FLOWERS AND BUTTERFLY MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE

Hello everyone. I will need to be out of school for about a week or so to be with my family and take care of funeral

arrangements for my mother. I trust you ALL will be great for the substitute(s), you will work on your projects and

clean up properly daily. Projects will get fired and returned to you to be glazed. All projects must remain here so I can

enter grades when I return. The projects may be stored in the Library “kitchen”- be sure your name is on the project!

 Remember daily to store your projects properly

 Clean materials you used and return to the proper places

You will use clay to create a flower and butterfly body – they will be fired and wire forms with tissue paper will be added

to create wings.

House keeping rules for clay – VERY IMPORTANT ALL STUDENTS FOLLOW THESE DIRECTIONS

1 Always work on a fabric mat – Stored on or near the slab roller in the back of the room

2 Tools are by the sink always return clean:

3 slip cups and water and sponge cups 1-2 per table

4 Always wipe down table at the end of class

5 Store projects in plastic bags in lower far right cabinet near sink

Project Procedure:

1 Students will be provided a variety of silk flowers as samples to look at (in the storage room – top shelf in a box)

and the images on this handout

2 Each student will receive a ball of clay about 1 lb (no more than what a pound of butter size– they may help

themselves to the clay from the bin. Wedge the clay – knead the clay as shown on the poster in the back right

corner of the room on a fabric mat

3 IMPORTANT: I recommend daisy/sunflower type flowers. The completed flower should be no smaller than 6”

across for a daisy or sunflower. Cut the clay in half and form the basic flower(s) shape from one piece of clay.

additional pieces need to be scored and slip must be added to the piece to the flower(s) – only the center and

pedals of the flower need to be formed the clay is not strong enough to be used for the stem. ACCURATE

DETAILS like leaves, AND wrinkles in pedals . TEXTURES are important – texture of the flower center and pedals.

At the end of the class period the projects will need to be stored in Plastic Bags and stored in the lower right side

cabinet near the sink. Avoid flat looking flowers that look as if they are cookies cut from dough.

4 The forming of the flowers will likely take 3-4 days if done right and not rushed. Once completed, the students

must carve their name on the bottom and they may be left in the kiln room to dry and be fired.

5 The body of a butterfly must be made too. But that is quite simple. Make it about 3” and out of one piece of clay

- head, center of body and tail section – add an incised line on each side of the body to glue on the wing. Store

butterfly body and flower together so not to get mixed up with other classmates

6 The Flowers and butterfly bodies will be fired the flowers will be painted with acrylic paint and varnished.

PAINTING THE FLOWERS

1. Acrylic paint is in the storage room – please use ONLY WHAT YOU NEED. You can always get more but if you

have too much on your palette at the end of class it is a waste. Your goal is to make the flower and looks as

realistic as possible. Use the silk flowers as reference but I do not expect all the flowers to be yellow and orange

a. Acrylic paint STAINS be very careful- use the phone book pages as deposable palettes.

b. Brushes are by the sink – MOST IMPORTANT- WASH THEM BEFORE AND AFTER YOU USE!!!

c. Choose a color that is natural for a flower AVOID USING COLORS STRAIGHT OUT OF THE TUBE…When

you mix a color make enough to paint the entire flower – remember that a little acrylic paint goes a long

way.

d. Once you mix the color of your choice then use a little black *shades* and white to add high lights

*tints* to make the flower look realistic.

e. You can always go back and repaint areas that are not to your satisfaction.

Butterfly Wings

1 The body of the butterflies will also be fired and the wings will need to be created. Wings will be collaged from

pieces of magazines.

2 Using the same size wings from the watercolor assignment, or another set they find and print from the internet,

the students are to cut out two wings from heavy weight paper. ( in the storage room in the paper shelf)

3 A basic outline of the design is drawn on the paper

4 Options for Wings

a. Using magazines the students will cut out pieces of color and words from magazines and glue down –

both sides and ink will be used to create the black areas of the wings

b. Using tissue paper and glue tear small bits of tissue paper and glue to create colorful wings. Then with

the black ink create the black patterns of the butterfly wing.

5 Attached with hot glue to the body of the butterfly. Once complete the wings will be varnished –done when I

return.

a. Hot glue guns are in the storage room with glue sticks- if you run out Mr.Vince can get more for you.

6 Once the Butterfly is complete it will be suspended from the flower with a heavy wire so it appears to float

around the flower- heavy wire in the storage room on right side

7 Below are some examples of sunflowers and butterflies.

Next lesson: Coil Pottery

Objective: to introduce the basics of clay coil building. – create a small vase using coils . Handouts should be provided.

Handout will be provided in class and uploaded to the web site

The vase should stand about 6” tall when completed.

Mr. Vince or Ms McGann will assist at getting this lesson started.

Choice Project

Due by Oct 14

1. MOST CHALLANGING CHOICE: sculptural “story frame” – a slightly thicker slab (using number 3 slab sticks) that

has added sculptural and molded elements on the frame to create a themed frame. The outside size is about 8 x

10 and the image area is about 5 x 7. The most difficult of this assignment is keeping the frame from warping or

cracking.

