, Florida public agencies spend more than $102 million each year on managing invasive
species; and
Whereas, the City of Palm Coast recognizes that invasive species pose a potential threat to the
preservation of the native ecology of the region.
Whereas, the City of Palm Coast has developed educational programs to heighten invasive
species awareness that includes Drawing the LINE (Long Creek Invasive for Natives
Exchange) and Air Potato Round-up.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the City Council of the City of Palm Coast does
hereby proclaim the first week of March 2011:
NATIONAL INVASIVE SPECIES AWARENESS WEEK
ADOPTED this 1st day of March 2011.
