Knolls Estates Newsletter for August
I must start my letter this month with a warning to all of you that walk or have small pets. It has been
reported to me 3 times this month of a cougar sighting very close to homes. These sightings are as close
as one’s back patio and on the 13th fairway that is the par 3 along Scardi Blvd. This animal, even though
it will probably not attack, is dangerous and we need to be vigil when we are outside. If I hear of many
more sightings I will report it to the Wildlife authorities to do something. Please keep me posted.
Solicitors have been reported again and I want to remind homeowners that it is illegal to do so in Knolls
Estates. A couple of people have reported someone knocking on the door and wanted to clean their
carpeting at that moment. When questioned they wanted to enter in order to give an estimate of time
and cost. PLEASE, do not let these people in. They must be told to leave the area as there is a “No
Solicitations Law” within the neighborhood. In some cases, I would suggest that you tell them that you
are going to call the police, in order to get them to leave.
Street repair was done in phase I on Monday Aug 29th. The next step is to seal the streets and then
stripe them in that order. This should be completed in September. Another case of your dollars at
work.
A year end general meeting for all homeowners will be scheduled for October. The date is October
22nd at the Sutherlin High School at 10:00AM. I encourage everyone to attend, as it will be an
important meeting regarding the future of our CC&R’s. The board will present some suggested changes
that this will require a vote of the homeowners.
The common areas that have been leveled this past month will be over seeded in October sometime.
$’s at work again.
2 homes have sold this past month. The home at 2084 Culver Loop with the terrible looking yard that
has been empty for over a year was sold as well as the house at 1945 Kapella Ct. This home has been
vacant for over a year also. Let’s welcome our new neighbors when they arrive.
I see that the Woods family [Woody and Francis] have moved into Dave Macks old house at 703
Sandpiper. The Woods have lived in the area for over 25 years, so are no strangers to the area. Give
them a good old Knolls Estates welcome.
The Winery of the month contest will feature the Hillcrest Winery for this month. Please refer to the
“Bulletin Page” on the web sight for the winning family this month. I am attaching a c.c. of the mail I
received from Glenda Martin, who was the winner in July. She went to the Becker winery and sent a
picture of she and the owner. She stated that she tasted some wine and ended up buying a couple of
bottles This is therefore a win win for the wineries and they love it.
A neighbor told me that this area has a huge epidemic of tree destroying caterpillars this year These
critters are nesting in the trees in webs and come out at night and early morning to eat the leaves off of
the trees. More information can be found by googling “web or tent Caterpillars I will attach a picture of
what the neighbor brought me, as well as a web site that you can look at.. He said the only way to
eradicate them was to burn them or stomp on them. First, however they must be cut out of the tree, by
cutting the limb that the web is on.
Another last minute request was received this afternoon from Patricia Klassen and I told her I would
solicit responses from concerned homeowners. This has to do with the speed limit on highway 138 of
55 miles/hour. There are a lot of logging trucks and other vehicles that exceed this limit and if you have
ever tried to exit on Dovetail to 138 you know what I mean. Patricia and the Sutherlin Chief of Police are
going to Salem this next Thursday to appeal to the Dept. of Highways to reduce the speed limit from
Church St. at #138 up to the Highway 5. Their contention is that, even though it is a state highway, it
runs through a residential area and is very dangerous. If anyone would like to accompany them to
Salem to testify please contact Patricia. If you feel strongly that something should be done, arm Patricia
with some Emails that give your viewpoint or experience. Her mail address is pklassen@charter.net
That will do it for this month and if anyone has any suggestions, ideas or advice please contact me.
REMEMBER TO MARK YOUR CALENDER FOR THE GENERAL MEETING ON OCTOBER 22ND.WE NEED
YOUR ATTENDANCE.