2. A series of small animals is progression of movement. IE. The flight of a bird from standing to full flight.

Remember no area should be more than 1” thick without a “air hole” drilled in while the clay is still damp

3. A coil bottle/Vase about 7” tall.

4. Pyramid box

It is not unusual for group to be working on many things any one day. Some students will be working on the previous

project other will be on the next project and still others will be glazing bisqueware.

Pottery 1

Due by Nov 11

FINAL EXAM PROJECT 200 POINTS Tea Pot and cups and saucers or Tea Pot and serving tray

Greenware due: Nov 4

See handout for an idea of how to create the tea pot. Handout will be provided in class and uploaded to the web site

The students must research an idea for the tea pot by going to Google images and looking up tea pot designs. They are

to find one they really like and print it. Most traditional tea pots can be created by using the double pinch pot method as

shown in the handout.

 When glazing use three even coats and recap the glaze properly and return to correct shelf

 All greenware is due by Nov 9th

 All glazeware is due by Nov 18th

Complete all glaze ware from the first 9 weeks then start the following project

Bird House –

1. look at designs for bird houses and come up with your own design for a bird house. The design must be done in

the sketch book.

2. Add measurements and then create templates from the yellow “bogus” paper to be used to cut the slabs. (on

my desk – more in the storage room)

3. The house must be functional and no smaller than 5 x 7 . It must have a small hole for the bird to enter ( not too

large so a squirrel can enter.

4. Part or one side of the roof must be able to come off but be designed in such a way that it stays on when

necessary.

5. It must be well constructed with excellent craftsmanship

1. A very large project –18” or more tall and no thinner than 5 inches.

2. A set of 6-8 functional table ware pieces (plates, bowls, or mugs) or grandmother clock that sits on a table

Kaitlyn and Chelsea will either load the kiln or supervise when the kiln is being loaded. Ms McGann will fire the kiln

when loaded but you need to tell her when it is ready. DO NOT UNLOAD THE KILN UNLESS IT’S UNDER 200’

Advanced Art –

Perspective assignment from observation.

The drawing should be completed in black line and have some shading in crosshatching or vertical line. The perspective

is normally reintroduced with some guided practice helping them remember the key points of perspective: vanishing

point, guide lines, horizon line.

Extended Study Assignment The perspective must be two point perspective.

Objectives: They are to draw an angle from the classroom showing a foreground, middle ground and background. For

example, sit near the black cabinets looking down the counter of the sink and cabinets. Or Sit at the corner of table and

draw several table and chairs accurately. The assignment must be accurate showing a variety of details. Once the pencil

drawing is drawn then they must go back with a fine marker and line all pencil lines. They also must show some shading

using cross hatching, vertical lines or pointillism.

Objective:

Students will create two extended linear line drawings. Students should focus on perspective and depth in their compositions.

Each student will be expected to complete one drawing in charcoal and one in paint.

You should begin by finding an interesting and complex area in the classroom. Build a foundation for your drawing with straight

lines that build a framework for your final piece. The final work should allow the lines to breathe. Both works must incorporate

the lines. If you choose to complete a third drawing, the lines are optional.

Next Assignment: Self Portraiture or Observational Perspective in a Color medium – choose one!

EXPRESSIVE SELF PORTRAIT from a photograph. This will require them to photograph themselves creating a

visable expression. IT IS IMPORTANT TO Look on the college board web site for ideas

It may be WILD or sullen. But expression is mandatory. The colors may be realistic or expressive but the subject must be

rendered with realism.

OBSERVATIONAL PERSPECTIVE may be an interior or exterior and may be from a photograph or from life. It

is important to remember that if drawing from a photograph may be slightly easier and you will have more choices of

subject matter. It is essential that in either project accurately is vital.

The colors may be realistic or expressive but the subject must be rendered with realism showing perspective. The

examples are from a College freshman Drawing Class

See examples below:

Perspective

Objective: to accurately complete several one point perspective sketches and one, one point

perspective rendering

Overview: After reviewing the principles of perspective, guided practice, and independent practice of

perspective students are to accurately render several one-point perspective drawings from photos and

life.

Project Specifics

1. Introduce one and two point perspective through basic models by guided practice

2. Students are to do some independent practice. Students are to find several photos in magazines

that show one point perspective and find the vanishing point and guide lines.

3. Students are to then go into the hallways to observe and render real life one point perspective.

First, draw several very very quick thumbnail sketches. Then choose one to carefully render.

4. Finished rendering should be accurate and have major architectural points: for example,

doorways, floor and ceiling tiles, and large furniture….

5. Project: Find a photo that clearly shows one or two point perspective. Accurately render the

photo. You may leave out some details as long as the basics are shown with some details.

Completed image must be colored with color pencil and or markers. Finished project must be

matted and the reference photo must be attached to the back or the front of the matt board.
