SYLLABUS - SPANISH 121
5:30-7:40pm (Monday/Wednesday night class)
FALL 2010
Panorama (3rd edition)
Adjunct Professor (Assoc): Laura Deaton Tel: 566-8048 (emergencies only)
Email: LDeaton@pierce.ctc.edu
*You are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct as stated in the Student Handbook.
Everyone in this class will be treated as a college student regardless of age or student’s status.
As a courtesy to others, turn your cell phones completely off or risk having
points deducted from tests.
Since this is an interactive class, please try to minimize eating during class time.
Be punctual. After 10 minutes, you will have to wait for a break to come in class.
We are all responsible for creating a safe, physical and emotional learning environment.
NOTE: Any student who feels he or she may need an accommodation for any type of disability,
please contact the Access and Disability Services office, and talk to me asap.
WORKLOAD FOR THIS CLASS: at least 2-3 HOURS EVERYDAY
(Mayorga/Deaton)
1. Study from class notes and the textbook “Panorama”. Memorize vocabulary everyday.
2. Complete all of the assignments online everyday. The program will correct them for you,
except for short paragraphs.
3. Before coming to class, you are responsible for studying the grammar explanations in the
textbook (libro).
4. Practice listening, speaking, reading and writing everyday. Do not expect to learn Spanish just
by coming to class. The Panorama program is very complete and interactive; therefore,
we expect you to learn from all its components.
Do not be discouraged! Learning another language takes time, determination, and perseverance.
2
MINIMUM EXPECTATIONS FOR THIS CLASS- Mayorga/Deaton
1. COME TO CLASS PREPARED. You are responsible for studying the grammar
explanations in the textbook.
2 TRY TO SPEAK IN SPANISH AT ALL TIMES. Use the vocabulary you know to ask
questions.
3 BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS. E.g.: Listen when others are speaking.
4. BE ON TASK. When you are working in pairs or groups, you are supposed to contribute by
speaking in Spanish and being on task. If someone in your group decides to waste his/her time,
ask that person politely to get on task; I may ask him/her to leave the class.
Learning a language is a slow, interactive process. These are some
recommendations on how to study Spanish:
PRACTICE the four basic skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) EVERY DAY
for at least two hours.
Do not translate English into Spanish. English (Germanic language) and Spanish
(Romance language) may have different grammatical constructions. For instance, to
express “my friends’ house”, we say “la casa de mis amigos” (the house of my friends).
Try to speak in Spanish in class at all times. Participate! Don’t wait to be called on.
Don’t panic because you don’t know a particular word. Listen to what you do
understand, and guess at the unknown. You may ask: “repita, por favor” (repeat,
please).
Study from class notes and the textbook before doing any assignments.
Work in groups outside of class when possible. Speak in Spanish with your classmates
outside of class.
Work with a Tutor (available at no cost to you at the Tutoring Center).
Listen to Spanish radio (1360 AM) and T.V. programs.
Memorize vocabulary every day. Make flash cards with drawings on one side, and
Spanish on the other. Write whole sentences that are meaningful to you.
Keep a positive attitude at all times, and be patient with yourself and others.
3

CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING YOUR FINAL GRADE (nota final)
ASSIGNMENTS are done online. In order to pass this class you must do
the on-line assigned exercises to the best of your ability. If 80%-100% of all Web-Sam
work is not completed, you will have your final grade reduced 10 percentage points. You
do not need to e-mail Web-sam work to me, simply click on the Instructor Review button
on-line, if you would like me to check it. Once you click “submit”, your answers will be
recorded on-line. You have up to 6 tries on most exercises, except for the practice tests.
With the Third edition of Panorama, you will find them on the Supersite, under Maestro
Web-SAM (found at the top of the web page once you have registered).
For instructions go to:
http://panorama.vhlcentral.com/instructions.php?cid=49422&sid=60970
It is up to you to learn (aprender) in this class. In order to learn another language, we
must practice the four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) daily.
ATTENDANCE & PARTICIPATION is crucial in this course. If you
miss a class, you are still responsible for the material covered that day. If you earn a
“Fail” in the attendance and participation part of the course, your final grade will be
reduced 10%.
PASS:
I attended class, and arrived on time and totally prepared.
I greeted people and took leave using Spanish expressions.
I worked on my comprehension skills by listening when others spoke.
I spoke Spanish whenever possible.
I participated in all activities with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
I helped others do all of the above.
FAIL:
I used more English in class than Spanish.
I was not listening while others talked.
My presence in a group did not make much difference in getting the task done.
I missed 4 or more entire classes.
I came in late more than 4 times (more than 15 minutes late).
I used my cell phone to text during class after the 1st warning.
5
15 % of the grade: DIALOGUES In pairs you will do two 2 minute dialogues in Spanish
in front of the class. In Spanish they are called “dialógos”.
Dates: October 4 and December 6. If you fail to attend those days, your grade for this portion of
your grade will be a “0”. Exceptions will only be made at the discretion of the instructor.
Grading criteria: pass/fail.
*You may use a 3” X 5” card to give you cues. Keep them simple and practice a lot. You
can only look at your card once or twice to pass.
25% COMPOSITIONS ( composiciones) written in Spanish. The goal is
to help you improve your skills; therefore, start writing ahead of time so that you can
learn (aprender) from the process. No one can help you with the paper and usage of an
on-line translation service is considered cheating. The paper needs to be your own work.
Papers will be accepted no later than 1 class period late(with a major point
deduction). No credit for ones turned in any later. (To be considered “on-time”,
paper must be turned in within first 10 minutes of class on due date.)
Papers are worth 50 points. You are allowed to “drop” one.
Dates due: 10/11, 10/27, 11/10, and 11/29.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. They must be typed, and double-spaced. Font size: 12. Length: ¾ of a page.
* You may write accent marks by hand, if you cannot type them.
2. They must have been written entirely by you; i.e., nobody can help you write them.
3. You should use the vocabulary and grammar structures studied in class.
6
TOPICS & FORMATS:
1st. Write one dialogue between two friends, and a 2nd dialogue between a two strangers. In a separate paragraph, tell me
who is in your family with the 2nd chapter vocab. Length? One page long total. (The other papers due are shorter.)
2nd. Write about your daily activities at the university. What classes are you taking? Use AR/ER/IR verbs. Essay format.
3rd. Write about your family or someone else’s family. Again, use AR/ER/IR verbs. Essay format.
4th. Write a letter in which you talk about 1)your pastimes/fav.sports, and 2)your friends’ pastimes/sports; also write
about what you like to do on vacation with “me gusta”. Finally, include at least 4 stem-changers from chapter 4.
EVALUATION CRITERIA –no on-line translation service can be used
1. Content (Information Conveyed). Very complete information, thorough, relevant, and on target.
2. Organization. Logically and effectively ordered. Main points and details are connected; fluency.
3. Vocabulary. Effective word use and choice, and extensive use of vocabulary studies.
4. Language. No errors in the grammar presented in lesson, very few errors in subject/verb or
