EUROCONTROL PETAL II
PETAL II in operational environment at
Maastricht Upper Air Control Centre
• With line ATC controllers
• Revenue and non-revenue flights of American Airlines 767-
300ERs
• Also conducted test flights with Qinetiq BAC1-11 in a test
sector configuration
• Flight operations completed September 01
PETAL II was a Success
• Demonstrated viability/suitability of CPDLC over
VDLM2/ATN
• Worked out many technical and ops issues for CPDLC over
VDLM2/ATN in a trials environment
• Basis for US-based CPDLC program and Link 2000+

CPDLC Build 1 partners, in a consensus
decision, replanned CPDLC Build 1
• Technical validation and operational evaluation conducted
• Operational service begins Sep 02 and lasts until Build 1A

ARINC has installed the US ATN/VDLM2
ground network
• 4 stations in FL operational (MCO, RSW, GNV, MIA)
• Provides partial coverage of the Miami ARTCC airspace to
support testing pre-operational testing
• 5 additional stations (9 total) to be operational by Sep 02
FAA flight tests with Rockwell Collins
• In the Miami ARTCC
