Research Guide

Egg Carton Rattlesnake: egg carton, rice, small plastic cups with lids to hold rice, wiggle eyes,

felt diamonds, red pipe cleaner and Tacky Glue

Nonfiction book: Rattlesnake by Doug Weschler

Fiction book: Baby Rattlesnake Adapted by Lynn Moroney

Estimated time for completing projects: 2 - 45-minute lab periods and 1 - 45-minute

library period



Description of project:

1st Session:

Students work in pairs to view and hear Desert Animal Research PowerPoint. Using a

research guide, students take notes on a desert animal. One partner completes top portion

of the guide, while 2nd partner completes lower portion. Students share what they learned

with each other and a teacher.

Vocabulary introduced: nocturnal, diurnal, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, adaptation

Desert Animals studied: roadrunner, fringed-toed lizard, desert tortoise, scorpion,

jackrabbit, sidewinder, tarantula, kit fox



2nd session:

Students returned to the computer lab to create a Kid Pix illustration detailing facts and

information recorded on the research guide. The slide is combined with partner’s slide

and added to whole class presentation. Kid Pix images are inserted into PowerPoint.

Students add details and record voices.



3rd Session:

Librarian introduces topic with a rattlesnake puppet and hidden rattle. Review vocabulary

and introduce instinct. Students predict what instinct means. Librarian shares nonfiction

and fiction books about rattlesnakes. Students then confirm or reject their prediction on

what instinct means. Students then create an egg carton rattlesnake.
