UNK INTRAMURAL SPORTS
COURT VOLLEYBALL
1. A team shall consist of at least 6 players; three front court and three backcourt. In
corec play, serving order and positions on the floor must be an alternation of male and
female. Each team must supply their own volleyball and both teams need to agree on
the game ball.
2. The official will determine first set service.
3. A team must start and finish with no less than four players. In corec play, there must
be an equal number of males and females. If team plays with less than six, a side out
will occur at the designated spot(s). (If agreed upon before match is played, 3 women
and 2 men are acceptable.)
4. There is no maximum number of players that can be on a team roster; with the
understanding that the Champion of each tournament bracket will only receive up to 9
Champion T-shirts. To receive all 9 T-shirts a team must have at least 9 players on
their roster.
5. A game/set will consist of 15 minutes (running time) or 25 points rally score in the
first and second game, and 15 points rally score in the third game; whichever comes
first. The first team to win 2 out of 3 sets wins the match. No time limit during
championship match. During regular season: A team must win by two points, even if
time is up or first to score 30 points in the first and second set. There is no point cap
in the 3rd set.

7. Each team will be allowed one thirty (30) second time-out per set. One minute
between games (no time out can be taken the last 2 minutes of each set).
8. The officials will be the scorekeepers and timers. Their decisions are final.
9. The Intramural Sport supervisor and officials will not tolerate abusive language or
actions from coaches, participants or spectators. If such disruptive and
unsportsmanlike behavior persists, individuals and/or teams may be asked to leave the
playing area.
10. Anyone who is ejected from a set for any reason will be suspended from the next two
games.
11. Games will be played Monday through Thursday from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
12. There will be two divisions of men, women, and corec during tournament time.
Regular season records will decide these divisions.
A DIVISION will have records of 6-0; 5-1; 4-2.
B DIVISION will have records of 3-3; 2-4; 1-5; 0-6.
13. A team not ready to play at the scheduled time will forfeit the first set. In ten
additional minutes they shall forfeit the match.
14. Only players in the front row may block or spike from the front row. A team may not
have more than three front row players; however, a back row player may play the ball
in the frontcourt as long as their feet remain on the ground.
15. Back row players do not have the right to participate in a block. Back row players
may spike the ball, if they take off behind the 10-foot line.
16. Legal contact is a touch of the ball by a player’s body above and including the waist
which does not allow the ball to visibly come to rest or involve prolonged contact
with a player’s body. (Ex: if the ball bounces off the open palm of a players hand but
does not come to rest it is considered a legal contact. If the ball visibly comes to rest
on the players open palm it is considered a carry/lift.)
17. A player may not contact the ball twice in succession; however, any player
participating in a block with a teammate has the right to make the next contact. Such
contact will count as the first of three contacts allowed the team.
18. A team may not contact the ball more than 3 times in attempting to send it over the
net. In the case of a block, three hits are allowed after the block itself. In corec play,
when the ball is played more than once by a team, one of these contacts must be by a
female.
19. A player may step on the centerline but not completely over the centerline.
20. A player is not allowed to spike the ball when it is on opponent’s side of the net.
21. A ball may contact several parts of the body at the same time, but if it does not do so
simultaneously, this constitutes the fault or double hit. The ball may be contacted
with any part of the body.
22. A rotation method of serving will be utilized with new players entering at the center
back position.
23. Service:
a. If a server throws the ball in the air, but does not hit it and if it touches some part of the server’s
body as it falls, this counts as a fault.
b. Service cannot be made with two hands.
c. Service is a fault if it is not made following the rotation order.
d. Service must be made within 5 seconds of the referee blowing the whistle.
e. On serve, the receiving team can bump or set the serve.
24. It is illegal to attack or break the boundary of the net on service.
25. During volleys, you may play the ball off ceiling obstructions on your side of the
court. If it hits ceiling obstructions on your opponent’s side of the court, the
surrounding courts or enters on adjoining courts, it is a dead ball.
26. Corec and men will have net height of 7’11 5/8” at 43 on the volleyball standard and
women’s net height of 7’ 4 1/8” will be placed at 30 on the volleyball standard.
