Transfer Guide 2008 – 2009 Transfer Guide 2008 Transfer Guide 2008 – 2009 Goal-driven. Purposeful. Students who transfer to UT Dallas are people with plans. And UT Dallas has a long understanding of and respect for transfer students and their goals. We were founded as a research institute, expanded to a university that admitted only upper division students, and later began admitting freshmen in 1990. That’s why we understand you ... we’ve known you longer. Transfers were our very first students. Today, our student body is 50 percent transfers who are consistently ranked among our most successful students – soccer champions, White House interns, business majors with global ambitions. UT Dallas transfer students also have one of the highest graduation rates among Texas public universities. Our statistics are impressive because of the quality of our students. They arrive at UT Dallas with college experience and strong determination to reach their goals. We’re here to help. UT Dallas offers opportunity to take part in pioneering research and outstanding academic programs, learning from a world-class faculty. Your record of practical, hardworking achievement means you deserve no less. UT Dallas graduates reach (and often exceed) their goals because we customize and personalize the learning process for each one of them through a variety of resources – one-on-one mentoring in the classroom, extensive academic advising and a host of other support services and opportunities: campus clubs and activities, online study groups, fast-track graduate programs, co-op and internship programs and job placement counseling at our Career Center. Read about a few of our students in this brochure, and learn more about how we can personalize the process to help you reach your goals. It’s the perfect environment to get a quality education while having fun in other activities. Students here are competitive on a number of levels. For some it’s strictly academics – grades are everything – and I respect that. For me it is a combination of academics and athletics. I enjoy them both. On one hand, I’m getting the kind of education that’s preparing me to do well as a teacher. On the other, I’m having fun cheering at volleyball or basketball games. For me, a fulfilling college life involves experiencing as much as one can in the short time he or she is there. I like the fact that we have music on campus, an active student center and athletic events to attend. I like the way students seem to bond; the way professors show an interest in the individual. All that fits nicely into what I think an educational experience should be. Still, the most important thing is the education. When I told friends that I was transferring to UT Dallas, the reaction was that I would be at a school with a reputation for very high academic standards. And I liked that. I like for people to be impressed that I attend UT Dallas.” Ashley Carter is an interdisciplinary studies major and former all-conference soccer forward who transferred from McNeese State University. She plans to teach kindergarten. My wife convinced me to enroll in a community college and then I began looking for a university that might allow me the opportunity to work toward a degree. I was working as a computer network administrator when I decided to transfer to UT Dallas and get serious about a degree plan. I was still thinking of a career in computers at the time, but after I enrolled, I realized what an excellent reputation UT Dallas had in other fields of study – like political science, government and politics. Being something of a political junkie, I found myself quickly gravitating in that direction. I’d never heard of the Archer Fellow Program (UT System in D.C. internship and education program) until one of my professors at UT Dallas urged me to apply, saying it would look good on my resume when I began trying to get into law school. At his suggestion, I went through the application process and was pleasantly surprised when I was selected. My time spent in the White House was amazing. Having a ringside seat from which to watch how our government runs the most powerful country in the world was a remarkable experience. I worked on compiling documents that were sent to the vice president and cabinet for their review and then I would compile their responses. I look back on my life and it’s already been a pretty interesting journey. But then, thanks in great part to my time at UT Dallas, it’s also one that’s really just beginning.” Kenneth Leatherman, a government and politics major, dropped out of high school at age 15 to support his disabled parents. After getting his diploma and serving in the Marines, he went to Brookhaven College and then transferred to UT Dallas. He currently attends Southern Methodist University Law School and hopes to become a prosecuting attorney. Transfer students may apply any time prior to the dates listed below. I was selling cookies when I was rejected by a customer who was on a diet. After mentioning we had a low-fat cookie they were sold and I knew marketing was meant for me. I did a lot of research and found that UT Dallas offers a great program in business administration with a concentration in marketing. So when I decided to come here, I immediately signed up for Comet Connection. It was a new program at the time, and I was one of the first to enroll. As a result, I got to know my advisor before I was even a student. It’s been a great advantage, and I’ve been able to save money by attending Collin College. Each semester, I based my class schedule at Collin on the requirements for my major – I think it’s important to look ahead to where you want to be and plan your classes accordingly. As a transfer, I’ve had the chance to meet other community college students like me. Once I started taking classes designed for my degree, I met people from a variety of backgrounds that also planned on attending UT Dallas. I’ve moved a lot in the past – everywhere from Canada to Brazil and California to Texas – and my lifestyle has given me plenty of practice for starting at a new school. Moving around has also given me a desire to travel, so I was even more excited when I found out that UT Dallas offers a study abroad program. I’m looking forward to the coming years here; I hope to continue my education and travel at the same time, putting both my goals and passions together rather than choosing one over the other.” Sheridan Peixoto transferred from Collin College with a 4.0 grade point average. After graduation, she hopes to use her degree to work at a corporation based in Dallas. Sheridan is proud that her experience with Comet Connection inspired her brother to sign up for the program too. What is the Comet Connection?
