GREAT
WESTERN
GLADIOLUS
2012
Catalogue
1
Welcome to the new GWG catalogue where I hope you’ll find
plenty of gladiolus corms to meet all your needs for the 2012
season.
For those of you who are past customers and haven’t yet
heard, I am sure you will be sad to learn that my husband John
passed away just after last year’s catalogue went out. He was
keen that the business should carry on and with the help of
very good friends and family, that is what I am doing.
You will see that there are not many new Dutch varieties listed
here this year as I have to ‘learn the ropes’ as far as that side of
the business is concerned. You will also notice that Beauty of
Holland and Lowland Queen are not listed. I am sorry to say
that these have been with-drawn from cultivation by my
supplier but I am sure you will find others to take their place on
the show bench and in your gardens. Sadly the prices are
slightly higher this year due to increased transport charges
from abroad but I think they are still very good value for
money.
It has been a pleasure to hear from many of you about your
successes this year both at shows and other events. Do keep
this up and also let me know if there were any big
disappointments - it can only be good for everyone if you think
there is something I should change.
Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any queries
and I’ll try to answer them or pass you on to someone else who
can. In the meantime, have a good look through the catalogue
and enjoy planning for next year.
I look forward to supplying you with plenty of colour for the
coming season.
Gill Hazell

How to read the catalogue listings.
The name of the variety is preceded by a three figure number and then
one or more letters. These refer to the classification (size of floret and
colour) and to the flowering time.
For example: 454 M ‘RED HOT’ (Bloggs 1999) 8;23;30.
The 4 means that the flower is 400 size (large flowered:4.5 inches plus
across bottom floret) and the 54 means that it is red (54 is medium
red). The M means that it flowers mid-season.
First digit = 5: 500 size (giant-flowered: 5.5 inches plus across)
First digit = 4: 400 size (large-flowered: 4.5 inches plus across)
First digit = 3: 300 size (medium-flowered: 3.5 inches plus across)
First digit = 2: 200 size (small-flowered: 2.5 inches plus across)
First digit = 1: 100 size (miniature-flowered: under 2.5 inches across)
The other two digits refer to the colour and shade as in the table below:
COLOUR PALE LIGHT MED DEEP OTHER
White 00
Green 02 04
Yellow 10 12 14 16
Orange 20 22 24 26
Salmon 30 32 34 36
Pink 40 42 44 46
Red 52 54 56 58 (Black-red)
Rose 60 62 64 66 68 (Black-rose)
Lavender 70 72 74 76 78 (Purple)
Violet 80 82 84 86
Tan 90
Smokey 92 94 96 98 (Brown)
rd
An ODD number as 3 digit = conspicuous mark or colour contrast.
EXAMPLES: 354 = medium-sized medium red. 501 = giant-sized white with a
blotch or mark of some kind.
E = early M = mid-season L = late.
After the name of the variety is the breeder’s name and year of intro-
duction, and three numbers (e.g. 8;23;30) which refer to the number of
florets which will stay open together (8), the number of buds (23) and
the length of the flower spike in inches (30). This information is only
given for exhibition varieties. 3
DUTCH CORMS for Local Shows & Gardens
GIANT FLOWERED GLADIOLI
These corms make very big plants with flowers that are at least 5.5
inches (14-15 cms) across. They are very popular for backs of
borders, displays in hotels and churches and for that special func-
tion as well as for exhibition work.
500’s - Giant Flowered (Dutch)
These are reasonably priced gladiolus with fairly smooth petals.
They usually flower fairly early so if you need some for early shows
then try ‘Amsterdam’ or ‘Oasis’ which, if planted in late April, will
generally flower from early August onwards.
Price per single variety: £1.75 for 5, £2.75 for 10, £5.00 for 20.

displays in stately homes. 400’s - Large Flowered (Dutch)
Although being popular as cut flowers, unless you want to fill a
considerable space we would recommend the 300 and 200 sizes for

