The Sentence.

Objectives

 To enable the students to define a sentence.

 Enable them to write correct a sentence.

 To enable them to define:

 Parts of the sentence.

 Kinds of the sentence.

 Phrase and clause.

 Exercise.

The Sentence.



A sentence is a group of words which

makes complete sense.

When we write a sentence, we must

remember three things:-



 The words must be placed in their proper order to

make complete sense.



 A sentence always begins with a capital letter.



 A sentence must end with a full stop (.) and it is a

question then with a question mark (?).

Re write the following words in their proper

order so that they make a sense.



 House is big that.

 A song sings she.

 Ten is john years old.

 A poem reads he.

 Walk go out I for a.

 Table a made of wood is.

 A story reads marry.

 The east rises in the sun.

 Sachin the best player is.

 For health good is milk.

 The sky twinkle stars in.

 Is the Delhi India of capital.

 Seven there are in a week days.

 Park are playing the children in.

 Plays football he.

 The dog cat the ran after.

Two parts of a sentence.

Every sentence has two parts.



1. The person or

thing we are 1. The Subject.

talking about.







2. What we say about

2. The Predicate

the person or

thing.

Read these sentences.

The person or thing spoken What is said about the person

about. (Subject). or thing. (Predicate).



 The girl  isdancing.

 The cow  Eats grass.



 The birds  Are flying.



 The hen  Has three chickens.



 A cock  Tells the time.

Kinds of the sentence.

Sentences are of four kinds.



 Declarative sentence or Assertive

sentence.

 Interrogative sentence.

 Imparative sentence.

 Exclamatory sentence.

A declarative or assertive

sentence.

A sentence that makes a statement or

assertion is called a declarative or

assertive sentence.

As:-



I live in Delhi.

Interrogative sentence.



A sentence that asks a question is

called an interrogative sentence.

As:-





Where do you live?

Imperative sentence.



A sentence that expresses a command, or

an entreaty is called an imperative

sentence.

As:-

Be quiet.

Exclamatory sentence.



A sentence that expresses strong feeling

is called an exclamatory sentence.

As:-



How very cold the night is!



What a shame!

The Phrase and The Clause.

 The Phrase:-

 A group of words, which makes sense, but not

complete sense, is called a Phrase.

 As:-

a. The sun rises in the east.

b. Jack and Jill went up the hill.

c. There came a giant to my door.

d. The tops of the mountains were

covered with snow.

e. Show me how to do it.

 Clause:-

 A group of words, which contains a subject and a

predicate is called a clause.

 As:-



a. He has a chain which is made of

gold.

b. People who pay their debts are

trusted.

c. We cannot start while it is raining.

d. I think that you have made a mistake.

Exercise

Answer the following questions.

 Which are the points to be remembered while writing a

correct sentence?



 Define the parts of the sentence with appropriate

examples.



 Name the kinds of the sentence and define them giving

examples.



 Define the phrase giving two examples.



 Define the clause giving three examples.
