Organizational Behavior 6301-503 Fall, 2002 Syllabus Instructor: Office: Office Hours: Class Hours: Phone: Electronic mail: Website: Dr. Orlando Richard Jonsson 5.424 By Appointment Thursday, 7:00-9:45PM in HT 1.302 972-883-4073 (Office) pretty@utdallas.edu and orgbevocr@aol.com http://www.utdallas.edu/~pretty/ Required Textbook Robbins, Essentials in Organizational Behavior, 7th ed. Bowen, Experiences in Management and Organizational Behavior, 4th ed. Ritti, The Ropes to Skip and The Ropes to Know, 5th ed. Course Objectives This course will provide a broad overview of the organization behavior (OB) field. The goals of this class are threefold: to understand the various content areas (e.g., attitudes, personality, leadership) in the OB field, to advance oral competencies through professional presentations and intra-class discussion/debate, and to strengthen written competencies by offering feedback and revision opportunities on written assignments (e.g., 7-page paper). While understanding OB content is important for a class of this nature, the improvement of oral and written competencies can be employed in a variety of arenas. Time management represents a secondary objective. Fold length-wise. Visibly write the name you would like to be called on the name tent. Course Policies 1. Please try to arrive on time for class. If you think that you will be tardy frequently, consider withdrawing from this section of OB 6301. 2. EXAMS will include lecture literature and textbook materials as well as definitions from interactive presentations. Makeup exams will be given only for legitimate absences as defined in the student handbook. Please bring adequate documentation. Makeup exams must be scheduled within one week of the original date. Please notify me in advance if you will miss an exam. 3. PARTICIPATION: All students must be prepared to discuss EXPERIENCES CASES/ROPES TO SKIP and/or EXPERIMENTIAL EXERCISES on a daily basis. Non-facilitators should prepare a ½ page review and conceptual analysis for all experiences cases in the Experiences in Management and Organizational Behavior, and a ½ page theoretical analysis for each of the Rope to Skip and the Ropes to Know readings (there are eight ropes for a total of 4 pages). Please bold or italicize all OB related terms in concepts in which you apply to cases. Experimential exercises usually do not require a written assignment but you should be prepared for the in-class discussion and debate. 4. QUIZZES: Several times over the course of the semester there will be a short quiz. These quizzes will brief and related to the assigned class readings from the Essentials of Organizational Behavior. Quizzes will be short in nature (about 5 minutes), including several questions testing your reading of class materials. The format consists of either fill-in-the blank, true or false, or short answer. 5. FACILITATION: Facilitators should prepare a 2-page review and analysis for all cases and a 1-page comment sheet for each Ropes reading. Facilitators should also bring (present for about 5-minutes) a 1-page article summary of an applied classic or current article (company specific or general) related to the topic to share with the audience. 6. INTERACTIVE PROJECT: The project will consist of two components: oral and written. The oral component, depending on your topic, can range from 30 to 35 minutes and is intended to be informative but interactive. Informativeness requires substantive content and full coverage of the topic (what should the class know?) and literature should be delivered professionally (e.g., power-point, transparencies, note cards, business attire). I strongly encourage rehearsal of your presentation. Interactiveness may be inclusive of a video application, a group exercise, a role-play, etc. Straight lecture is discouraged. The written component should follow a format similar to articles published in refereed journals (see the appended Sample Diversity Outline for 7-page paper). The goal necessitates comprehensiveness. In other words, you should take your topic as the umbrella and tie it to other organizational behavior concepts. 7. Students needing testing accommodations or classroom accommodations based on disability are encouraged to discuss the need with me as soon as possible.
