This yearbook, produced by the Advertising Association, features UK focused data,
detailing advertising expenditure from 1965 to 2007 laid out in tables. Information is
listed relating to advert type, product, expenditure, etc. as well as extra data pertaining
to GDP, household expenditure, etc.

The STATS: An Overview of the Film, Television, Video and DVD Industries in the UK

A British Film Institute (BFI) produced year by year statistical breakdown of data
pertaining to country, distributor, profit, investment etc of media between 1990 and
2001. This resource, which will be of relevance as a historical statistical source, features
data but with no accompanying commentary.

ranges from as far back as 1933 but most is more recent. Currently data is only available

comprehensive data source pertaining to the food and agriculture industries and
covering 200 countries. Users are able to select specific data relevant to sector or

World Commodity Profiles: Food, Feedstuffs and Beverages 2007

includes statistical tables too. Covering major foodstuffs and their seasonality, export

Major industries and manufacturing
CBI Industrial Trends Survey
(P) AL 73 –E(1) Business (BIPC holds latest 4 years)
Respected survey of a sample of several hundred UK manufacturing firms in 50
industries, giving detailed information about business optimism, export and domestic
orders, outputs, costs, prices, numbers employed and spend on innovation and training.
It is published towards the end of January, April, July and October, with monthly
updates in between which give the results of five key questions. Results are split into
tables by size of organisation (1-199 employees, 200-499, 500-4999 and 5,000+). There

are separate but less detailed results for Scotland and Wales. The survey has been
running since 1958, so it’s a great source of time-series data. The same sample of
manufacturing firms is used each month and the same level of industry details is
prepared, which also aids comparison. You’ll find the surveys and updates for the last
four years in the Business & IP Centre in London. Earlier issues or loan copies have to be
ordered using the integrated catalogue.

The Annual Business Index records numbers of VAT-registered firms in each SIC
classification, their total turnover and numbers employed. With these tables, you can see
how the numbers of firms in each SIC class (and other data) have changed over time
(data goes back to 1995 in some cases). Takes account of different versions of the SIC
classification (1992, 2003 and now 2007). Includes links to the current SIC tables and a
comparison between the old and new schedules.
UK Timber Statistics 2006

Concise booklet produced by the Forestry Commission including statistics from the
timber industry in the UK between 1996 and 2005. Data covers timbering, delivery and
production. The resource is user friendly and is presented simply in tables and graphs
with some accompanying notes.
Shipping Statistics Yearbook 2006

From the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics, this yearbook contains data
pertaining to every sector of shipping, with a detailed breakdown according to country,
ship type, sea traffic, etc. A comprehensive introductory commentary and analysis is
followed by substantial data displayed in table and graph format.

Contains comprehensive data on research and development spending, product and drug
development and regulation of the sector between1980 and 2003. US focused but also
includes international data. Much of the statistical information is accompanied by

databases featuring data from the World Health Organisation and coverage is

SPIS National Statistics Collection

A series of data and reports published in the last five years from the UK Office for
National Statistics in print format and covering a broad range of subject areas. Useful as
a browsable resource. Examples include the Labour Market Bulletin (an annual collection
of articles analysing trends on labour market topics) and Monthly Digest of Statistics
