Internship with Babylon Idiomas in Seville, Spain

Internship Details

Open to students from the University of Alberta who wish to increase their Spanish language

skills while living, studying and working in an intensive Spanish language environment in Spain.



Interns will have the opportunity to work in a variety of NGO’s in areas listed below. Interns

must take a language skills test before placement to ensure their abilities are adequate for the

work environment. Intensive classes are available before internships begin for students who

wish to increase their language skills (extra fees apply). Please note, interns are given 10

hours of language training per week during their internship, whether they take the intensive

pre-internship classes or not.





Areas:

Education & Employment, Solidarity and Awareness, Publicity, Marketing, and Graphic Design.

These programs will appeal primarily to students in fields such as Education, Arts, Phys Ed &

Recreation, Law, Agriculture and Business.



Location:

Babylon Idiomas has 4 locations throughout Spain. However, our program will take place in

Seville.



Tasks:

 Varies according to partner organization and job description.

 Please see detailed information sheets for more information on participating NGOs.

Qualities required:

 Minimum 2.7 GPA in your last term; a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

 Have completed at minimum 6 credits of 200 level Spanish by the time of departure; or 200

level proficiency. For students familiar with European Union language standards, Babylon

Idiomas suggests being at level B1 or B2, which is intermediate to high intermediate.

 Previous travel experience an advantage, but not a requirement.



Dates of the internship:

 Flexible: May, September or January start dates

 Babylon Idiomas has assured us that programs will fit into our semester system, enabling

students to return to Edmonton to continue their studies at the UofA.



Duration:

 Internships are approximately 12 weeks long. If a student does not have an acceptable

level of Spanish prior to departure, he or she can participate in either a 2 or 4 week

Wage: None



Funding:

Limited funding is available. 2 travel awards worth $1000 are available to students in the 2008-

2009 academic year.



Costs and Accommodation:

Two housing options are available: homestay or student residence.



Homestays cost approximately €2876 and include 2 meals per day, linens, telephone, utilities

and house keys.



Student apartments cost approximately €2075, including utilities, kitchenware and

washer/dryer. Meals are not included in the student apartment option.



Both options include tuition and course fees for 12 weeks, orientation and on-site meetings, 10

hours of language training per week (this is in addition to the intensive course option you may

opt to complete before the internship start date), as well as internet, library and weekly cultural

activities.



Pre-internship language class information follows:



2 week intensive pre-internship language training - student apartment: €519

2 week intensive pre-internship language training - homestay: €639



4 week intensive pre-internship language training - student apartment: €943

4 week intensive pre-internship language training - homestay: €1183

Registration Details at U of A for Internship

We likely won’t require that you remain registered at the UofA while on this program. However,

if you would prefer to be registered at the UofA during your time in Spain for student loan,

scholarship or awards purposes, we may be able to register you in ABROD 800. This will not

generate any tuition. However, it will generate transcript and registration fees for that term,

which are estimated to be about $75 or so. Course registration details will be discussed with

the Work Abroad Advisor after nomination to the program.

Additional services:

A mandatory pre-departure session is held for all participants in a Study or Work Abroad

Program. Additional support is provided by Babylon Idiomas.

1- View the Work Abroad Information Session available on-line

2- Read the Work Abroad Terms of Student Participation (available online and in the

EARL).

3- Research information about your program

i. Check the Babylon Idiomas program box in the work abroad and study

abroad sections of the EARL,

ii. read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) booklet, and the Returned

Student Reports (when available)

4- Submit a Work Abroad Application form

Please submit all supporting documents listed in the Work Abroad Application Form &

the FAQ booklet to the Education Abroad office by the application deadline.

5- Interview

A short list of candidates will be posted on our website in the Work Abroad section

under ‘Step 4: Interviews.’ It is the applicant’s responsibility to view this information and

follow any instructions provided.

6- Selection Results:

Nomination results will be posted on our website.
