CLEAR LIQUID DIET INSTRUCTIONS:
TO BE USED ONLY IF CHILD PRESENTS WITH VOMITING AND/OR DIARRHEA
Clear liquid diet means clear liquids only. Do not give your child milk, meats, vegetables, fruit, potato
chips or Fritos.
Depending on your child’s age, give only the following, except: No orange, apple or grape juice.
Birth to 6 Months of Age:
Electrolyte replacement such as Pedialyte or Gerber LiquiLytes for 6 hours
After 6 hours on electrolyte replacement, children under 12 months of age can then be given l/2 strength
soy formula for 12 hours, then full strength soy and regular diet for 5 days. Resume regular formula
schedule with regular diet thereafter. Breastfeeding mothers may continue to breastfeed as per health
provider instructions.
6 Months to 12 Months of Age:
May resume regular formula and regular diet after 12 hours.
12 Months to 2 Years of Age:
Electrolyte replacement such as Pedialyte or Gerber LiquiLytes for 6 hours. After 6 hours,
resume regular diet for age.
2 Years of Age and Older:
Gatorade All-Sport or Gatorade Powerade may be added to above-mentioned clear liquids
After 6-12 hours on clear liquids, if patient is improved, you may start regular diet, including cooked
vegetables (no corn), pasta, and mashed potatoes. NO BUTTER OR MILK. Margarine is acceptable,
and lean meats such as chicken, fish, and turkey. No salami, bologna, hot dogs, sausage, or bacon.

Please avoid red or orange liquid dyes in situations of vomiting and/or diarrhea, as they may falsely
appear to be blood.
Feed through vomiting, giving 1 ounce every 15-20 minutes for 2-3 hours. If, at the end of the 2-3 hour
period, patient keeps down more than he/she throws up, continue to the next phase. Increase the diet to
solids. If patient vomits more than he/she keeps down, CALL YOUR HEALTH PROVIDER AS SOON
AS POSSIBLE.
