Pulitzer Prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the 13th Annual
Bank of America Oldtime Baseball Game, to be played Thursday, August 24 at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Field on Sherman
Street in North Cambridge.
As always, the game will feature top college and high school players from Greater Boston. But the game also
includes a surprise or two: This year, Jed Hoyer, the assistant general manager of the Boston Red Sox and a former
baseball star at Wesleyan University, will make his Oldtime Baseball Game debut.
In keeping with a tradition of having current or former professional athletes from Boston participate, Tom Fitzgerald
of the Boston Bruins will play in his first Oldtime Baseball Game. Also playing in the game will be 2006 Wesleyan
University graduate Jeffrey Maier, perhaps best known for an incident in the 1996 American League Championship
Series, when, as a 12-year-old, he turned a fly ball by the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter into a home run when he
reached out of the bleachers and deflected the ball. This year, Maier became the all-time career hits leader at
Wesleyan.
Managing in the Oldtime Baseball Game will be two World Series participants from the 1940s: Red Sox legend
Johnny Pesky, who played in the 1946 Series, and Boston native Lennie Merullo, who played for the Chicago Cubs in
the 1945 World Series.
This year’s game is being played as a benefit for the C-2 Mission, which was created to benefit children and
families affected by cerebral palsy and cystic fibrosis. The C-2 Mission will earmark funds from the Oldtime Baseball
Game to its Pick Me Up Program, which provides financial assistance for families in need affected by these diseases.
Doris Kearns Goodwin is a lifelong baseball fan, beginning with her childhood passion for the old Brooklyn
Dodgers. She later settled in Massachusetts and adopted the Boston Red Sox as her team of choice. Goodwin is the
author of the current best-selling “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.” Her passion for baseball
can be found in another of her books, “Wait Till Next Year,” her memoir of growing up as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. She
is also known to millions of fans of the national pastime through her work as a featured participant in Ken Burns’ epic
documentary “Baseball.”
What makes the Oldtime Baseball Game so special is its glittering array of oldtime uniforms, used just once a year
for the game. The old-style flannel uniforms represent just about every era in baseball history, from the 1901
Baltimore Orioles to the 1969 Seattle Pilots. Such long-ago teams as the Boston Braves, St. Louis Browns and Doris
Kearns Goodwin’s beloved Brooklyn Dodgers are represented.
The old Negro Leagues are also included, with uniforms from the Homestead Grays, Kansas City Monarchs and
Baltimore Elite Giants. Such long ago minor-league teams as the San Francisco Seals, Oakland Oaks and Roswell
Rockets are represented. Last year, two new uniforms were added: The colorful and legendary Cienfuegos
Elephantes of Cuba, and the Alaska Goldpanners of the famed Alaska Summer League.
The Oldtime Baseball Game even features the uniform of a team that never actually existed: The York Knights, for
whom Robert Redford’s Roy Hobbs character played in “The Natural.”
Fittingly, Jeffrey Maier will wear a 1950s-style New York Yankees uniform in this year’s Oldtime Baseball Game.
Admission to the Oldtime Baseball Game is free. Fans are asked to bring a beach blanket or chair and camp out
along the foul lines, as it is the crowd that makes the evening so electric.
The rain date for the Oldtime Baseball game is the next night, Friday, August 25, also at 7 p.m.
