Unit Description /        This learning unit is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to

Recognition of Prior      Students who already possess the competencies developed in this module are eligible
Learning (RPL)            for RPL or credit upon substantiation of their competency in the relevant elements/

Employability Skills      In addition to the knowledge and technical skills specific to the competencies listed
                          above, in this unit emphasis will be placed on the following Employability Skills:

                             Planning and Organizing

Time Structure            2 hours per week on desktop publishing over 17 weeks:
                          Total nominal hours = 50 Total actual hours 36 hours
                          Students are expected to do follow up work out of class to consolidate the skills taught
                          in class and enable satisfactory completion of competency.
Delivery Strategy         This unit/subject will be delivered in a classroom and will comprise teacher led
                          instruction and group discussion, classroom activities, role plays, case studies, team
                          activities, on site visits, research, and presentations. Delivery via WebCT may be
                          incorporated into the delivery of this subject.

Student Handbook          It is the responsibility of students to refer to the Student Handbook for policy and
                          information on assessments, resits, absence from assessment classes, attendance,
                          application for special consideration, student conduct, mobile phone use in class,
                          plagiarism and other matters.

Assessment Strategy:    Evidence folder (Desktop published tasks eg flyer, Business card)
                        Observation checklist (see Performance Criteria listed below)
                        To pass a competency, students must be competent in ALL assessment items
                        for that competency.

                        Details of assessments, including dates of assessments, are contained in the attached
                        schedule of classes. Further details of the assessments will be provided in class.

                        If students fail an assessment on the first attempt, a resit / resubmission will be
                        available.

                        Failure to attend an assessment class will result in a zero mark for that assessment
                        and no resit is available—unless an Application for Special Consideration is lodged by
                        the student within the required time (3 working days of the scheduled assessment or
                        due date of the assessment) and approved by the teacher.

                        Submission of assessments will not be accepted after the expiry of the due date unless
                        an application for special consideration has been approved.

                        Students are STRONGLY advised to attend ALL scheduled classes in order to benefit
                        from class discussions and activities and to have access to resources and teacher
                        support. Failure to attend classes may seriously jeopardise a successful outcome in
                        this module.

Communication           Students must access their email on a regular basis to receive emails relevant to their

                        receiving important updates and students will be responsible for any consequences
                        arising out of failure to regularly access their email.

                        Students must not use their personal email address in the course of
                        University communication and must use their university student email.

                        Students must also access Docushare for course information including timetables,
                        outlines, assessments and course resources.

                        Results are released to students online on My VU. My VU also provides students with
                        details of their enrolment particulars and again any enrolment queries.

                        If a student does not have reliable access to a computer and the internet, you will need
                        to access the services provided to students at each campus either in the library or the
                        open access computer facility.