shows though it is not only local shows that feature these Dutch

TERMS OF BUSINESS
How to Order
Simply fill in the order form that comes with the catalogue and send
it to us with your cheque, postal order or international money
order in pounds sterling, made out to ‘G.F.Hazell’. Unless you are
a UK customer ordering only special orders, you will need to add
post and packing charges as outlined below. If you lose the form,
simply send us the order in a letter or on a sheet of paper, but
PLEASE make sure that we can read it by PRINTING clearly
(especially if your writing is like mine!). Take care to include your
name and full address and most importantly, do please include
your postcode and phone number. We can arrange for collections
to be mostly early or late flowering etc. Special collections for
special occasions e.g. weddings are arranged without difficulty.
Orders are dealt with in rotation. Most orders are received well be-
fore Christmas, but are accepted until the end of April. If you re-
quire confirmation of your order, please enclose a stamped,
addressed envelope.
If you feel that your order is late arriving, please phone to find out
about it, but before doing so, please read carefully the comments
about despatch times - see page 20.
Postage and Packing
The following charges should be added to orders (unless defined as
post free) after any discounts or vouchers have been deducted.
Postage is not discountable. In an effort to avoid penalising those
who order mostly or all smaller (and thus lighter) corms, the follow-
ing charges have been devised, which should hopefully be fairer
than just charging the same rate for any size of corms.
1. For orders for all or mostly big corms (500/400/300 sizes)
UK orders: Up to 20 corms £4.00, 21-30 corms £5.50, 31-50
corms £7.50, 51-100 corms £8.00, 101-150 corms £8.50, 151
corms or more £9.50.
2. For UK orders where at least 60% of the order is for 200’s,
prims or nanus, : up to 20 corms £3.00, 21-30 corms £4.00, 31-
50 corms £5.00, 51-100 corms £6.00, 101-150 corms £7.00, 151
or more corms £8.00 maximum charge. 18
Please note that special offers are not post free to European
countries. Outside of Europe please contact us before order-
ing. A few countries will not allow us to export anything. Only
UK orders over £150.00 are post free.
Eire and rest of Europe postage will be charged at cost. Please
contact us for prices.
3. Wholesale orders: rates are negotiated per order.
Customised secure delivery arrangements may be available for
some customers in some counties in England and Wales. We
will notify you if this is the case.
Where possible, it may save you money to order with a friend.
CORM SIZE - measurement is circumference of corms in cms.
All bought corms are the best available in that year from the
growers. We never deliberately buy smaller sizes to save money.
Usually Dutch 400/500s are 14+ (ie. over 14cms). 300s will be
12/14s and occasionally new introductions may even go down to
10/12s if there is not enough stock of the bigger ones. Dutch 200s
and nanus are usually 8/10s. Imported stock from North America etc
is always ordered in the biggest size available, but we will
sometimes receive a smaller size than ordered. We usually grow on
small stock for another year rather than sending it out to customers.
Home grown corms of varieties from these countries and all our UK
varieties are as big as we can grow them in that year. Some corms
may have their outer skins completely removed, because Great
Western imported stock is DEFRA inspected.
Corms from this catalogue are sold at reasonable prices and on the
strict understanding that they are not for resale to third parties
without our prior consent. Nurseries, stately homes, local authorities
and the like, can of course order at agreed preferential rates.
19
WARRANTY
We guarantee that the goods you receive will be in excellent condition
on leaving us. If you experience any problems during growth, you
should inform us immediately, not in a year’s time and if we deem the
stock to have been faulty, we will replace, substitute or credit your
order. We will not guarantee the goods against things outside our
control such as pest damage, weather or poor cultivation. We will not
refund for non-delivery when the customer’s absence from Britain
without telling us is the cause of that non-delivery. Please let us know if
you are moving house or if you will be on holiday in March, April or
May. We get very few complaints but will always act upon any
comment or problem.
DESPATCH TIMES
Delivery will be from Feb/March (Dutch corms) or April (orders
which are, or include non-Dutch corms). Due to circumstances be-
yond our control we cannot deliver imported non-Dutch stock
before April. Please enquire if necessary. If you require a par-
ticular delivery date or early delivery of part or all of your order,
please phone to discuss.
MINIMUM ORDER SIZE
There is no minimum order size provided p&p are met.
SUBSTITUTES
We may have to substitute if a variety (cultivar) does not harvest
well or if imported corms fail to arrive or are too small. In some
years we have a number of substitutes sent from our different sup-
pliers for various reasons. Demand may exceed supply, especially
in the case of North American gladioli which were show winners in
the previous year etc. If you do not want substitutes, please
mark this clearly on your order form.
PAYMENT
Payment is due at the time of order (NB. Cheques etc. should be
made payable to ‘G.F.Hazell’) unless prior arrangement has been
made. We regret that we are unable to accept payment by card or
online as our policy is to keep prices reasonable and this would add
to costs. 20
We would like to thank all our customers for their
continued support

Classic, Rare and Unusual Bulbs

IMPORTANT!
Immediately on receiving your parcel please open
and unpack it. Strip off the outer skin and space the
corms out with the buds uppermost. Put them in a
clean container such as a seed tray, without any
sand or compost under them, and store them
uncovered in a cool, dry, frost-free place. Leave
them there until you want to break their dormancy
as described below.
All corms should be prepared before planting as
many will still be dormant when received. The
process is similar to chitting potatoes. Peel the
outside skin from the corms and stand them some-
where light and warm indoors, e.g. a sunny window-
sill. Do not stand them in sand, peat or soil. After a
week or two, one or more shoots will emerge
around the edge of the basal plate on the bottom of
the corm. The corm has now broken dormancy and
will grow away successfully. Planting dormant, un-
peeled corms may lead to poor, late, or no growth,
as will repeated plantings on the same ground and
not lifting corms for winter storage.
For best results and exhibition purposes and also
for corms that you have stored through the winter,
more detailed procedures are necessary.
